There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Whether you want to hike among alpine flowers or charge down the freshly powdered slopes, you'll be more than happy here. It's tucked up on the top floor of a building that couldn't look more quintessentially Swiss if it tried, and blends a slightly retro character with quite a few luxuries. You'll find separate balconies facing north and south, and a modern log burner, along with a private lift to your apartment. The wood-clad interiors will fulfil your log cabin fantasies, and it's just an eight-minute walk to the cable car. This car-free Swiss village has everything you could possibly want for your stay; slopes for skiing and hiking, mountain bike trails to explore, and opportunities to brave paragliding – and there are shops, a restaurant, and a bar nearby.

If you're visiting in summer, a spacious garden and terrace furniture is perfect for catching the sunset, and if you need a break from all that cheese, you can fire up the barbecue.

Set in the heart of Switzerland’s Sherlock country, this apartment is just a kilometre from the Meiringen-Hasilberg ski area, surrounded by stunning Alpine scenery. Known for its connection to the fictional detective, the region is home to the Reichenbach Falls – where he faked a fatal fall alongside his nemesis. Away from its literary links, there are hiking trails and paths right outside the door, and in summer you can choose between horse riding, mountain biking, paragliding, and lake swimming to keep you busy. With its Burgundy-coloured shutters, wooden exterior, ornate balcony, and surrounded by towering pine trees – velvety green in summer and dusted with snow in winter – this home is a delight to look at from the outside. And the inside isn’t half bad either – warm wood dominates the decor and creates that cosy, cabin feel. But there are flashes of personality here too, with vintage ski posters, deer-print cushions and glittering chandelier lights in the master bedroom. The real draw is the views – thanks to the home's elevated position you’ll be rewarded with a sensational picture of the Alps from both the sunny balcony and garden. The ski slopes are within easy reach, with the lift and free ski bus both just a kilometre away.

If you ask us, we can’t think of a better way to wind down than with a relaxing soak or a refreshing swim.

Renovated in 2014, this traditional chalet has been filled with so many rustic but luxury touches, you might be distracted from the business of hitting the slopes of nearby Nendaz. We suggest exploring, however, as on your return a deep standalone bath and the home's private sauna are there to take away any aches and pains. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, dining tables have been positioned to soak up the Alpine views, through double-height glass windows indoors or on the home's long balcony outdoors. There's room for the whole party to sit and feast on raclette, fondue and barbecued delights. Bedrooms are snug and Swiss, with their sloping beamed ceilings and wooden walls – though the addition of skylights and French doors flood the space with sunshine. For cooler days, there's plenty of room in the living area – light the Scandinavian wood-burner and watch the sun set over the mountains.

There’s something wildly romantic about this home, a traditional chalet on the Swiss mountainside with modern twists – the slate living room wall is a masterpiece. Honey-toned woods and rich leathers create an atmosphere of warmth and light, no matter how much snow adorns the tops of the nearby Alpes Vaudoises, and with the home set over three storeys there’s plenty of space for all of your party to spread out and relax. We particularly love the bathrooms, that seem to test the limits of how stylish you can be in ski region Switzerland. The ski slopes of Villars-Gryon-Diablerets are a five-minute ride away on the free shuttle bus, but we wouldn’t blame you if you chose to spend the entire day sipping local wine on the balcony, soaking in the garden whirlpool, or just admiring that view over the mountains.
