This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. It's the perfect place to kick off your snow boots and unwind with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book.

Our favourite spot to soak up the sunshine (and the scenery) is the deck off the main bedroom. Enjoy a cup of coffee there in the morning before rustling up breakfast in the kitchen, then grab your skis and snowboards and hit the slopes. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

Full of character, it's as chocolate-box perfect as they come, with a private balcony and a Scandinavian wood stove in the living room. Recently refurbished, it's comfortable and surprisingly spacious.

Inside, it's floor-to-ceiling natural wood, with a high, vaulted ceiling and all the living space open-plan. A cosy sofa area and dining table are over by the warm fire, and the kitchen is fully kitted out for cooking at home. And while one bedroom and a bathroom are on this level, a climb up the wooden stairs reveals a typical loft room with sleeping space for up to four more.

Ideal as a base for walking or cycling in the summer – and with a storage room for your kit on the lower level – this home is also just a short drive from the ski area. Set in a little village, you'll experience an authentic stay in the Alps like no other.

While this chalet in Rairettes was built in 2013, its wooden walls, arched ceilings and slate roof make it feel quintessentially old-school Swiss. There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. Where do we start with this great chalet? First of all, the views from the balcony are fantastic. There’s a garden with a hammock and a hot tub, too – perfect for relaxing in. Inside, there’s more to keep everyone entertained including a games room and home cinema – there's also a wine cellar. We should mention that one of the twin bedrooms is on the mezzanine floor and has sloping ceilings so it's probably more suited for children. There’s also a sauna to unwind in after a day of skiing. Speaking of which – there’s a ski bus almost on your doorstep, and the piste is just 1 kilometre away.
