This smart apartment is in the heart of Meiringen in Switzerland, close to the setting of Sherlock Holmes’ infamous (spoiler alert) fictional – and faked – death at the Reichenbach Falls. The town has taken to its mysterious connection well, building a Sherlock Holmes Museum in a picturesque former church that fans of the sleuth will want to pay a visit to. For those visiting the area hoping for more skiing than sleuthing, you're also in luck. The ski region of Meiringen-Hasliberg has a total of fourteen lifts and twenty ski runs and is a kilometre away, while further afield you’re within easy reach of Axalp, Schilthorn and Jungfrau. For summer stays, we recommend bringing your hiking boots – there are hiking paths within fifty metres of the apartment, and you’re surrounded by stunning scenery such as the Aare Gorge. The apartment itself, part of an aparthotel, offers a serene and comfortable place to retreat to after a day of activities, with mountain views from the living room and private balcony. For extra relaxation make use of the building's sauna, while the storage room is great for keeping your bikes and skis secure.

This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. Serene Mountain Haven

On a pretty hillside, within sight of the snowcapped mountains, this historic chalet dates back to the late 1700s. Full of character, it's as chocolate-box perfect as they come, with a private balcony and a Scandinavian wood stove in the living room. Recently refurbished, it's comfortable and surprisingly spacious.

Inside, it's floor-to-ceiling natural wood, with a high, vaulted ceiling and all the living space open-plan. A cosy sofa area and dining table are over by the warm fire, and the kitchen is fully kitted out for cooking at home. And while one bedroom and a bathroom are on this level, a climb up the wooden stairs reveals a typical loft room with sleeping space for up to four more.

Ideal as a base for walking or cycling in the summer – and with a storage room for your kit on the lower level – this home is also just a short drive from the ski area. Set in a little village, you'll experience an authentic stay in the Alps like no other.

While this chalet in Rairettes was built in 2013, its wooden walls, arched ceilings and slate roof make it feel quintessentially old-school Swiss. There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. When you're done, head back to the plush pad for evening soaks in the deep bathtub or a session in the private sauna.

Admire the alpine plants, meadows and pine trees that surround the abode or relax on one of the wooden balconies. Our favourite spot has to be the swing chair – the view of the Alps are fabulous from both outside as well as inside. The large windows allow plenty of natural light – it really is a space you'll want to spend time in with your family or friends. When the alpine weather turns chilly, gather around the log burner with a glass of Génépi herbal liqueur.

This pretty village is perched on a south-facing hillside at an altitude of around 1200 metres, and it's 6 kilometres from Morzine. Col de l'Encrenaz, on the other hand, is 5 kilometres away – here you'll find many hikes like the "Tour du Roc d'Enfer" as well as snowshoeing and ski touring tracks. Alternatively, in the Summer, you can do some paragliding or mountain biking.

What we love about Le Chardon is how it retains that fresh-out-of-the-box feel with its sleek finishes and state-of-the-art appliances. With five bedrooms and five bathrooms, this home is perfectly equipped to accommodate a larger group without it feeling cramped, although we recommend maximising your time exploring the beautiful surroundings. Whether it's hiking in summer or gliding on the snow in winter, this part of the country is all about experiencing the wonderful outdoors.

Surrounded by the beauty of the Swiss Alps, this chic chalet is the perfect place to relax with the family. Start your morning with a coffee on the porch to take in the striking views – snow white or lush green as far as the eye can see depending on the season. Later, head indoors where wood panelled walls, faux furs and large glass windows lend a bright and rustic feel. Spend time in the sleek kitchen where a raclette grill and fondue set makes it easy to whip up a traditional meal. And in the evening, sit at the al fresco dining table to sip some wine under the stars, before heading to the in-house sauna for some zen before bed. If you seek adventure, this home is close to hiking trails and well-known ski resorts like Nendaz.

You’ll find this modern yet cosy apartment a minute’s walk from the La Vormaine slopes and a nineteen-minute drive from Chamonix, Europe’s best place for freeride skiing. Spend your days carving down pistes, warming up with decadent hot chocolates in bustling cafes and tucking into hearty French dishes in white-tablecloth restaurants. 

When you’re ready for some downtime, your pad’s inviting living space awaits. We loved the full-height ceilings and soothing neutral colour scheme. Fall back onto the couch and toast your toes in front of the contemporary wood-burning stove before browsing the books and board games and fixing a platter of nibbles in the fully-equipped kitchen. Step out onto your private balcony to watch the sun dip below the serrated peaks and when the stars begin to appear, retreat to your quiet bedrooms for a night of deep, restful sleep. 

Chocolat Chaud

Renovated in 2014, this traditional chalet has been filled with so many rustic but luxury touches, you might be distracted from the business of hitting the slopes of nearby Nendaz. We suggest exploring, however, as on your return a deep standalone bath and the home's private sauna are there to take away any aches and pains. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, dining tables have been positioned to soak up the Alpine views, through double-height glass windows indoors or on the home's long balcony outdoors. There's room for the whole party to sit and feast on raclette, fondue and barbecued delights. Bedrooms are snug and Swiss, with their sloping beamed ceilings and wooden walls – though the addition of skylights and French doors flood the space with sunshine. For cooler days, there's plenty of room in the living area – light the Scandinavian wood-burner and watch the sun set over the mountains.

Blanc De Blanc

Nestled into the mountainside, this isn't your average French chalet. This incredible home was built in 2020 and has a contemporary industrial vibe with a mix of concrete, wood, marble and stainless steel finishes. Select a book from the Charlotte Perriand-inspired library and curl up on one of the comfy sofas or admire the view from the panoramic windows. After a day of skiing or hiking, relax with a brandy in front of the stylish fireplace. Later on, cook a feast of French delicacies in the sleek kitchen, or retire to the cosy TV room and watch your favourite movie. Surrounded by rolling meadows, the ski resort of Morzine is a lively destination with a vibrant après scene. Here you can do all the usual winter activities such as snowmobiling, tobogganing and skiing, as well as ice-diving at nearby Lac de Montriond. This Alpine town is a year-round option, though, with many shops, bars and walking trails nearby.
