Big baths await to soak tired muscles in bedrooms and bathrooms, our favourite being the stretched tub in the master suite – we're pretty sure there's room for two. If you're visiting in summer, a spacious garden and terrace furniture is perfect for catching the sunset, and if you need a break from all that cheese, you can fire up the barbecue.

Surprise Me

Picture a classic Swiss mountain retreat. Now add some polish and some chic mid-century style furniture and you are closer to what’s on offer here. Part of a small collection apartments, this home is just the ticket for an escape in the great outdoors. It sits at the entrance to a large forest, beyond which lush green or snow-capped peaks (depending on the time of year) stand tall. Recently refurbished, it's comfortable and surprisingly spacious.

Inside, it's floor-to-ceiling natural wood, with a high, vaulted ceiling and all the living space open-plan. A cosy sofa area and dining table are over by the warm fire, and the kitchen is fully kitted out for cooking at home. And while one bedroom and a bathroom are on this level, a climb up the wooden stairs reveals a typical loft room with sleeping space for up to four more.

Ideal as a base for walking or cycling in the summer – and with a storage room for your kit on the lower level – this home is also just a short drive from the ski area. Set in a little village, you'll experience an authentic stay in the Alps like no other.

Chocolate & Charm

While this chalet in Rairettes was built in 2013, its wooden walls, arched ceilings and slate roof make it feel quintessentially old-school Swiss. There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. When you're done, head back to the plush pad for evening soaks in the deep bathtub or a session in the private sauna.

And, with the city centre of Lugano just a ten-minute drive away, you can visit the museums, take a dip in the lido, and stroll through the serene Parco Ciani with ease.
