In fact, it’s so close, that in the winter you can often ski right up to the building. With a compact but cosy living area and timber bunks for the kids, it’s ideal for a small family. You’ll have use of the resort’s impressive facilities, including the bistro, sauna, steam room, playroom, gaming room and spa. Carve up the slopes by day, with the most incredible views as your backdrop, and come back for a soak in the hot tub before that all important après-ski activity in the bar. Then gather your group in your snug apartment and get the fondue set – borrowed from the resort reception – bubbling. Or if all that hard work on the slopes means you’re not in the mood to cook, just wander down to the bistro and let the chefs look after you.

But if you’d prefer to take it easy, unwind in the nearby wellness centre or bob about in the outdoor swimming pool, just a two-minute walk from your doorstep. 

Inside the home, the open-plan living space is the perfect place to kick back with a mug of hot cocoa after a busy day of exploring. Cook up a storm in the fully-equipped kitchen and serve to your loved ones at the dining table. After a glass of wine on the private balcony, retreat to quiet bedrooms for a restful sleep, ready to do it all again in the morning.

If you're after a view, then you'll love this home in Dongo. Here, the beauty of the surrounding mountains accompanies a glimpse of Lake Como – if that's not an idyllic setting, we don't know what is. You can enjoy the scenery both indoors and out, whether you're cooling off in the private pool, nursing a glass of wine on the terrace, or unwinding in the contemporary living area. Just note that one guest will sleep on a sofa bed. When you're ready to explore, Menaggio is 13 kilometres away.

Lake Meets Mountains

This quiet hilltop apartment with mountain and river views from a private terrace is all about rest and reset. Set in a small village two kilometres outside Sorico, besides nearby hiking trails and a local park and bar, there's little else within walking distance. But for us, that's all part of the charm – and Lago di Como and Lago di Mezzola are just a short drive away when it's time to join the bustle. It's worth noting, at full occupancy, the last two guests will share a sofa bed in the lounge. While this won't suit everyone, it would work out great for a small family sharing.

It's tucked up on the top floor of a building that couldn't look more quintessentially Swiss if it tried, and blends a slightly retro character with quite a few luxuries. You'll find separate balconies facing north and south, and a modern log burner, along with a private lift to your apartment. The wood-clad interiors will fulfil your log cabin fantasies, and it's just an eight-minute walk to the cable car. This car-free Swiss village has everything you could possibly want for your stay; slopes for skiing and hiking, mountain bike trails to explore, and opportunities to brave paragliding – and there are shops, a restaurant, and a bar nearby.

Renovated in 2014, this traditional chalet has been filled with so many rustic but luxury touches, you might be distracted from the business of hitting the slopes of nearby Nendaz. We suggest exploring, however, as on your return a deep standalone bath and the home's private sauna are there to take away any aches and pains. Whether you're visiting in summer or winter, dining tables have been positioned to soak up the Alpine views, through double-height glass windows indoors or on the home's long balcony outdoors. There's room for the whole party to sit and feast on raclette, fondue and barbecued delights. Bedrooms are snug and Swiss, with their sloping beamed ceilings and wooden walls – though the addition of skylights and French doors flood the space with sunshine. For cooler days, there's plenty of room in the living area – light the Scandinavian wood-burner and watch the sun set over the mountains.

On the slopes of Lake Como, this villa is a short drive from the village of Colico (7 kilometres away) and the buzzing lakeside town of Varenna (14 kilometres away). The garden backs onto the lakeside, and you’ve got a view of the glassy water from the swimming pool and private hot tub – perfect after a day of watersports on the lake. Dining and sunning terraces take in the beautiful view from all levels. Inside, big windows in the bedrooms let you wake to a lake view. There’s a certain charm to the 1960s decor and the kitchen is sleek and modern – it comes pre-stocked with groceries and you'll be welcomed with a complimentary dinner.

Built in 2020, you’ll find this pristine chalet just a nine-minute walk from the picture-perfect ski village of Nendaz, overlooking the Rhone Valley. Looking for a family-friendly apartment with knockout views? This home, on the northern side of Lake Como, should do nicely. Granted, the bedroom's interiors may feel pared back for some, but the main living space opening onto that lengthy private balcony makes up for that. The shared small garden downstairs with a barbecue and Boccia is a nice touch, too. Although only four kilometres from the shops, bakeries, gelateria, restaurants and pebble beach of Domaso, this apartment is on a steep hillside. We recommend hiring a car to get the most out of your stay.

It’s a fifteen minute walk to the Colico ferry pier where you can hop on a water taxi to beautiful lakeside town like Varenna and Bellagio. The home has an eco-friendly vibe with solar panels on the roof and the facade of a clapboard cabin. Set in a wooden deck, even the swimming pool feels natural. After a blistering afternoon on the endless slopes of LAAX, you can ski almost all the way home to this resort apartment, just 50 metres from the lifts. Or in the summer months, you can hike home forty minutes from the forest lake of Caumasee, on the site of the biggest prehistoric rockslide in the Alps. Whichever activity you’re drawn to, this apartment will be ready to welcome you back with its chic minimalist vibe.

The exterior of the block is wonderfully modern, almost leaning toward Brutalist ideals. Grey concrete blocks and asymmetric windows create an interesting contrast to the lush green lawns and thick forests of summer, but blend in with the grey skies and white landscapes when the region becomes swathed in snow. Inside, things are cosy all year round. Wooden features, walls, and understated furnishings make this a fuss-free spot where you can hang up your hiking boots or skis and sip hot cocoa.
