You’ll have use of the resort’s impressive facilities, including the bistro, sauna, steam room, playroom, gaming room and spa. Carve up the slopes by day, with the most incredible views as your backdrop, and come back for a soak in the hot tub before that all important après-ski activity in the bar. Then gather your group in your snug apartment and get the fondue set – borrowed from the resort reception – bubbling. Or if all that hard work on the slopes means you’re not in the mood to cook, just wander down to the bistro and let the chefs look after you.

This cosy chalet shows off the idyllic views in every direction and makes an ideal base for anyone exploring the region. When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

We were sold on those views of Lake Maggiore alone – and that was before we'd even clapped eyes on the panoramic sunny terrace and newly refurbished interiors of this townhouse. As we're finickity, the downstairs living space feels a little bijou, but with that covered panoramic balcony outside, we don't think you'll mind. And kids will love the novelty of the top-floor mezzanine bedroom with a TV den to spill out into. Perched amidst the hillsides, 700 metres above the lake, you're quietly removed from the bustle. But when it's time to dip your toes into lakeside living, Stresa's grand promenades and history-rich streets bustling with trattorias are just a five-minute drive away.

While this chalet in Rairettes was built in 2013, its wooden walls, arched ceilings and slate roof make it feel quintessentially old-school Swiss. There's a smart twist, however, with floor-to-ceiling windows at the front of the home that give unparalleled views over the snow-capped mountains. Whether you're cooking in the pine kitchen, cuddled round the feature fireplace or squashed onto the crushed velvet sofa, eyes will invariably gaze out over the magnificent vistas. In the summer, it's out to the home's balcony and grassy garden for barbecues, alfresco feasts, and even a spot of tanning on the loungers if it's warm enough. Mountain trails – both hiking and skiing – can be found not far from the plot for days exploring ridges and new pastures. When you're done, head back to the plush pad for evening soaks in the deep bathtub or a session in the private sauna.
