Tucked back from the hustle and bustle of the ever-popular harbourside hotspot of Nyhavn, this spectacular apartment ranks among our favourites in the city. 

A large open-plan living area is the focal point of any stay here, with a sleek handleless kitchen, a typically stylish mid-century dining table and chairs, plus a comfortable seating area. It's lined with windows along one side, letting in plenty of natural light during the day. When night falls, elegant pendant lights illuminate the space.

Stride out into the picturesque pocket of the city. This 17th-century canal, lined with colourful houses and stunning sailboats, continuously tops lists of Copenhagen's must-see sights, and it's easy to see why. But, while it may attract the tourists, there's no doubt that the locals love it just as much, and you'd be hard-pushed to find a better spot in the city to enjoy a cold beer on a warm summer's afternoon.

To the east, a bridge connects you to the cafes and canals of Christianshavn and the hippie haven of Christiania, where quirky self-built homes line the lake. While to the west lie Copenhagen's pedestrianised shopping streets and the low-key creative cool of Kødbyen, also known as the Meatpacking District, a ten-minute bike ride away.

You're right in the thick of things at this smart downtown apartment, perched along Copenhagen's shopping mecca of Strøget. The metro is just 100 metres from your door, though we doubt you'll need it with buzzy Nyhavn Harbour and countless happening restaurants and cosy cafes within walking distance. It's worth noting if four of you share, the last two guests will have to make do with the sofa bed in the living space. You'll also need to prepare for some street noise from time to time. But we'll take that for a home with such an unbeatable location.

Looking for a central location near Copenhagen's landmarks? This minimalist apartment is a great choice. In five minutes, you can walk to the Royal Palace, Nyhavn, and Strøget, the famous shopping street. The design may be pared-back, but it's done well. There's an eat-in kitchen but no proper living area, so you'll need to unwind around the table. It's also on the third floor and doesn't have a lift. Still, we think being in such a convenient spot is worth it.

It elegantly blends wooden furniture, green plants and photos taken by the host himself to form a modern minimalist home with plenty of charm. You are a five-minute walk from Nyhavn and all of its cultural attractions. If you feel like experiencing the city in a different way, you can also sit down on the sunny balcony with a cup of coffee and watch Copenhageners go about their day.

If you’re searching for classic Scandinavian design in a fantastic location, this apartment delivers. Located on the third floor of a historic building without a lift, there is plenty of space for a group of nine to relax after a day of exploring. It’s worth noting there is only one bathroom here, but it's ideal for remote workers with dedicated desk space and families will appreciate the children’s amenities available for an additional fee. From here, it’s just a short stroll to the bars and restaurants of Nyhavn, while shops and historic sights are also within walking distance.

As expected for an 18th-century Copenhagen home, the layout of this large and oh-so-stylish studio is a little kooky. One bedroom with a handy desk nook is tucked into the eaves on a mezzanine, so it's not the most private of spaces. The living area, which houses a sofa bed for two guests, forms part of the main bedroom. And while the balcony is a bonus, it's pocket-sized. But you can't quibble with the location. Set slap bang in the middle of Indre By, you're within walking distance of all the city's must-sees. Get off to a flying start at the shopping mecca of Strøget – it's right outside your door. Just note that this is a central, noisy area – light sleepers may want to pack earplugs.

There are thoughtful touches like vintage illustrated posters hanging on the wall above comfortable furniture from New Scandinavian Design maestros, Bolia. The glass-walled bedrooms are definitely a novel touch and create a strong impact. They certainly won't be to everyone's taste, but all have velvet curtains to pull across for some privacy when needed. With views onto Copenhagen's main shopping street, Strøget, you couldn't be better placed to hit the luxury boutiques and independent shops when the mood takes you. Plus, you're not far from the colourful waterside bars and restaurants of Nyhavn or the high culture of the Royal Danish Theatre – a little over a five-minute walk away.

Finished with bright furnishings and a touch of boho charm, the spacious room is lit up with not one, not two, but six windows. After preparing meals in the snazzy kitchen, you have a choice of places to dine – at the breakfast bar, the eight-person dining table, or outside in the sun (that's our pick, weather permitting). 

When it's time to explore the city, you won't have to travel far to take in Copenhagen's best sites. The cobbled Kongens Nytorv square is barely a five-minute walk away, and from here Nyhavn's colourful waterfront is another short hop. Enjoy lunch with a waterfront view, then meander through the characterful streets towards Christianshavn, a unique network of small islands. With crooked, creaky floors, it’s oozing old charm – and paired with Matilde’s artwork, instruments, and personality, it becomes one of a kind. She’s an opera singer and works just down the road in the Royal Opera House, which only makes this home even more special.

You couldn’t ask for a more central spot for this Indre By apartment, set just steps from the iconic Magasin du Nord department store and a short stroll from Tivoli Gardens. Need to be someplace fast? The Metro is only minutes away, making exploring every corner of Copenhagen easy. Inside, the Scandi interiors of this light-filled home speak for themselves. That said, there are a few compromises to be made here. The main bedroom sleeps four, with both a double bed and a sofa bed, while a living room sofa bed sleeps another two. While this won’t suit everyone, it could work out great for a small family or close-knit group.

Once the stomping grounds of ashore sailors seeking romance and adventure, this penthouse apartment has 400 years of history to its name. The half-timbering style pays homage to its heritage, but the rest of the design is contemporary. Layout-wise, it's quite quirky – the bedrooms have glass walls, the bathroom has two showers and two toilets, and two guests will sleep on the sofa bed. It's also on the third floor of a building without a lift. But the location is hard to beat. The picturesque Nyhavn waterfront is steps away. There's also a cafe in the courtyard downstairs, perfect for a laid-back coffee.

Alexander clearly has a passion for Danish design, with works by Bang & Olufsen and Hans J. Wegner adorning every corner. There’s also a fantastic rooftop terrace with a nine-person hot tub, sun beds and a lounge arrangement, plus fantastic views of Copenhagen's historic buildings.



Master of Light

Ideally located and only two minutes from Amalienborg Palace, this stylish and immaculate home with plenty of space. With four bedrooms, two living spaces and an open-plan kitchen/dining area, large groups will be very comfortable here. The glass-walled bedrooms might leave you feeling a little exposed, but they are a cool design feature that adds a unique feel. As well as being close to the Queen's winter residence, you're also only a five-minute walk from the iconic canalside district of Nyhavn. It's the perfect place to while away a long summer's evening. Either with a cold one on the quayside like the locals or at one of the many restaurants overlooking the old tall ships.

This contemporary apartment is perfect for a group of friends or a family looking for a comfortable base in Copenhagen. It’s in a quiet building facing a courtyard, in the charming old city. The royal palace, Nyhavn, and Strøget are all five minutes away – you couldn’t ask for a more central location. The apartment has been designed to be a creative nest and a comfortable home-from-home. You don’t need us to tell you that there’s plenty to do here but if you’re looking for recommendations, why not wander over to the terraces at Sankt Annæ for a light breakfast before making your way to Jægersborggade for a spot of boutique shopping? We particularly love all the original features including the wooden beams, exposed brick walls (and even the creaky floors), which mix beautifully with the hosts’ collection of books and vintage furniture. Since the apartment was renovated in 2013, it has been featured in several lifestyle magazines for its charming design aesthetic. Spread across three floors, unique quirks include the rather rustic ladders that take you up to the second and third floors. Curl up in a cosy corner with a book in hand and live the scene of what seems like it could be a fictional dream. Alongside world literature, the host also supplies guests with access to gym equipment, should you wish to keep up with your fitness routine while visiting Copenhagen. Around the apartment, the immediate area feels very local – the Christianshavn canals are just two minutes away, and so are plenty of restaurants. All in all, it's safe to say that this home is perfectly out of the ordinary.

Timber House

Embrace the laid-back maritime atmosphere of the neighbourhood during your stay at this unique, open-plan apartment. Its enviable location on the top floor means that it offers enviable views over the area, but it's illuminated from both sides, providing you with plenty of natural light to enjoy throughout the day. Not that you'll be in much with the delights on your doorstep.

Made up of a collection of small islands, Christianshavn is best known for its cafe culture and canals lined with colourful boats. You're just 500m from the alternative hotspot of Freetown Christiania, while the super impressive Copenhagen Opera House is a couple of kilometres away (it's hard to imagine two more dramatically different cultural centres). Further north, Copenhagen Street Food is ten minutes by bike, where you can sample inventive international cuisine. For travellers interested in design, atmosphere and culture, it doesn't get much better than Christianshavn.

After a day spent exploring the area, head back home for dinner cooked in the well-equipped kitchen and a chance to put your feet up on the sofa. Then, when your eyes start to get heavy, take yourself off to the cosy bedroom for a fantastic night's sleep.

Down the Golden Stairs

This home has gone all-in on the bold and clean design aesthetic. While it might feel a bit sparse to those who prefer personal touches, the Danes don't mess about when it comes to clean lines and functionality. The bedrooms have a bright and open feel, with the master enjoying direct access to a shared outdoor space, while the second bedroom boasts some ornate wood panelling as a nod to the age of the building. It's seriously central, making it an excellent base for exploring the city on foot. With a view of Strøget (Copenhagen's main pedestrianised shopping area), you couldn't be better placed to spend some of those krone burning a hole in your pocket in all the uber-chic boutiques. Sample some of Copenhagen's history by visiting the Rundetaarn – the oldest functioning observatory in Europe is a five-minute walk – while Nyhavn's many waterside eateries are ten minutes away.

The Close-Up is on the small side, but it’s got lots of cool decorative elements, striking colour combinations, and sleek white floors. Located in a quiet backyard to a street packed with beautiful classicist and Rococo architecture, this studio home’s revamped interiors feel like a modern hideaway in a historic part of Copenhagen. The kitchen is basic and not suitable for cooking elaborate meals, but who says you even have to cook when you’re close to gems like Bistro Royal, Geist and Havfruen.

Each of the five bedrooms is as light-filled and stylish as the next, and there’s plenty of space to get together for breakfast in the dining kitchen. New Nordic is one of those homes that are just so effortlessly sophisticated. As soon as we stepped foot here, we were sold. The amalgamation of well-curated art and industrial-style furniture in a repurposed 1700s shell with lots of charisma makes it a very special place. Even though you’re right in the heart of Copenhagen, it feels like a tranquil haven with lots of space for contemplation. You also can’t go wrong with the charming views of traditional yellow timber-framed houses and copper-clad roofs.

Euphoria is a hidden gem. It’s got an abundance of personality, bright colours, a rock’n’roll-worthy collection of guitars, and Danish Modern furniture that’s to die for. We also love the charm of the historic building with wooden beams, sloped ceilings, and crooked, creaky floors. Set against the backdrop of picturesque Christianshavn Canal, you’re in a cosy neighbourhood, beloved by locals. Especially perfect for artsy bohemian souls, a stay at Euphoria is an experience that’s waiting to happen.

The Alphabet oozes Copenhagen charm. Not only is it a loved home with personality aplenty, but you’re also so central that you can see beautiful Copenhagen spires and copper-clad roofs from the terrace. We love how this two-bedroom home juxtaposes contemporary Danish design with design classics like the Safari Chair and the PH 80 floor lamp. It’s very clearly a family home, so expect to feel a cosy and caring atmosphere as soon as you walk through the door.  


The Alphabet

On the third floor of a beautiful 1870s building, we find Opera Diva. It has expressive interiors with a mix of Scandinavian chic furniture and antique pieces that are paired with some of the host’s own illustrations. And it also comes with a bathtub, which is something we rarely see in Copenhagen. As as an added bonus, one of the most famous Danish opera singers lives next door – and even though she’s retired, you can still hear her practising her singing now and then.

Adorned with beautiful wooden beams and gorgeous windows reminiscent of its warehouse past, Out of the Woods is a very special home. For what it lacks in luxuriousness, it makes up for with its charming location – Christianshavn is a unique part of Copenhagen with local restaurants, bars and endless canals. To some, it might be a disadvantage that the bedrooms don’t have any curtains, but who could say no to enjoying the breathtaking views of the rows of colourful houses and picture-perfect Church of our Saviour at any time of the day?
