Seventy-five metres from the beach and with two outdoor terraces to choose from, this family-sized home makes for a fabulous seaside holiday. Located in the heart of Sitges, stroll two minutes to reach the lounger-lined sand of Sitges Beach, and spend evenings exploring the tapas joints, seafood restaurants and cosy little wine bars of the old town. A seven-minute stroll will take you to Sitges train station.

A tall and slender townhouse, the designers of this townhouse have created a homely spot, packed with curios and object d’art. The ground floor is dedicated to the open kitchen, dining and living room. Double doors lead from the kitchen to a quiet little courtyard with a bistro set. Going up a level, there’s an office area on the landing furnished with books and a desk made from reclaimed window shutters. The first, smaller terrace is up here too, with comfy chairs for evening drinks. 

On the second floor, you’ve got a second seating area for a quiet moment with a good book and up one more level, on the top floor, a sofa bed provides the sleeping space for a fifth and sixth guest. This is where you’ll find the crowning glory of this home – the rooftop terrace. This home might only be forty-five minutes' drive from Barcelona, but it feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. Hidden away in the middle of a vineyard surrounded by mountains, this traditional property is perfect for those looking for a little slice of solitude.

It's the sort of address in which you'll want to spend as much time outdoors enjoying the rural tranquillity as possible and there's a multitude of ways you can do that here, whether you prefer to siesta in the hammocks, cook up a storm on the barbecue or go for a dip in the swimming pool.

The interior is traditional in style, with whitewashed walls, wooden ceiling beams and terracotta tiling underfoot exuding rustic charm. There's a wood-burning fireplace for once the sun's gone down, but if it's still warm enough outside, you could use the fire pit instead.

Although you could very happily hole up at the address for a while and never feel the need to leave, your host can lend you a mountain bike to explore the locale or arrange a tasting at a local vineyard. The nearest town of Vilafranca del Penedès sits five minutes' drive away and offers a market and plenty of restaurants, but the seaside resort of Sitges can be reached in not much longer than twenty minutes in the car.

You might find it hard to believe that this home is only an hour's drive from Barcelona. Wander about the six hectares of virgin forest on which this 17th-century country home sits and you'll feel a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Taken over by chef Sophie Ruggles in 2017, the Australian chef converted the property into an eco-friendly gastronomic travel destination in which people can hold private events, enjoy personalised culinary experiences or simply enjoy the tranquillity of the Catalonian landscape. If you're in that latter group, there are plenty of ways to do just that, whether you're paddling about in the natural pool, lounging on one of the terraces or sitting around the fire pit once darkness descends.

The home's interior leans on the region's rustic architectural traditions, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and terracotta tiling, but is otherwise marvellously contemporary, particularly the stylish bedrooms and sleek bathrooms. There's a modern kitchen in the house in case you fancy cooking for yourself, but there's another larger space in the converted barn in which Sophie can organise cookery classes, wine tastings or private chefs.

In the surrounding region of Alt Penedès, you'll find a wealth of walking routes, quaint hilltop towns and historic castles to visit. If you're craving a day by the seaside, however, the coastal town of Sitges is only fifty minutes away by car and offers a large range of sandy spots and coves to explore.

An Appetite for Life

Wide, expansive rooms decorated in deluxe fittings exude the feel of a five-star hotel, yet the exotic palm trees and plant life emit a tropical beach vibe. Charmingly rustic in parts and brimming with luxury in others, this home oozes character from the moment you enter.

Inside, we loved the exposed stone walls adorned with agricultural tools, brick arches and characterful beams, as well as the cooling terracotta floor tiles. Large arched windows allow views out to the terrace and light to flood in. This home is the perfect romantic retreat for a couple seeking a tranquil setting within easy reach of Barcelona.

When you feel like exploring, we recommend a trip to stylish Sitges, just over 6 miles away. Here, you'll find sophisticated restaurants and bars, as well as gorgeous golden, sandy beaches.

Situated on the outskirts of Sitges, this traditional Spanish home is exactly what holidays in Catalonia are all about. Wake up to views of the Meditteranean hills from your bedroom before heading downstairs to enjoy the private terrace area where you can relax on sun loungers, grill up tasty vegetables for a Catalonian escalivada, or just wander around and admire the vibrant Meditteranean flowers blooming with colour in the sunlight. There's even a swimming pool area to enjoy, which is shared with other guests in the finca. But your terrace area will be private to you.

Hiring a car here is essential if you want to explore the local area or make quick trips to the shops. The town of Sitges is a fifteen-minute drive away and is home to a lovely beach in Plaja de Sitges. Further afield, Barcelona is a relatively short drive away and a must-visit while you're in Catalonia. We recommend the forty-seven-minute journey to Barcelona's Park Güell to admire Gaudi's magnificent art. Make sure to book well in advance though as it does get busy.

There's something intrinsically romantic about this 18th-century farmhouse nestled away among Catalonian hilltops. It might be something to do with the tranquil location and the plentiful spots out in the garden from which to enjoy this peace, whether that's paddling about in the swimming pool or dining on the covered terrace.

It might also have something to do with the home's rustic interior, which mixes together exposed stone walls, terracotta tiling and a traditional fireplace with opulent chandeliers and a large collection of artwork. Out through the windows, there are gorgeous views of lush Meditteranean vegetation — trust us, you won't get tired of waking up to that every morning.

Although you could pass a perfectly pleasant week without ever leaving the address, there's plenty to do and see in the local area. The golden beaches and lively nightlife of Sitges take fifteen minutes to reach in the car, while the quaint town of Canyelles and its castle is a seven-minute drive.

This Catalan wine finca has stood for over three-hundred years, but twelve years ago it underwent an impressive transformation. The home is now split into nine individual villas that makes it feel more like a private village instead of the finca it was in its previous life. The fact that each villa feels isolated – most with their own outdoor areas, and all of them with lounge, dining, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom space – allows each family a little bit of privacy, but without ever feeling completely removed from the rest of the group. As each villa has a slightly different feel to it – don’t worry, there are still a lot of the typical characteristics on display – each group will undoubtedly find one that they most relate to. 

Come together in the communal areas to dine alfresco, or relax poolside. Adults can take in the views as they enjoy tapas and wine from the region, whilst the kids play shoulder wars in the pool or explore every nook and cranny of the lush gardens, keeping an eye out for the palm, olive, fig trees. Take day trips out to explore the surrounding wine country only ten minutes away, or travel to Barcelona in just over thirty minutes. The beautiful coastal town of Sitges is also a stone’s throw away, and a beach day is a pretty easy way to please everyone.

This boho-luxe villa sits in the peaceful hills just above the coastal town of Sitges. It’s a fifteen-minute drive into Sitges, where you’ll find a promenade lined with grand mansions and sweeping sandy beaches. It’s often considered the Saint Tropez of Spain. For a cultural day in the city, take a day trip to Barcelona which is just under an hour’s drive away.

There’s plenty of space for a group to spread out, across the main house and an additional garden bungalow, all with suite-sized bedrooms. The interior is all Moroccan-style charm and rusticana, with a vaulted TV room lined with squashy sofas and mosaic tiles in the bedrooms. It’s not often we highlight a bathroom, but the master with its built-in soaking tub, oodles of space and wall of windows looking out over the rolling hills is more than worth a mention. There are traditional touches throughout  – wood-beamed ceilings and a huge old fireplace in the main lounge.

Outside is where the magic happens. A Roman-style swimming pool offers respite from the sun on hot days and there’s a shaded pool house with sofas to recline on post-swim. Perhaps enjoy a soak in the sunken hot tub. Dotted around the terraces you’ll find loggias for dining in the shade, loungers galore and lots of outdoor seating nooks. The only decision to make is which spot to enjoy a sundowner with that beautiful country view all the way to the sea. 

Hillside Breeze

Dating back to the 17th century, this country retreat sits in the pretty hamlet of Sant Pau d'Ordal. From your front door, you can stroll five minutes to a handful of restaurants and bars, and the surrounding countryside is dotted with vineyards to explore. Barcelona is just a half-hour drive away too, so you can spend the day spotting Gaudi's masterpieces in the big city.

The atmosphere here is blissfully peaceful, with church bells clanging on a Sunday morning and birds flitting between the trees in the garden. A series of plant-dappled courtyards and secluded terraces make up the outside space, shared between the three separate apartments that make up this home. Thick stone walls keep things cool inside, and wood beams run overhead for that traditional farmhouse feel. Each apartment has its own living area, so you’ve got three kitchens, three lounges and a big dining room for the whole group to choose from. Most of the bedrooms have direct access to an outdoor space too, be it a balcony or a sunny courtyard with tables and chairs. 

The Vine Harvest

This 17th-century cottage sits in the pretty hamlet of Sant Pau d'Ordal. From the front door, it’s a five-minute wander to a small selection of local restaurants and bars, you’re a stone’s throw from the Penedes wine region, packed with vineyards to explore. Barcelona is just a half-hour drive away too, so you can spend the day admiring Gaudi's masterpieces in the big city before returning to your peaceful country retreat.

If you’ve picked up a few local wines from the Penedes region, perhaps enjoy them in the sun-dappled stone courtyard, which feels distinctly 17th century with its alcoves and honey-hued stone. Thick stone walls keep things cool inside, and old archways are on display for that traditional farmhouse feel. Dark wood, antique furniture throughout is a charming touch and we love the provincial master bedroom with its own slender balcony for a quiet moment alone.

Amidst the dramatic backdrop of the sand-hued ancient castles and rolling hills of Plans de Sió sits this restored 16th-century farmhouse. Once a vineyard, the garden is now home to a stunning octagonal swimming pool, reminiscent of a Moorish plunge pool, a ping pong table, outdoor dining with a barbecue, and a wrap-around terrace overlooking the endless fields and forests. The view here is particularly breathtaking at sunset. Inside, the ancient stone walls are adorned with unique pieces by local artists and shelves show off trinkets from around the globe. The kitchen retains its old farmhouse charm, but shining chrome appliances give away the 21st-century make-over. A collection of outbuildings are now home to covered outdoor dining with the rustic simplicity of a monk’s refectory, and an old storeroom has been converted into a plush home cinema with velvet seats and perfect acoustics. Bedrooms feel hotel-grade luxurious, but what we really love are the retained old flourishes of the former farmhouse – stone tables for grinding corn, stone barrel rooms now holding bedrooms and a master bedroom in the old kitchen, still with its striking ancient hearth. Breakfast is also included every day.
