The Olive Green Arch

Gaudi might be famous for his work in Barcelona, but that hasn't stopped this home taking inspiration from the famous Catalan architect. A 200-year-old farmhouse has been turned into a slick, white-washed hangout. Modernist influences are seen in the rounded walls, arched doorways, and buckled pillars. The living room is far out, from the white pool and foosball tables to the huge semi-circular sofa. The master suite is the most impressive, sending out spaceship vibes with its round bed, droplet shaped fireplace and spacious curved bath. But not even the slinky interiors can compete with Mother Nature, as views over the hills and out to the sea abound from every angle. The garden has been planted with bougainvillea, which showers archways and dining tables with pink blossoms when it blooms. For special occasions, head to the home's club room, complete with a DJ hut and incredible sound system. Life will feel pretty amazing floating in the infinity pool or sipping cocktails on the terrace.

The countryside around this grand, Catalan mansion looks like a painting with verdant green forests meeting wildflower meadows. The view from the arched windows of the living room, across the green hills to the shimmering Mediterranean Sea, is a reminder that you’re just a ten-minute drive from the coast here. A day at the beach is possible at the secret bays of Cala del Crit and Cala el Golfet, both sandy coves hidden between the cliffs.

But we wouldn’t blame you if you ended up spending all your time at this luxurious, old-world villa instead. Sun terraces and shaded nooks offer sunseekers and wallflowers alike a place to spend the day. The fountain-fed Roman swimming pool invites you for a dip on a hot day and, wandering the expansive grounds, you’ll stumble across a tennis court and games area with ping pong. Outdoor dining is a treat with a huge table for the whole group in front of the summer kitchen and, if you’re hosting a special event, a marquee can be set up on the lawn.

The foundations of this home date back to the 14th century, and inside you can still get a feel for the medieval in the vaulted basement where you’ve got your own private spa. Down here, there’s an indoor swimming pool, steam room and sauna. Various lounges and sitting rooms allow the whole group to spread out and our favourite has to be the Rib-vaulted grand lounge with its Baroque painted ceiling harking back to a bygone era. Perhaps spend the evening taking it back to analogue in the library or snooker room.

Surrounded by holm oak forests in the heart of the Les Gavarres Natural Park, this villa is an ideal retreat for nature lovers. Outside, there are plenty of shady spots and the swimming pool provides respite on hot afternoons. When it comes to mealtimes, we recommend calling upon the help of your host to arrange for a private chef to take care of dinner. Inside, beds can be configured as doubles or twins upon request and there’s an office for anyone who’s mixing business with pleasure. Location-wise, Pals Beach is less than a twenty-five-minute drive away and the town of La Bisbal d'Empordà is reached in fifteen.

You’ll find large living spaces across two floors, making this a great spot for two groups of families looking for the occasional downtime. We loved the contemporary windows that flood the interiors with natural light, providing a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor living. Its stone-walled garden is in keeping with the home’s traditional charm and offers a lovely backdrop to the sunsets over the Pyrenees each night.

You’ll be making the most of those knockout sea views, whatever the weather brings, at this Costa Brava villa perched in a quiet neighbourhood next to the Cala Canyelles cliffs. You can expect to do some entertaining here, too, with an outdoor bar area, a terrace with barbecue for alfresco feasts, and a pool table to keep the night flowing. With a LEED Platinum certification, the sustainably restored villa will make you feel good about your footprint, too. Though there’s no air conditioning, there are cooling floors and ceiling fans. And while the bedroom suites are on the simpler side, they provide mountain views to wake up to each morning. Your host can arrange outdoor activities, including biking, horseback riding and hot air ballooning, or simply unwind by the saltwater pool while the kids bounce on the trampoline. 

The Spanish Farmhouse

Located on the coastal path between Llafranc and Calella de Palafrugell, this property is in one of the most beautiful areas of the Costa Brava. The sea views are expansive and lovely, and there is a small jetty on the lowest level of the home that grants access to Llafranc beach. You might hear some noise from neighbours due to the close-knit manner of the area's buildings, but you're within walking distance of several Llafranc restaurants, and it's easy to enjoy an authentic Spanish stay from this charming home.

Even before entering the house, we fell under the spell of its surroundings – the glistening pool, the stunning views, the huge garden, and the outdoor dining area, inviting you to plan those magical alfresco feasts that go on long into the warm, Spanish nights. You’ll enjoy absolute privacy and tranquillity here, the perfect setting to catch up on your holiday reads and relax in one of the many sun loungers dotted about. 

Come inside and be prepared for a beautiful treat – what the home’s façade promises with its old-world glamour, the interior more than delivers. We love the stone and wood details, the unique art pieces and furnishings, and the cosy, inviting ambience. There is more than enough space to snuggle up and enjoy a movie night or an afternoon of wine and conversation, with an ornamental fireplace to add to that homely feel. 

The bedrooms, situated upstairs, are another highlight: with plush, comfy beds, timelessly stylish furnishings, and beautiful wooden floors, you’re guaranteed a restful sleep.

Spread over two floors (prepare to climb some stairs), the ground floor features a beamed living area with a double sofa bed to accommodate your third and fourth guests. The upper mezzanine offers a comfortable bedroom with a desk and swing seat to unwind in. Located in the medieval town of Vilaür, you can explore its rich history and 13th-century Romanesque architecture on your doorstep, while the beaches of La Escala lie 18km away.

Inside, you’ll find wooden floors, cool, contemporary furnishings and vibrant pops of colour that brilliantly offset the whitewashed walls. The real wow factor is the living space’s wrap-around floor-to-ceiling windows though – take in views over Canyelles’ shimmering bay from your sofa, or better yet, head to the upstairs terrace to enjoy breakfast while feasting on the vistas. Afternoons call for lazing by the pool and soaking up the sun on one of the many loungers, while the little ones will love the play area and the dedicated children’s bedroom full of soft toys. Drive less than ten minutes to sandy Platja de Canyelles to dip your toes in the sea before coming back home for a soak in the sunken tub followed by a barbecue feast. When it’s time to turn in, watch the moon rise over the hills from the bedroom’s letterbox windows or private terraces before falling into a wonderfully peaceful night’s sleep.

This neat little apartment is a perfect spot for a family beach holiday. Set in a small fishing village, it’s in one of Costa Brava's most quaint areas – think sandy beaches, fragrant Mediterranean pines and fresh off the boat seafood. The light-filled rooms are clean and contemporary, with three bedrooms and a large dine-on balcony. You’re on the third floor of the apartment building, giving you unforgettable views across the sea and the resort. Kids will love the shared pool and play park, and beach bums will be in seventh heaven with sandy Playa S’Agaró-San Pol a short walk away. You’re within walking distance of the supermarket for breakfast bits or suppers on the terrace, and when you’re not in the mood to cook, there’s a great choice of restaurants which can be reached on foot as well.

Perfectly positioned on a hillside, a ten-minute drive from the pretty town of Begur, this villa is all about sea views and laidback living. The home is bright and cheerful, with bold splashes of colour that add warmth to the neutral palette. Your eye will most often be drawn outside, through the floor-to-ceiling windows that lead onto the large terrace. Trees surround the home, making it feel nicely secluded despite being part of a resort. 

When you’re not by the shared swimming pool – which is huge and inviting – you’ll likely spend most of your time on the terrace. There are sun loungers so sun-worshippers will be content, and there’s a lovely dining area too.
