And if there's one thing you can never have too much of in a home, it's light. We're in love with the kitchen and terrace, with views across the city and plenty of outdoor seating for everyone to enjoy breakfast in the sunshine. There's also a barbecue out here for alfresco summer evenings grilling dinner as the neighbourhood's residents return from work and things spring to life. While it might not be the most centrally located, the upmarket residential neighbourhood of Sarría offers a peaceful break from the bedlam of central Barcelona. Packed with posh homes, shops and restaurants, it was an independent town until 1921, when the city engulfed it. However, it still retains something of that small town Catalan charm without having to leave the city. If you're searching for an authentic Barcelona experience, then look no further.

The central location of this convenient address is a great asset and if this is your first visit to Barcelona – it doesn't get much better than this. Bedrooms two and three are both extremely small, but we won't hold this against an otherwise fab home. The living space might just be home to the most beautiful flooring in the Plum Collection – we are obsessed!

Arriving at its yellow entrance, this standout block is built in a traditional, Spanish Colonial style. This old-world grandeur continues through the front door, in majestic hardwood, with a solid marble staircase leading up to your apartment – but the interiors are a pleasant contrast.

Unwind on the leather sofa, or read your novel in the rattan chair in the lounge. Another excellent spot for relaxation is the private roof terrace with its outdoor sofa and dining table. We love the terracotta tiles and the spectacular views out to the modernist buildings of Barcelona. A steady theme of chocolatey tones paired with minimalistic furnishings made us feel like we were in the home of a deep thinker. Still, there are small details that breathe some warmth into the flat – the Catalan hydraulic tiles on the floor, the modern art on the walls, and the red velvet seats on the balcony. The balcony has a perfect people-watching view over the leafy boulevard below. The kitchen as black as backstage at a theatre and dramatically downlit, but it's not all style over substance as the cupboards are packed with everything you could want for self-catering. Should you need to catch up on work, the second bedroom doubles as an office. When it comes to clocking off you couldn't be better placed with Passeig de Gracia one block away, where Gaudí's masterpiece 'La Pedrera' and famous hotels like Omm and Hotel Casa Fuster reside. The apartment itself is in the 'Cuadrat d'Or' (Golden Square), an area packed with bars, restaurants and high-end shops galore.

There’s a lazy hammock in the corner too, so you can take in that rooftop view all the way to the Sagrada Familia. You'll be able to plan your holiday from the comfort of the terrace as Barcelona spreads like a map before you. Located only minutes away from Plaça Catalunya, you'll have easy access to all parts of the city. 

Phrenology

This inviting apartment with its contemporary and functional design is a great choice for a family or group of friends keen to explore Barcelona’s best bits. Located a stone’s throw from the Urgell metro station, you’re in easy reach of the atmospheric Gothic Quarter, bustling Plaça de Catalunya and unconventional Casa Milà. If you fancy a day at the beach, Platja de la Barceloneta is less than thirty minutes away. When it’s time for dinner, we recommend heading into the Eixample district for its sleek bars and restaurants. 

Back at home, a cosy living space with licks of calming light blue paint is the perfect place to unwind with a glass of Spanish wine. Should you feel peckish, the kitchen is equipped with everything you need for putting together charcuterie platters. Enviably located in the heart of Barcelona, footsteps from the Plaça de Catalunya and a bus ride from Barceloneta Beach, this apartment is an excellent choice for all travelling types. If you wish to stay as a group of ten, it’s worth noting there’s not enough comfortable seating, and it’s a bit of a squeeze around the dining table for that many people. The small balcony is a nice spot to enjoy a sundowner, and the kitchen is well-appointed for self-catering.

The Influence of Light

As far as homes in La Dreta de l'Eixample go, Caletre is a solid representation of the neighbourhood's architecture. Adorned with Modernist masterpieces, this part of Barcelona boasts great architecture on every corner and even the insides of an unassuming building like this one show some masterful craft. True, the street you'll be staying on is a little bit noisy, but we think that easy access to the cultural heart of town more than makes up for it. 

Caletre

Located on Rambla Catalunya – Barcelona’s main shopping street – this apartment puts you in a prime position to explore the city’s many central bars, restaurants and boutiques. Given its spot in the heart of the action, you may need to contend with some street noise throughout your stay. But there’s plenty to appreciate inside, not least of all the pad’s private terrace – perfect for sunny breakfasts and evening glasses of wine. The decor isn’t the most inspiring here but a sizeable kitchen will be appreciated by chefs of the group. And the home’s locale close to Casa Batlló, Casa Milà and Plaça de Catalunya makes sightseeing a cinch.
