Located in the heart of Sitges, stroll two minutes to reach the lounger-lined sand of Sitges Beach, and spend evenings exploring the tapas joints, seafood restaurants and cosy little wine bars of the old town. A seven-minute stroll will take you to Sitges train station.

A tall and slender townhouse, the designers of this townhouse have created a homely spot, packed with curios and object d’art. The ground floor is dedicated to the open kitchen, dining and living room. Double doors lead from the kitchen to a quiet little courtyard with a bistro set. Going up a level, there’s an office area on the landing furnished with books and a desk made from reclaimed window shutters. The first, smaller terrace is up here too, with comfy chairs for evening drinks. 

On the second floor, you’ve got a second seating area for a quiet moment with a good book and up one more level, on the top floor, a sofa bed provides the sleeping space for a fifth and sixth guest. This is where you’ll find the crowning glory of this home – the rooftop terrace. Out here, there’s enough room for the whole group to dine and view stretch over the rooftops of Sitges to the beach and sea beyond.

Amidst the dramatic backdrop of the sand-hued ancient castles and rolling hills of Plans de Sió sits this restored 16th-century farmhouse. Once a vineyard, the garden is now home to a stunning octagonal swimming pool, reminiscent of a Moorish plunge pool, a ping pong table, outdoor dining with a barbecue, and a wrap-around terrace overlooking the endless fields and forests. The view here is particularly breathtaking at sunset. Inside, the ancient stone walls are adorned with unique pieces by local artists and shelves show off trinkets from around the globe. The kitchen retains its old farmhouse charm, but shining chrome appliances give away the 21st-century make-over. A collection of outbuildings are now home to covered outdoor dining with the rustic simplicity of a monk’s refectory, and an old storeroom has been converted into a plush home cinema with velvet seats and perfect acoustics. Bedrooms feel hotel-grade luxurious, but what we really love are the retained old flourishes of the former farmhouse – stone tables for grinding corn, stone barrel rooms now holding bedrooms and a master bedroom in the old kitchen, still with its striking ancient hearth. Breakfast is also included every day.

It's not just the outside space that’s worth writing home about, though. Inside, traditional architecture combines with postmodern design to create stylish living spaces that you’ll be more than happy to linger in. While it may not offer the most inspiring views, the balcony lets in fresh air and limited natural light in the daytime. You'll want to pack light as storage space in the bedroom is tight, but you'll get a good night's sleep before a busy day. With restaurants, shops, and landmarks easily reachable on foot or public transport, you won't get much more central than this.

The garden is spacious, but it isn't the most private and it's likely you'll hear some noise from neighbours, so it might be worth packing earplugs. With Barcelona right on your doorstep though, you won't need a car here to have a great stay. If need be, you can reserve a parking space nearby.

Your hosts are professional photographers with a meticulous eye and have overseen every detail of its extensive 2022 renovation. The result is nothing short of spectacular – a home that combines the best of modern minimalism and late 19th-century features to create something totally unique. We loved the elegant design of the mid-century furniture contrasted against a state-of-the-art kitchen and ornate plaster mouldings lining the ceiling.

Children are sure to love the dedicated triple room, equipped with books, toys and costumes, while the ladder up to the bunk bed adds a sense of adventure to bedtime that should eliminate some of the struggles of persuading them that it's time to get some shut-eye.

Step out into the street, and you'll find yourself a short walk from Plaça de Catalunya, where the Eixample neighbourhood meets the old city. From here, you can enjoy a stroll along the bustling Las Ramblas before diverting off into the narrow lanes of the atmospheric Gothic Quarter and making a beeline for Barceloneta Beach. However, when little legs grow tired, the apartment is conveniently located to access the city's extensive metro and bus network, which will whisk you home in no time at all.
