This south-facing rooftop apartment is a real suntrap. Not only is the kitchen illuminated throughout the day, but all the bedrooms are blessed with large external windows too. And if there's one thing you can never have too much of in a home, it's light. We're in love with the kitchen and terrace, with views across the city and plenty of outdoor seating for everyone to enjoy breakfast in the sunshine. There's also a barbecue out here for alfresco summer evenings grilling dinner as the neighbourhood's residents return from work and things spring to life. While it might not be the most centrally located, the upmarket residential neighbourhood of Sarría offers a peaceful break from the bedlam of central Barcelona. Packed with posh homes, shops and restaurants, it was an independent town until 1921, when the city engulfed it. However, it still retains something of that small town Catalan charm without having to leave the city. If you're searching for an authentic Barcelona experience, then look no further.

This Sarria pad is an ideal base for families, friends and business travellers alike. For those in Barcelona for work, there’s a small yet handy office space in this home. But the cherry on the cake for us is the outdoor space. Sure, it’s a little overlooked in some parts by neighbouring homes, but it’s a small price to pay given its size. If you’re not sipping sangria in the sun, head out to explore the nearby eateries – tapas bars and a cafe and bakery popular with the locals are within easy reach.

The living room is a little cosy due to its angle, but it opens perfectly onto the private terrace – just the spot for sangria after a day of exploring. We recommend a trip to Sarrià market for some local produce to whip up a feast in the kitchen back home. And for those in the city for business, you’ll find a nook complete with a double desk, making remote work a breeze.

Back at this home, open the French doors to the balcony and have a seat on the comfy sofa after all that sightseeing. We love the high ceilings here and traditional wall mouldings. Eixample is the residential heart of Barcelona and famous for its modernist architecture – a prime example being the handsome building that this apartment sits within.

Inside, the design is a little more contemporary than the exterior, although there's a preference for mid-century furnishings that are currently en vogue. The white walls and bare wooden floors are reminiscent of some of the city's modern art galleries, especially with the large art prints dotted about the place. As well as that, the kitchen is both sleekly finished and decently sized, just in case you fancy a home-cooked dinner at any point.

The home's biggest perk, however, has to be the long balcony that stretches across the front of the address and overlooks the street below. Although it's not large enough to sit out on, it's still more than big enough for a burst of fresh air and a spot of people-watching. The tall doors leading out to this space also bring plenty of natural light into the interior, as well.

When you want to see a little more of the city, this apartment puts you in an excellent location to do so. As well as a wide range of restaurants and nightlife venues in the immediate vicinity, there are some of Gaudi's most famous projects to be discovered within walking distance, including Casa Batlló under a mile away. Barceloneta Beach is only 2.3 miles away when the weather calls for sunbathing and swimming in the Med.

With so much to see and do nearby, catching some respite from the city is easy here – as a soothing colour palette with calming wood tones and soft furnishings create a space boasting comfort and practicality. Sink into the plush "L" shaped sofa with a cup of tea, before running a bath and unwinding for a quiet night at home. For evenings when you're feeling most energised, lap up the ease of going on nights out too – it would be rude not to make the most of being able to walk out here after all. And of course, if you do plan on venturing further afield in the city, you'll have bus stops and metro stations within less than five minutes reach too.

Other aspects are a little more contemporary – you only have to look at the minimalist white kitchen to see what we mean.

Even though it sits among one of Barcelona's most bustling districts, there's something innately relaxing about the space, whether you're listening to a vinyl record with a breeze blowing in over the Juliet balcony or enjoying a meal cooked with locally bought ingredients on the round dining table.

And when it comes to sightseeing, you don't have far to venture from your front door. The mighty Sagrada Familia is less than a quarter of an hour's walk, as is Parc de la Ciutadella in the opposite direction. You're especially well served by cafes and restaurants in the surrounding streets, too.

Arriving at its yellow entrance, this standout block is built in a traditional, Spanish Colonial style. This old-world grandeur continues through the front door, in majestic hardwood, with a solid marble staircase leading up to your apartment – but the interiors are a pleasant contrast.

Pout yourself a tempranillo and take a wander around this modern, Scandi-style home. Huge windows lined with railings along a balconette are perfect for peering over with your wine glass in hand. The zen-like lounge offers somewhere understated and calming for you to relax in after exploring the bustling locale. Adorned with Modernist masterpieces, this part of Barcelona boasts great architecture on every corner and even the insides of an unassuming building like this one show some masterful craft. True, the street you'll be staying on is a little bit noisy, but we think that easy access to the cultural heart of town more than makes up for it.

Dancing Shoes is impeccable, sleek, and boasts enviable great urban views over Eixample – seeing the postcards sights of Barcelona will be effortless from your base on Avinguda Diagonal. Although this home doesn't have a lot of characterful furniture, we still liked the high ceilings and the abundance of natural light.

This apartment is on one of Barcelona's most fashionable boulevards, close to Las Ramblas and the late-night tapas bars of the Gothic Quarter. Passeig de Gràcia with its shops, restaurants and bars, is just a five-minute walk away. There’s a sense of old-world grandeur inside thanks to chandeliers and corniced ceilings, in keeping with the historic building. The apartment is family-sized, but might feel cramped at capacity with three in one bedroom and two on the sofa bed in the living room. Balconies off the living room and one of the bedrooms face Rambla Catalunya – perfect for people-watching.

Housed in a Belle Epoque, 19th-century building this apartment's interior is just as striking as the outside. A steady theme of chocolatey tones paired with minimalistic furnishings made us feel like we were in the home of a deep thinker. Still, there are small details that breathe some warmth into the flat – the Catalan hydraulic tiles on the floor, the modern art on the walls, and the red velvet seats on the balcony. The balcony has a perfect people-watching view over the leafy boulevard below. The kitchen as black as backstage at a theatre and dramatically downlit, but it's not all style over substance as the cupboards are packed with everything you could want for self-catering. Should you need to catch up on work, the second bedroom doubles as an office. When it comes to clocking off you couldn't be better placed with Passeig de Gracia one block away, where Gaudí's masterpiece 'La Pedrera' and famous hotels like Omm and Hotel Casa Fuster reside. The apartment itself is in the 'Cuadrat d'Or' (Golden Square), an area packed with bars, restaurants and high-end shops galore.

We didn't expect to find a home like this in an unassuming building like the one that hides the Trojan Horse. It's obvious that an interior designer was involved in the curation of this stylish home — there's a consistent theme of industrial chic, that's best expressed by the bare brick wall and sleek lampshades. There's an abundance of natural light with two balconies extending the clutter-free and clean living space and helping this relatively small home maximise its assets. Find a sunny reading spot by the window on a Wegner-inspired chair and gather around the vibrant dining area for convivial coffee and churros – we loved the bright yellow chairs. Both bedrooms benefit from tasteful scatter cushions, throws and quirky headboards that make for a light and airy spot to relax with a magazine. From Gràcia, all the major sights are well within walking distance, including the Sagrada Familia under twenty minutes away. Explore the local neighbourhood, stopping off at its trendy cafes and family-run eateries – wherever you are, a jug of sangria and a plate of paella are never too far from hand.
