This home is a rare find – it has a peaceful and private setting, and yet it's just a few minutes walk from the historic city of La Orotava. Surrounded by a plantation of avocados, relax on the multiple terraces (five no less), cool off from the Tenerife sun in the infinity waterfall pool with its Atlantic Ocean vistas or unwind in the hot tub. 

We love the professionally designed gardens – our favourite spot is the yoga/meditation corner –  very zen. There's a fantastic outdoor kitchen, too – cook up a feast while you enjoy the fabulous views of Mount Teide, the forests and hills. As sunset arrives, pick some mint for your mojitos from the herb garden or feel free to pick a lemon for your G&T. As the light continues to fade, gather around the designer fire pit. 

Or, on cooler evenings, cosy up in front of the wood-burning stove indoors. Here, you'll find gorgeous beamed, vaulted ceilings, as well as original pictures and sculptures.

There's plenty to do out and about too. Hire a bike and explore the terrain (many professional cycling teams train here). If you prefer something a bit less energetic, there are three golf courses within easy reach, including one designed by Seve Ballestros. The nearest beach is 3 kilometres away, along with the popular resort beaches and Lido in Puerto de la Cruz, while La Orotava has an array of cafes, shops, bars and restaurants within walking distance.

Right on the beachfront at La Canteras, this home has a fabulous spot. Take in the fantastic Atlantic and La Canteras Beach views from this home’s sunny and dazzling whitewashed terrace. You can even spot Mount Teide in Tenerife in the distance. We love this outdoor space, it's ideal for an alfresco breakfast (whizz up a drink in the juicer to accompany some churros). Later, do some sunbathing on the sun loungers. Inside, there are more of those fabulous vistas through the large sliding doors.

In the afternoon, perhaps head to La Canteras  Beach, under a minute stroll away. It’s one of the best urban beaches in the world, and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to sample in the vicinity too. Or, for a bit of culture, Las Palmas Cathedral is a ten-minute ride away. It’s a couple of minutes more to Casa-Museo de Colón, which documents Columbus’ voyages.

This comfortable, functional apartment is nestled between two of Gran Canaria's beautiful black sand beaches in the eastern region of Telde. The amenities may be more basic than refined, but everything is all in order, with the living area making room for a dining table and flowing into a well-equipped kitchen. The sleeping areas are cosy and agreeable, as is the bathroom, while the private balcony is a pleasant addition catching plenty of sun. You'll be moments from the neighbourhood's popular bars and restaurants, while you'll also have the choice of Melenara to the north and Salineta to the south for a relaxing and unique day at the beach.

The crisp, contemporary interiors of the home and building would perfectly suit guests visiting the city for work or couples looking for a fuss-free stay. Don't let its studio apartment set-up put you off – the space is well-equipped with a modern kitchen and obligatory coffee pod machine for morning brews. The only downside for some would be the lack of outdoor space, but we can forgive that when the sandy shores are so close.

Thanks to the central location, a car is not essential here, as you’ll have plenty of shopping and dining options to choose from within walking distance. Public transport options are also excellent if you want to explore further afield. The pad may be compact in size but there’s enough space here for two guests to be comfortable, and with good internet speed, you can also catch up on work during your stay – although you'll have to set-up shop around the dining table since there isn't a desk.

If you need to attend to a few pesky work emails, pull up a chair and get down to business at the desk. Situated within a villa complex less than ten minutes' drive from Maspolamas, this recently renovated home will sing to those fond of contemporary design.

There's a preference for minimalism in everything from the sleek kitchen to the pared-back approach to decoration, and we think the host has nailed it.

Besides, you might not actually be spending all that much time indoors, what with the swimming pool out in the garden, along with the barbecue and covered terrace complete with a lounge and alfresco dining table. Here, it's welcomingly easy to make the most of Gran Canaria's year-round warmth.

Elsewhere in the complex, there's a golf course 200m away from the home, as well as entertainment for children and a couple of shops and restaurants. You can also reach many of the beaches that run along the southern coastline of the island in under ten minutes' drive, while the Dunes of Maspalomas don't take much longer, either.

Walk through the town, stopping at the many markets on the way till you reach the stunning Old Town Harbour. Settle in for a feast of tapas and delicious local wines. Once you're through, explore the many beaches around, some bustling and others introspective. If you ever tire yourself out, escape with a taxi boat to Puerto Calero Marina, and uncover a more upmarket take on the beach life.
