Ochre-washed walls and vaulted ceilings bring all the historic charm, and in the central nave now lies a vast double-height living space. And don’t get us going on those hand-painted frescoes – best admired from upstairs on the lofty mezzanine level. And there are some surprising flurries of 21st-century living to indulge in here, too. Starting with that infinity pool with a counter-current swim jet to bank some laps as you soak up the jaw-dropping vistas of the Cordova Subbética mountain range.

As night falls, the home takes on a truly magical feel, with the lights of the nearby town, Algarinejo, flickering on and a blanket of stars twinkling above. Cosy up on the Balinese bed outside with drinks to catch a shooting star – we can’t think of a finer spot to toast a day’s end.

The town itself is nestled between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean sea, offering easy access to both. Much like the home, the town wears its Moorish influence on its sleeve and it's well worth spending an afternoon strolling through the old town and taking in the architecture. With the Spanish sun high in the sky, why not gather the family together and head to the beach in nearby Torre del Mar? Alternatively, witness the unstoppable resurgence of Málaga a little over half an hour away.

The gorgeous Balcón de Europa is a can't-miss – lined with swaying palm trees and built on the foundations of an old fort, the panoramic views from this lookout are absolutely incredible. With boutiques, bars and beaches aplenty, there'll never be a dull day in paradise.

We love that you don’t need a car here, as the centre of Nerja is just a fifteen-minute walk away. A stroll in the opposite direction will take you to Playa de Burriana, a long stretch of sandy beach known as the area’s top spot for swimming. You'll also find watersports and beach volleyball here if you're looking for ways to keep the kids entertained.

This apartment sits in a gated community at the heart of Axarquia. It’s in the first line from the beach, so you can admire sea views and stroll to the soft sand in no time. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. You’ll have access to the communal salt-water swimming pool, from which you can gaze out to sea as you float in the sunshine. There’s a communal gym, too, ideal for those keen to keep up their routine. We recommend bringing a car so you can drive twenty-five minutes to Malaga to see the sights. 

Saltwater Serenity

This stunning Andalusian villa is the perfect getaway for a holiday with your loved ones. The interior of the home is very nicely designed, but it’s the exterior we’re most enthusiastic about. With an infinity pool, ping-pong table and several lovely terraces (including a rooftop one) we don’t blame you if you’d like to spend all your time here. If you want the best of both – the beach is a thirty-minute walk away and the beautiful cities of Málaga and Granada are roughly an hour’s drive down the road.

Inside, there’s a kitchen with all the accoutrements for home cooking and an en-suite bedroom with access to the furnished terrace. While this home can sleep four guests, two will be on the sofa bed in the living area, which will compromise any social space. Sitting in the countryside between Málaga and Marbella, this typically Andalusian home is just the spot for a peaceful getaway during which you'll spend as many hours as possible in the great outdoors.

Part of the alfresco appeal is the dramatic landscape of hillsides and clouds rolling across the sky that greets you as you step out the back door.
