Sitting in the countryside between Málaga and Marbella, this typically Andalusian home is just the spot for a peaceful getaway during which you'll spend as many hours as possible in the great outdoors.

Part of the alfresco appeal is the dramatic landscape of hillsides and clouds rolling across the sky that greets you as you step out the back door. It makes for a lovely backdrop against which to paddle in the swimming pool, soak up the sunshine on one of the loungers or read on the shady pergola. Once nighttime starts to descend, you can fire up the barbecue and dine on the covered terrace.

Back inside, there are a fair few period features to be spotted, from the exposed brick fireplace in the corner of the living room to the vaulted wooden ceiling beams. You’ll find evidence of this restored old mill’s history, just outside Alhaurín el Grande, Andalusia. Original features have been preserved in the mill hall and kitchen, and an old millstone has been turned into a table for al fresco dinners, thanks to a full outdoor kitchen. In the orchard-fringed garden, there are several shaded terraces and patios and an inviting private pool to cool off. It’s a little dated inside, but some would say this adds to the country charm, especially the fireplace in the living room. This remarkable home dates back to the late 19th century but a quick tour will quickly show you that there have been a number of changes made in the ensuing years. For starters, the large swimming pool is a relatively recent addition – and a welcome one, at that – as is the huge Jacuzzi in its own separate annexe. There's a contemporary sleekness to the kitchen and bathrooms in the main house, as well.

That being said, a certain sense of heritage has been expertly retained during the recent refurbishment and there's an undeniable character in the exposed stonework, wooden ceiling beams and the elegant staircase that takes you up to the bedrooms. The tall verandah complete with a barbecue, alfresco dining table and views of the Andalusian countryside through the archways is an impressive feature, too.

Although the surrounding area feels peaceful, there are a pair of towns –Alhaurin el Grande and Alhaurin de la Torre – that both lie about 5km from the home. Torremolinos's sandy beach is a 15km-journey, while there are plenty of golf courses and prime hiking terrain to be discovered nearby.

Marbella is a fairly short drive away, and so are four golf courses – good news for any golfing enthusiasts in your party. Spend sun-drenched days in the golden sand of the closest beach or get a new appreciation for the native fauna by exploring the many hiking trails.

Dinnertime is particularly special. You can prepare meals together in the well-equipped kitchen to be enjoyed alfresco, surrounded by the dusk sky. Or, you can let your host arrange for a private chef to take care of that for you.

Being so close to not one but two 18-hole golf courses, a round or two is obligatory. If you never wanted to leave this slice of heaven other than to play golf or lounge on the beach, we’d understand. There’s enough to keep you entertained for weeks. But if you find yourself wondering what those scenic mountains look like up close, there are several hiking trails to explore. And with such big country roads, it’s perfectly safe (and fun) to roam the area on bicycles, discovering new places along the way.
