Looking for a one-of-a-kind home with a heaven-sent view to boot? Well, they don’t come more character-filled or awe-inspiring than this. Perched high on the hills of Granada and just a short drive from the sandy shores of Lake Iznajar, this ancient church is lovingly reimagined into a unique retreat for relaxation and reflection. 

Step inside, and the house seems so frozen in time you can almost hear the old church bell ring. Ochre-washed walls and vaulted ceilings bring all the historic charm, and in the central nave now lies a vast double-height living space. And don’t get us going on those hand-painted frescoes – best admired from upstairs on the lofty mezzanine level. And there are some surprising flurries of 21st-century living to indulge in here, too. Starting with that infinity pool with a counter-current swim jet to bank some laps as you soak up the jaw-dropping vistas of the Cordova Subbética mountain range.

As night falls, the home takes on a truly magical feel, with the lights of the nearby town, Algarinejo, flickering on and a blanket of stars twinkling above. Cosy up on the Balinese bed outside with drinks to catch a shooting star – we can’t think of a finer spot to toast a day’s end.

 Located among the Andalusian hills, this charming holiday home is part of a larger farmhouse and is split over two floors. The place is a little dated in parts but boasts nice features, such as a private swimming pool and Jacuzzi, with stunning views of the landscape. This home in the Andalusian countryside is very much away from it all. There’s nothing but olive groves, rugged hills and the odd farmstead for miles. The closest town is around a fifteen-minute drive away – El Saucejo – where you’ve got supermarkets for supplies and a handful of local restaurants and bars. Plus, the pretty town of Ronda with its famous gorge and the historic city of Seville are both around an hour’s drive away, ideal for a day trip or two.

Sitting just 200 metres from Torremolinos’ mile-long beach, this fuss-free apartment offers plenty in the way of relaxation. The private balcony is ideal for enjoying alfresco meals while savouring the balmy air, while the communal swimming pool is where you’ll want to spend your days working on your tan. At capacity, two guests will need to share the sofa bed in the living area and there’s a chance you’ll hear some noise from your neighbours throughout your stay. But for those hoping to soak up the Malagan sun on the beach and by an inviting pool, this practical pad is a winner.

With a prime position on the Andalusian coastline, it's actually possible to see the intense azure of the Mediterranean Sea if you step up to this home's rooftop terrace. What's most impressive about this address, however, is that this special view ranks pretty low on the list of perks.

That's to be expected when you have an outdoor space that has everything from a swimming pool, ping-pong table and a traditional stone barbecue for feeding fellow guests once tummies start to rumble. As well as that, there's an alfresco dining table on which you can enjoy the fruits of your labours, as well as a couple of peaceful balconies from which to gaze out at the rooftops of Almuñecar.

There's a lot to like inside as well. The design is fresh and contemporary, with a colour palette of soothing neutrals, no shortage of sleek surfaces and chic mid-century furnishings. You might be surprised to see the sauna given that is Spain rather than Scandinavia, but a quick sweat is an invigorating way to start the day.

And there are plenty of ways to fill the hours afterwards, too. San Cristóbal beach takes ten minutes to reach on foot, while the town's ancient castle and El Majuelo botanical gardens are another quarter of an hour on top of that.

Overlooking the first and second holes of a neighbouring golf course, we feel compelled to stress that this villa is way more than a glorified viewing platform. By all means, sit out on the balcony and watch players make their way along the fairway, but if you're not into the sport, why not paddle about in the heated infinity pool, sit back in the Jacuzzi or cook up something tasty on the barbecue instead?

We're happy to tell you that there are plenty more thrills inside, too. In the games room, you'll find a pool table, bar and kitchenette, while the huge kitchen will be appreciated by the culinary gifted. Elsewhere, there are a couple of elegant bathtubs in which you can luxuriate after a long day exploring the local area.

And there is plenty to see around here. The yachts and shops of Puerto Banús marina take less than ten minutes to reach in the car, and there's also a beach there, too. The historical centre of Marbella is a twenty-minute drive as well.

The Swing of Things

Perched just above the Andalusian coastline, this southeast-facing villa is the perfect base for a sun-kissed vacation in the south of Spain. 

Inside, traditional Balearic features, such as the terracotta tiling and open-hearth fireplace, combine effortlessly with pops of colour to create a chic and enchanting space. We're particularly fond of the sleek minimalist kitchen and bold prints found throughout the rooms.

Take a look outside and it's not hard to imagine yourself by the saltwater pool with your favourite book in hand, or tending to the barbecue once the sun's gone down. The whitewashed walls are traditional in style and lend a sense of privacy, but peek over the top and you'll see the Mediterranean Sea stretching into the distance.

As you can probably guess from this view, the beach isn't too far away — in fact, the golden sands of Playa del Rincón de la Victoria take about five minutes to reach on foot. There are also caves to explore fifteen minutes' walk from the home, while the centre of Málaga is only twenty minutes away in the car.

Located on a narrow street in the historic town of Alhaurín el Grande, close to the green slopes of Sierra de Mijas, you'll find this spectacular villa. 

Even the entrance to this home is awe-inspiring. Adorned with blue and white tiles, hand-painted by the lost artisans of Seville, this hallway gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "if walls could talk." You'll also find an original stone motif and lattice, dating all the way back to 1882. This home seamlessly blends historic features with modern-day living to create a space that's not only inviting but has an incredible sense of whimsy.

The blue and white theme is present throughout the home, adding pretty pops of colour that contrast beautifully with the terracotta brickwork and patio. Speaking of the patio, this area is most definitely the beating heart of this home, boasting multiple levels containing shady nooks to relax in, a dining table for alfresco feasts and a swimming pool complete with a trickling water feature. 

Spend your days sipping coffee on the outdoor sofa, cooling off in the pool or tucking into brunch in the sunshine. When you fancy a change of scene, head into town to sample an array of international cuisines, pick up a few treats at the local bakery or have a wander around the 18th-century churches and chapels.

If you're not up for cooking, you'll have plenty of restaurants to choose from just a car journey away, and you're only a few minutes' walk from the beach when you want to feel the gold sands between your toes. You'll also find watersports and beach volleyball here if you're looking for ways to keep the kids entertained.

This stunning Andalusian villa is the perfect getaway for a holiday with your loved ones. The interior of the home is very nicely designed, but it’s the exterior we’re most enthusiastic about. With an infinity pool, ping-pong table and several lovely terraces (including a rooftop one) we don’t blame you if you’d like to spend all your time here. After a quick lunch, pack your seaside essentials and take the five-minute drive to Playa Granada for a fun-filled day of sand, sea and surf. Having worked up an appetite, we recommend you head into the lively town of Motril for a bite to eat, less than ten minutes away by car.

Just a stone's throw away from El Higueron Beach, this conveniently located apartment puts you within proximity of the town centre's shops and restaurants too. Yet, the views alone make the apartment truly stand out. The panorama at sunset is particularly memorable, so why not barbecue in the evenings and gather around the alfresco dining area? Up on the communal rooftop, you'll also have access to a unique swimming pool and sun terrace shared with other guests on-site. With air conditioning, you can take advantage of sleeping in comfortable temperatures during the summer. However, it's worth bearing in mind at full capacity, two members of the group will be sleeping on the double sofa bed in the living area.

When you're in the mood for a bit more action, walk ten minutes to Playa de Burriana and sprawl out in the sand. Nerja is a lively town on the Costa del Sol, yet it retains a lot of charm despite the buzzing atmosphere. There's a market held every Tuesday, plus a myriad of delicious eateries serving up classic Spanish cuisine. The gorgeous Balcón de Europa is a can't-miss – lined with swaying palm trees and built on the foundations of an old fort, the panoramic views from this lookout are absolutely incredible. With boutiques, bars and beaches aplenty, there'll never be a dull day in paradise.
