The patio was the first thing that caught our eye – with its barbecue, it's perfect for alfresco meals in the shade. At capacity, two guests will be using the living area's sofa bed, so space might be a little tight. Luckily, Loulé offers plenty of reasons to be out exploring, and you can take a bus directly to the coast in less than an hour.

When it comes to soaking up the sunshine, the Algarve never disappoints – and, it has to be said, neither does this home. Upstairs, a balcony with lounge chairs is an ideal spot to savour a cocktail. If the weather isn't up to its usual standards, the indoor patio makes a nice escape – we're big fans of the hand-painted tiles and skylight. Another thing we enjoy is the location. You're about ten minutes from Vilamoura's buzzing marina and beaches, with easy access to the rest of the coastline when you fancy adventures further afield.

You’ll find this eighteenth-century Pombaline residence standing proud along the water’s edge of the charming fishing town of Vila Real de Santo António in the Algarve.

With its impossible-to-miss red façade, lofty frescoed ceilings, and mosaic-tiled floors, this is the Portuguese retreat you have dreamed about. But we doubt you’d imagined an achingly cool shared swimming pool high on the rooftop with breathtaking views of the mighty Guadiana River. Neither did we.

Back downstairs in the apartment, while the historic splendour remains, mid-century-inspired wooden furniture dials down the ornate features beautifully –⁠ and a luxurious bathroom and smart kitchen bring everything firmly into the twenty-first century.
