If you want to stay in a prestigious neighbourhood, how about this home in Salamanca? There are plenty of designer boutiques, art galleries and fine-dining restaurants to explore in the area. Naturally, you will hear some city noise here. This south-facing apartment is light and bright, and we love the Juliet balcony off the open-plan living room with its leafy Ayala Street views. There’s not much food preparation space in the kitchen, but that said, it’s well-equipped, and you can always let your host arrange for a private chef to cook some authentic tapas dishes.

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

We loved the industrial-chic interiors – it’s all poured concrete floors, exposed brick walls and reclaimed timber beams. Kick back on the royal blue sofa or slink off for a siesta in the quiet bedrooms as the appointed chef of your group whips up Spanish delicacies for lunch. 

After the plates are cleared, plan your itinerary at the dining table. We recommend starting with the Royal Palace, a mere ten-minute walk from your doorstep. If you’d like to stretch your legs a little further, it’s a thirty-minute stroll to El Retiro Park. Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.

Malasaña is famous for being slightly outrageous, which is probably why Queen of the Castle is in it. A tour of this home reveals a glamorous hybrid design theme that balances modern baroque-inspired pieces with jungle and safari themes – dear lovers of minimalism, you might want to stay elsewhere. When all of that exploring works up a hunger, check out your neighbourhood’s impressive culinary scene. Ten minutes from the alfresco drinking spots of Plaza Mayor, and just over fifteen from the lush greenery of the Parque de El Retiro, this apartment is a wonderful base in Madrid. Despite being so close to main attractions and located among the most vibrant streets, it’s a space where you can relax. This apartment is classy, colourful, and comfortable. The host has taken it upon themself to create a peaceful oasis in the middle of the city, curating an eclectic look with antiques and flea-market finds. We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

Perfect for two friends or two couples sharing, this pocket-sized pad makes an ideal base for exploring Madrid's cultural hotspots. It's situated near the Triangle of the Art, within walking distance of countless museums, theatres, and performing arts centres. Easy access to Delicias metro stop and Atocha Station makes zipping to and from the centre a breeze – just be sure to pack earplugs, since you'll be right in the hustle and bustle here.

Seeking a stylish base in Madrid? This apartment is just the ticket. You'll find it near Chamberí, only a short walk from the metro connecting you to the best of the city. From shopping on Gran Vía to dining in nearby restaurants, there is plenty to see and do here. Neither the kitchen nor some of the bedrooms are the biggest, but it has all the essentials for a hassle-free stay. Just note that though there's space for five, we think it's a better fit for four.

What a fabulous location this refurbished apartment has – Puerta del Sol, one of the best-known squares in the city, is just a two-minute stroll away. Or, a five-minute walk will take you to one of Madrid's most famous streets, Gran Vía. Watch a production at the Teatro EDP Gran Vía or have lunch at one of its many eateries. Alternatively, the iconic Plaza del Dos de Mayo is a fifteen-minute wander. Here, you'll find plenty of bars, as well as a lively weekend market for fresh produce.
