This remarkable home dates back to the late 19th century but a quick tour will quickly show you that there have been a number of changes made in the ensuing years. For starters, the large swimming pool is a relatively recent addition – and a welcome one, at that – as is the huge Jacuzzi in its own separate annexe. There's a contemporary sleekness to the kitchen and bathrooms in the main house, as well.

That being said, a certain sense of heritage has been expertly retained during the recent refurbishment and there's an undeniable character in the exposed stonework, wooden ceiling beams and the elegant staircase that takes you up to the bedrooms. The tall verandah complete with a barbecue, alfresco dining table and views of the Andalusian countryside through the archways is an impressive feature, too.

The view from the large, private terrace of this Benalmadena apartment shows off just how close you are to the town’s soft-sanded beach. It’s just across the road, and all along the seafront you’ll find Benalmadena’s main attractions – dolphin tours, the huge marina and myriad bars and restaurants. Kids will love the waterpark in Torremolinos and the sandy beaches in Málaga and Fuengirola, and for golf enthusiasts, the nearest course is just 1 kilometre away. The home itself is well set up for family life with an open-plan living area leading directly to the poolside, making it easy to keep an eye on little ones. Add to that a barbeque, alfresco dining area, and private parking space and you’ve got all the ingredients for a fuss-free getaway.

Even the entrance to this home is awe-inspiring. Adorned with blue and white tiles, hand-painted by the lost artisans of Seville, this hallway gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "if walls could talk." You'll also find an original stone motif and lattice, dating all the way back to 1882. This home seamlessly blends historic features with modern-day living to create a space that's not only inviting but has an incredible sense of whimsy.

The blue and white theme is present throughout the home, adding pretty pops of colour that contrast beautifully with the terracotta brickwork and patio. Speaking of the patio, this area is most definitely the beating heart of this home, boasting multiple levels containing shady nooks to relax in, a dining table for alfresco feasts and a swimming pool complete with a trickling water feature.
