A short drive away, the quaint village of Almáchar is known for its culinary contribution to the local culture. Not only is it known for its currants, but the village is also the home of Andalusian favourite, ajoblanco - a cold soup made from bread, garlic and almonds. In fact, a festival is held in its honour each September. Should you wish to sample this local delicacy, a quick wander of its winding whitewashed streets will unearth several family-run restaurants. 

However, between the well-equipped kitchen and the built-in barbecue, there's not much call to leave this idyllic spot, so you might want to stock up on essentials at the supermarkets in Vélez-Málaga before you arrive.

Set in the dramatic mountainous landscape of the Malaga countryside, this unique home has all the ingredients for an unforgettable holiday. Set on 6,500 square metres of land, the home comprises three separate houses built together in a small complex. Each of the houses has a living room and a fully equipped kitchen, so you can make your coffee and breakfast without fighting over countertop space. 

Long summer days can be spent in the garden, soaking up the panoramic views of the green hills and golden mountains. When it gets hot, cool off with a dip in the 15 metre pool. Come lunchtime, fire up the barbecue and enjoy an alfresco meal together on the terrace. The villa is in a peaceful, remote location, and the nearest town is Rincón de la Victoria, 8.7 kilometres away, where there’s pharmacies and supermarkets, as well as restaurants and bars.

You could easily spend all your time relaxing at the villa and splashing around in the pool, but if you feel like an adventure, Malaga is 19 kilometres away and easily reachable by car. Wander around and admire the old colonial architecture and pretty squares, stopping in for a drink and a bite to eat at one of the family run tapas bars. Or spend the afternoon at one of Malaga’s beautiful sandy beaches, enjoying a paella at a seafront restaurant. After a day of sun, sea and sand, head home for cocktails on the terrace as the mountains turn pink.

High in the Andalusian hills, this home boasts fantastic views across the mountains. Access is via a dirt road, so a car is a must, but the secluded area and rural scenery make the steep, winding trek worth it. The one downside of this location is the lack of a nearby beach – you'd have to drive about 45 kilometres to reach the coast – but a private pool will do the job when you fancy a dip. The design is a bit more rustic than we'd like, but it's roomy inside and out. That said, as there are just two bathrooms between all ten guests and only room for six around the dining tables, we suggest a lower occupancy here.

Perched just above the Andalusian coastline, this southeast-facing villa is the perfect base for a sun-kissed vacation in the south of Spain. 

Inside, traditional Balearic features, such as the terracotta tiling and open-hearth fireplace, combine effortlessly with pops of colour to create a chic and enchanting space. We're particularly fond of the sleek minimalist kitchen and bold prints found throughout the rooms.

Take a look outside and it's not hard to imagine yourself by the saltwater pool with your favourite book in hand, or tending to the barbecue once the sun's gone down. The whitewashed walls are traditional in style and lend a sense of privacy, but peek over the top and you'll see the Mediterranean Sea stretching into the distance.

As you can probably guess from this view, the beach isn't too far away — in fact, the golden sands of Playa del Rincón de la Victoria take about five minutes to reach on foot. There are also caves to explore fifteen minutes' walk from the home, while the centre of Málaga is only twenty minutes away in the car.

You’re practically at cloud height, up at this glorious hilltop location. The Andalucian hills unfurl before you like a map, and each element of this home has been designed to make the most of that stunning panorama. The rustic stone patio is crowned with a deep blue swimming pool, gazing out over the mountains speckled with sugarcube towns. Fire up the Green Egg barbecue for an alfresco feast in the fresh mountain air, or head inside to the dining room with its picture-frame window looking out over the view.

The kitchen has a charming farmhouse feel to wooden cabinets and terracotta floors, and your host can arrange a private chef as an extra if you want to take it easy. Only a five-minute stroll to the sea – so close, you can just glimpse it from the balcony – this apartment's breezy, open-plan feel makes it a great base for exploring Rincón de la Victoria. Although this flat has a very sleek, contemporary design, it still has plenty of soul – we particularly love the traditional patterned kitchen tiles, vivid pops of colour on the cushy throw pillows and the bright, light-filled living space. Our favourite spot is the sun-kissed balcony. It's where you can start your day off with coffee while watching the neighbourhood wake up and end your evening with a glass of sangria as the tantalising sun goes down beyond the apartment block.

When you fancy exploring, the village has multiple attractions nearby, including golf and shopping, as well as a long sandy beach ideal for sprawling underneath clear blue skies. Hire bikes and go adventuring along the lively seafront with its array of bars and restaurants or, for a bit more buzz, make the twenty-five-minute drive to Málaga – we think it's perfect for a day trip.

The town itself is nestled between the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Mediterranean sea, offering easy access to both. Much like the home, the town wears its Moorish influence on its sleeve and it's well worth spending an afternoon strolling through the old town and taking in the architecture. With the Spanish sun high in the sky, why not gather the family together and head to the beach in nearby Torre del Mar? Alternatively, witness the unstoppable resurgence of Málaga a little over half an hour away.
