Being located in such a rural area means you have plenty of hiking opportunities within a short distance. We recommend the thirty-minute drive to Caminito del Rey. It's a beautiful walkway pinned along the steep walls of a narrow gorge in El Chorro. Admission is cheap and well worth it for amazing photo opportunities. After your day out hiking, you'll look forward to returning home to a place packed with as much character on the inside as the landscape outside. Look a little closer and you'll be able to tell from the tiled kitchen, sleek bathrooms and stylish furnishings that the property underwent a recent refurbishment. The outdoor area is as far from back-to-basics as you could imagine, as well. Not only is there an invitingly blue swimming pool surrounded by loungers that wouldn't look out of place on a Balaeric island, but there's a pergola at the edge of the home's grounds that treats guests to sweeping views of the local countryside.

You just might find that this panorama inspires you to head out and explore this corner of southern Spain. The Natural Park of the Torcal of Antequera takes about half an hour to reach in the car, as does the historic city that lends the park its name. In the other direction, the art galleries and seaside spots of Malaga can be reached in just under an hour in the car.

This is one of those incredible villas at which it's hard to know what to be impressed by most. For starters, it won't escape your attention that the peaceful location in the Andalusian countryside is nothing short of beautiful – it makes for quite the backdrop for the wonderful outside space, which includes everything from an invitingly blue swimming pool, a stone barbecue offered shade by ancient trees, and plenty of alfresco dining spots from which to drink in the scenery.

There's a lot to like behind the home's walls. The design manages to nail the oft-difficult job of retaining traditional features while adding contemporary touches, such as the glass walls and sleek blue kitchen surfaces. We love the cosy fireplace in the living room and the sunroom, but we'd be lying if we didn't say that the master bedroom is the stand-out space – not only is it treated to a private balcony and a kitchenette, but there's also a sauna in the bathroom.

It's fair to say the home sits in a secluded location and you have to venture a little bit to reach some attractions. The nearest village – Villanueva del Rosario – is 7km away and has a couple of shops and restaurants. If it's bigger cities you're after, Malaga is 44 km away, so well within range for a day of gallery-hopping and relaxing on the beach.

You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to the nearest amenities, while Málaga and the nearest beaches are also within easy reach.

While we love the bohemian flairs dotted about the home and the little balcony to soak up the local bustle, it’s worth noting everything about this studio apartment is pocket-sized. The fold-down double sofa bed won’t suit everyone, and the kitchen is compact, so it won't suit anyone wanting to flex their culinary skills. When you’re ready to hit the road to explore Malaga’s nearby hotspots, the free garage parking with space for a trailer, caravan or motorhome will come in handy.

Gateway to Málaga

You're well-placed to discover Andalusia's best bits from this studio apartment set in Casabermeja – fondly known as the gateway to Malaga. While there's plenty to explore in this inland town on foot, the home's private garage parking will be handy when it's time for a road trip. To say this home is pocket-sized is an understatement. You'll all be bunking in together on two sofa beds and a mezzanine level for the final two guests. It's also worth noting there's no oven in the small kitchenette. But with traditional restaurants, bakeries and streetside tapas bars all within walking distance, we don't think you'll mind.

Mountains and in the other, it’s a leisurely walk to Nerja’s beachfront. Simplicity is the watchword, inside and out. Take a look outside and it's not hard to imagine yourself by the saltwater pool with your favourite book in hand, or tending to the barbecue once the sun's gone down. The whitewashed walls are traditional in style and lend a sense of privacy, but peek over the top and you'll see the Mediterranean Sea stretching into the distance.

As you can probably guess from this view, the beach isn't too far away — in fact, the golden sands of Playa del Rincón de la Victoria take about five minutes to reach on foot. There are also caves to explore fifteen minutes' walk from the home, while the centre of Málaga is only twenty minutes away in the car.

This light-filled apartment is contemporary to a tee. It's a squeeze for all six guests since two will sleep on the sofa bed, but there's a lot to like despite the smaller size.
