In one direction, you’ve got the meandering trails of the Sierras de Tejeda
Mountains and in the other, it’s a leisurely walk to Nerja’s beachfront. Simplicity is the watchword, inside and out. The backyard is dominated by a shimmering swimming pool – as it should be in the southern Spanish heat. The gorgeous Balcón de Europa is a can't-miss – lined with swaying palm trees and built on the foundations of an old fort, the panoramic views from this lookout are absolutely incredible. With boutiques, bars and beaches aplenty, there'll never be a dull day in paradise.

There’s no doubt this is one of Nerja’s most impressive sea-grazing apartments. On the edge of Nerja, where the beachy resort town ends and the wild mountains of Andalucia begin, you’ll find this apartment. It sits in a charming complex of red-roofed villas and apartments reminiscent of Andalucia’s shambling mountain villages. Plus, there’s a huge shared swimming pool, kids’ play area and shops and restaurants onsite.

What we love most about this apartment has to be the view from the private terrace. From the shaded dining table, you’ve got a fabulous panorama over the rooftops of Nerja to the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. There’s also a rattan set of sofa and chairs out here, perfect for a sundowner or two. Inside, it feels like an homage to traditional southern Spain with a cooling tiled floor, crisp white walls and an old, decorative fireplace in the living room. A brick archway separates the living and dining room from the full kitchen. Those that bag the main bedroom can enjoy direct access to the terrace.

Three levels of comfort await at this home in the heart of Nerja. It won't suit guests who struggle with stairs, but it's bound to be a hit for those who don't mind multi-floor living. Head up to the top-floor terrace to take advantage of the private plunge pool and alfresco dining area. We're big fans of the second kitchen on this level, which makes it easy to whip up a meal without having to clamber up and down. A few of the bedrooms are on the smaller side – and they're all on the first floor – but two have desks for remote working. Location-wise, Playa Burriana and the ever-popular Balcón De Europa are just twenty minutes away on foot.

In this hilly residential district, sea views are of course as readily available as the coast. However, the VIP vibe of this neighbourhood would hardly feel out of place in the Hollywood Hills. Our favourite thing about this place is the separate terraces, so you can come together outdoors or slip away for a moment of solitude during your downtime. We love the earthy, boho vibe of this Nerja home, but the real selling point is definitely the outside space. You’ll definitely be able to work on your tan here. The nearest sandy beach is 800 metres away, so if you tire of the swimming pool you don’t have to travel far for a dip.

With its Mediterranean Sea views and private balcony, this apartment is the ideal place to crash between dips in the communal pool and tapas-tasting in the heart of Nerja. The private balcony is equipped with an awning (a welcome addition for when the sun becomes a bit much) and you’re only 200 metres or so from Playa Torrecilla. If you’d like to make your stay that little bit more special, your host provides a bottle of champagne as an optional add-on.

This delightful home combines beautiful sea and mountain views with luxury and comfort. The private pool is surrounded by sunbeds, and there’s a rooftop terrace set up with comfortable furniture – you can really relax here. When you’re not lounging by the pool or cooking on the barbecue, you might drive 2.5 kilometres to Burriana Beach. Inside the villa, you’ll have plenty of room to chill out together, though two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in one of the two living rooms.

A five-minute drive from Nerja’s centre, this villa will appeal to traditionalists. It’s a classic Spanish-style home in a residential area so it won’t appeal to everyone, but we think it’s got charm in abundance. Only two of the bedrooms have sea views, so you and your guests will have to fight it out, but there’s plenty of outside space for everyone to enjoy – gourmands will enjoy the outdoor kitchen. There’s a bakery and mini market within walking distance, but hiring a car to see more of the area would be a good idea.

And there are sea views from both villa and annexe, so no need to squabble over rooms. The traditional Spanish village of Frigiliana is nearby, so you can have your fill of tasty tapas and be home to stargaze from the garden in five minutes. The sandy beaches of Nerja are seven minutes down the road. 


Sun Ripened

We never underestimate the power of a killer view. Which is precisely why this blissfully secluded Finca perched high in the valley above the coast of Nerja caught our eye.

Perfectly designed for alfresco living, the vast south-facing terrace is the spot to drink up those sea and mountain vistas (preferably with a glass of something chilled in hand). As is that cool, blue pool with an outdoor shower to beat the heat. And just imagine this place at sunset as you fire up the barbecue – that’s a memory made right there.

Inside, while the interiors aren’t winning any design gongs soon, everywhere feels beautifully cared for and charming. Cool, terracotta floors and exposed stonework bring the character, while the bedrooms feel blissfully quiet with no traffic noise to disturb your beauty sleep here.

If you can tear yourself away from the panoramic scenes outside, you’ll find you’re closer to the action than you think. The nearest village, Frigiliana (a ten-minute drive), is an afternoon well spent with its tapas bars tucked away in the Moorish old quarter. When it's time to soak up the local culture, you're in the right place. Get off to a flying start in nearby Nerja (a five-kilometre drive) – the cobbled streets of the old town dotted with shops and tapas bars is a morning well spent. Then hit the waves for the afternoon – the sandy shores of Playa de Vilches (a five-minute drive) are a fine place to start.
