Just a ten-minute walk from the beach, you won't have to travel far to discover the sandy shores, delicious restaurants and lively tapas bars in this area. And with a communal pool and private terrace back at home, there are plenty of spots to soak up the endless sunshine. Speaking of home, we love how sleek and bright this apartment is. Rattan furniture, woven rugs and leafy plants add a bit of bohemian flair, but all the mod-cons are accounted for, too – from the rain shower in the master and a glossy kitchen stocked with crockery to Netflix on the flatscreen. The whole flat revolves around the gorgeous terrace and its panoramic views of the Sierra Tejeda (forty minutes by car if you're in the mood for a hike). In the evenings, sip Spanish vino as the sun goes down and feast under the stars at the alfresco dining area. Trust us — you won't find a better spot to watch the night roll in.

This apartment sits in a gated community at the heart of Axarquia. It’s in the first line from the beach, so you can admire sea views and stroll to the soft sand in no time. There are also plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. You’ll have access to the communal salt-water swimming pool, from which you can gaze out to sea as you float in the sunshine. There’s a communal gym, too, ideal for those keen to keep up their routine. We recommend bringing a car so you can drive twenty-five minutes to Malaga to see the sights.

Head to the shared tennis courts to admire the arched architecture – they’re worth visiting even if tennis isn’t your forte. As evening comes around, cook up a smoky tapas feast on the barbecue for your loved ones and make the most of the stunning scenery.

When you head inside, you won't be disappointed. The open layout makes the interior feel bright and expansive, while there's an eclectic array of original features dotted about the place that adds a good dose of authentic character. With exposed stone walls, terracotta floor tiles and elegant wooden furniture, your hosts have designed a welcoming space that's in keeping with its spectacular rural surroundings. 

The grounds are the real highlight and have been designed to make the most of the enviable Mediterranean climate and breathtaking views. A spacious terrace comes equipped with a private pool surrounded by sun loungers and there are a couple of shaded seating areas on hand to shelter you from the glare of the midday sun. Finally, there's a built-in brick oven for cooking your food over fire.

Given the location, you're looking at a minimum of a forty-minute drive to reach the authentic Andalusian town of Vélez-Málaga, or the charming former fishing village of Nerja. So we say stock up on essentials, embrace the solitude and enjoy a week or two to completely disconnect – you'd be surprised how exhausting doing nothing can be.

This home is a great option for families and groups seeking an easy-going coastal escape. From here, it’s just a short stroll to the nearest beach with the centre of Almayate just 2 kilometres away. The rooms are basic yet comfortable, and there’s plenty of outdoor space with two terraces and a private pool – perfect for refreshing afternoon swims. Your host can also help organise child-friendly amenities, plus there's a sofa bed for two extra guests. 

A Sanctuary by the Sea

Only a five-minute stroll to the sea – so close, you can just glimpse it from the balcony – this apartment's breezy, open-plan feel makes it a great base for exploring Rincón de la Victoria. Although this flat has a very sleek, contemporary design, it still has plenty of soul – we particularly love the traditional patterned kitchen tiles, vivid pops of colour on the cushy throw pillows and the bright, light-filled living space. Our favourite spot is the sun-kissed balcony. It's where you can start your day off with coffee while watching the neighbourhood wake up and end your evening with a glass of sangria as the tantalising sun goes down beyond the apartment block.

When you fancy exploring, the village has multiple attractions nearby, including golf and shopping, as well as a long sandy beach ideal for sprawling underneath clear blue skies. Hire bikes and go adventuring along the lively seafront with its array of bars and restaurants or, for a bit more buzz, make the twenty-five-minute drive to Málaga – we think it's perfect for a day trip.

Got Soul

Situated in Velez-Malaga, Andalusia, this pretty home is spread over four levels with its own private pool and games room. The first-floor terrace offers lovely views over the Mediterranean sea, while the basement level grants access to the pool. Guests with reduced mobility should keep this in mind, as only part of the outdoor space is accessible from the ground floor. We recommend hiring a car here, for spending a day at the nearby pebble beaches of Lagos and Mezquitilla.

Spanish Love

This villa is just over a kilometre from the beach, so it's a great base for exploring the Costa del Sol. Alongside easy access to the sea, you'll be well-placed to visit Nerja, Málaga, and the many postcard-perfect villages dotted around this region. Although this home is part of a complex with a communal leisure area, you won't have to share the sunny garden or the private pool. Sipping sangria on the patio will be second nature – and firing up the barbecue for dinner is a must. Children will also enjoy playing table football in the second-floor lounge, which boasts a lovely terrace to boot. Despite the fuss-free design, we think it's a practical option for family holidays.

Although this villa is only ten minutes' drive from the Malagan coastline, the green hillsides that surround the address and the sense of seclusion make it feel a lot further inland. 

As such, it's remarkably easy to relax here, especially in the outdoor area complete with a swimming pool and a Balinese bed that overlooks the glistening water. As well as that, there's also a large stone barbecue and a table on the verandah, both ready and waiting for long summer evening dinners.

Although the Andalusian climate means that you'll inevitably try and spend as much time outside as possible, the home's interior is sure to impress when you finally get around to heading inside. There's definitely a traditional feel to the design, with terracotta tiles underfoot, wooden finishes and whitewashed walls. The double-aspect glass doors in the living space are also particularly generous when it comes to natural light, too.

When it comes to seeing a little more of the local area, there's a great choice of small towns and villages that lie a short drive away from the home, including Algarrobo ten minutes' drive away. There are larger cities within easy reach too, such as Malaga itself only forty minutes away by car.

The main reason for this is the way that the hosts find a balance between retaining period features with adding more contemporary amenities. Behind the home's whitewashed walls, you'll see wooden ceiling beams and a traditional fireplace, but also a modern kitchen and equally glossy bathrooms.
