Twenty minutes on foot from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and El Retiro Park, this apartment is well-placed to explore. Many shops, restaurants, and metro stations are nearby, as well as some of Madrid's most famous markets. When you're not sightseeing, this central home is practical and comfortable. We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.

Although the apartment isn't especially large, the owners have made excellent use of the space. The spotlessly clean and dynamic living room is dotted with stylish – but not overbearing – design pieces, and the mirror in the kitchen makes it feel dramatically more spacious. And, with an exceptionally fast wifi speed, a brand new air-conditioning unit, and five individual balconies (yes, really!) facing onto sunny Cadiz street, it's easy to see why guests keep coming back.

Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

Located in one of Madrid's most charming neighbourhoods, the Barrio de las Letras –  step outside and you'll discover terrific restaurants, trendy bars, and little boutiques. It is noisy, but you're in the heart of the action here. Wander over to El Retiro Park, perfect for getting away from the city with a picnic in the park, and a stroll around the art in the 19th Century Crystal Palace. Chueca, famous for its active nightlife and wonderful vintage tapas bars, is a great place to experience Spanish nightlife. Most importantly, before hitting the bars, seek out a quaint restaurant for delightful tapas. This is all achievable due to the transport links that you can easily tour the entire city with.

The bedrooms are spacious and cheerful, thanks to large windows that let in plenty of natural light. The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

It's not for everyone, but with luxurious touches and natural light, it's best suited for urban explorers seeking comfort after a long day.

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.

Step out the front door and you'll be straight into the city's hustle and bustle – buzzing Gran Vía is two minutes on foot, with Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor walkable in under ten. Whether you fancy sightseeing, shopping or sampling the local cuisine, this is the place to be, with restaurants, boutiques and all the landmarks within easy. 

When you're not taking advantage of this super-central locale, relax back at home with a glass of Spanish vino. Hues of bold yellow, crisp white and sleek black give this chic pad a pop of personality – a perfect reflection of the dazzling modern art piece hanging proudly on the living room wall. Elsewhere, clever Japanese-style doors make the most of the natural light, so although the rooms are a bit small, they're all quite stylish. We're not going to lie – the kitchen, in particular, is pretty compact, but with Madrid's many eateries on your doorstep, we doubt you'll do much cooking.

You’ll hit the bullseye in this cool modern apartment, bang in the centre of Madrid's hip and happening Embajadores area. A bright space with tastefully exposed brickwork and an American-style kitchen, you’ll find plenty here to make yourself feel at home. Sip a coffee on the iron balcony railings looking out at the street below, or start the day slowly by kicking back on the white leather sofa with a book in hand. The sizeable bedroom is well-lit, the bathroom fully provisioned and pleasantly decorated with marble-look tiles, and there’s even a designated workspace for those travelling on business. This apartment is located on iconic Sevilla Street, right in the heart of Madrid. You’ve got all the city’s must-sees, including Museo del Prado, Palacio Real, and Plaza Mayor, on your doorstep. And if you want to venture further afield, Sevilla metro station is at the end of the road. Most of the windows in the home are skylights so you won’t get much of a view from here, but the open-plan living space has everything you’ll need, including a handy breakfast bar and comfortable lounge area. The second bedroom is very cosy – we think it’s best suited to a child or someone travelling light.

This fabulous three-bedroom apartment is stylishly decorated throughout and brimming with character. The open-plan living room has lovely high ceilings, beautiful period windows, and a bright and airy feel. The bedrooms might not be the largest bedrooms we've ever seen, but they all have a lovely, calming feel and do the job just fine. We also love all the original paintings  throughout the home - this host has style!

Bright and thoughtfully designed, this charming apartment borders the luscious gardens of Real Jardín Botánico and is moments away from Caixa Forum’s vertical growing wall and suspended architecture. This elegant home provides an idyllic base for a family or group of friends seeking a calm retreat with cultural hotspots on the doorstep.

We knew that, if the towering wooden front door with pretty cast iron rosettes was anything to go by, this home would be hiding away some pretty impressive features. From the elegant archway to the hand-painted floral panels, the sweet antique toy horse to the immaculately-tiled kitchen – it's a real gem. There’s a tranquil ambience here, which invites you to wind down in the cosy living space whilst the central dining table insists on a homemade tapas spread for a memorable night with your loved ones. 

The surrounding streets are packed with a host of options. Mornings can be best spent altogether walking around El Retiro Park, just a twelve-minute walk away. The exposed wooden beams and the older-looking elements help create a special kind of charm that's hard to find in Madrid these days. The Open Library might also have one of the finest kitchens we've seen, equipped with enough dishes space to cook for a small army. The fact that it's also located within walking distance from the Prado and Puerta del sol makes this home a great, relaxed stay.

You’ll be just a short walk from the sights of the city centre, too. We love the apartment’s full-length windows, which add to the home’s bright and breezy vibe. It’s equipped with everything you might need for a city break, including a handy workstation for those in town for business or study.
