The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

We think it's best for couples or solo travellers, though a sofa bed could sleep an additional guest if needed. Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.

Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

You’ll hit the bullseye in this cool modern apartment, bang in the centre of Madrid's hip and happening Embajadores area. A bright space with tastefully exposed brickwork and an American-style kitchen, you’ll find plenty here to make yourself feel at home. Sip a coffee on the iron balcony railings looking out at the street below, or start the day slowly by kicking back on the white leather sofa with a book in hand. The sizeable bedroom is well-lit, the bathroom fully provisioned and pleasantly decorated with marble-look tiles, and there’s even a designated workspace for those travelling on business.
