Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.

A stylish blend of rustic and modern, this characterful apartment just a three-minute stroll from Puerta del Sol puts you in a prime position to explore Madrid’s cultural and historic centre. 
 
Inside, exposed beam ceilings, wood floors and colourful decor set a welcoming scene in the open-plan living area. We love the funky art prints decking the walls and the large windows giving way to leafy views. The dining table is perfectly set up here to catch the rays pouring through the glass, over a hearty breakfast before a day of sightseeing, or over a bottle of Spanish red for a celebratory evening meal.
 
The pared-back bedroom is a comfortable space you’ll have no trouble falling asleep in, and in the morning, the bathroom’s rainfall shower is sure to get your day off on the right.

This home is far from a pristine condition, but we're sure you can spot the wear and tear from the photos. The exposed wooden beams and the older-looking elements help create a special kind of charm that's hard to find in Madrid these days. The Open Library might also have one of the finest kitchens we've seen, equipped with enough dishes space to cook for a small army. The fact that it's also located within walking distance from the Prado and Puerta del sol makes this home a great, relaxed stay.

The spotlessly clean and dynamic living room is dotted with stylish – but not overbearing – design pieces, and the mirror in the kitchen makes it feel dramatically more spacious. And, with an exceptionally fast wifi speed, a brand new air-conditioning unit, and five individual balconies (yes, really!) facing onto sunny Cadiz street, it's easy to see why guests keep coming back.

Modern, bright and centrally located close to Madrid’s top sights, this home right by Puerta del Sol is a sunny delight. 

With its blue and white colour scheme, exposed brick details and open-plan layout, it embodies city living in chic, cool style. Open up the bedroom’s French doors to look out over the city from the Juliet balcony first thing in the morning before ambling into the living room where another pair of Juliet balconies await. This is a big and cleverly laid-out home that impressed us with how quiet it was – in spite of the fact that it's in the strictest centre of Madrid. Both Puerta del Sol and the Prado are within walking distance, setting you up for great sightseeing walks. Corinthian gives the impression of old-timey grandeur. It's not a scratch-free home, but one that feels lived in and furnished with a personality. The high ceiling and use of wood in almost every room give it a warm and welcoming vibe.

It can be difficult to find accommodation suited to larger groups in the heart of the city, but this smart apartment will tick all the boxes. With plenty of space and flexible sleeping options, this central home is the perfect place to spend some quality time with your guests between your sightseeing excursions. 

You'll love the spacious living area, with double-height ceilings and huge windows that flood the space with natural light. The bike sculptures and selection of houseplants add some quirkiness, while the open-plan layout is perfect for socialising. Uncork a bottle of delicious Spanish wine, and put together some tasty tapas dishes to share at the stylish dining bench. Located right in the centre of Madrid within walking distance of its cultural treasures, this apartment is its own gallery of miscellaneous wonders perched high above the pavements. Starting from the fuzzy caterpillar-like chaise lounge in the living room that sets the eclectic glamorous tone, this home puts just about everything in the mix, from boldly patterned wallpaper and towering palm plants to the Asian dresser in the living area and the bright blue countertop. It's fair to say that we loved it. A small balcony in one of the bedrooms was the cherry on the cake and is perfect for when you want a blast of fresh air on a stuffy afternoon. If you want to head out exploring, Museo Nacional del Prado is just over ten minutes' walk away, while Palacio de Cristal in the middle of Parque de el Retiro takes around twenty-five.

We also love all the original paintings  throughout the home - this host has style!

Whether you fancy sightseeing, shopping or sampling the local cuisine, this is the place to be, with restaurants, boutiques and all the landmarks within easy. 

When you're not taking advantage of this super-central locale, relax back at home with a glass of Spanish vino. Hues of bold yellow, crisp white and sleek black give this chic pad a pop of personality – a perfect reflection of the dazzling modern art piece hanging proudly on the living room wall. Elsewhere, clever Japanese-style doors make the most of the natural light, so although the rooms are a bit small, they're all quite stylish.
