Many shops, restaurants, and metro stations are nearby, as well as some of Madrid's most famous markets. When you're not sightseeing, this central home is practical and comfortable. We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.

We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

It’s not in pristine condition, as evidenced by the marks on the walls, but that’s an aesthetic consideration, and doesn’t make the home any less comfortable. The metro station in Lavapiés is close to the flat, and while the square outside is a little rough around the edges, there are several lively bars and restaurants.

In the heart of Madrid, just a few metres away from Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of Puerta del Sol, this city apartment couldn't be better located. Keep in mind that some noise should be expected here, but we think it's a small price to pay for this central spot. You'll find a great selection of restaurants on your doorstep if you'd like to sample the local cuisine, but if you'd prefer to dine in, the kitchen is well-equipped for homemade tapas.

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

This bright and welcoming apartment is a comfortable and quiet oasis in the heart of Lavapiés, one of Madrid’s best-loved neighbourhoods. From this convenient base, you’re within easy reach of designer shops, bars, markets and theatres, in addition to some of the city’s most popular tourist spots – Plaza Mayor is only a fifteen-minute walk. Lavapiés metro station is also a short walk away. Ideal for those working during their stay, there are two desks at this home. 


My Way

Tucked away in the heart of the La Latina neighbourhood, this contemporary home is an ideal base for friends or family on a Madrid getaway. Sure, as a party of five, one person will sleep on the sofa bed in the living room, but it’s a small price to pay for this home’s location. Location is all important for city breaks, and this apartment has a winning location. It’s in the heart of La Latina, one of the most traditional neighbourhoods in Madrid. You’ll be just a short stroll from Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor and will have your pick of bars, restaurants, and cafes nearby. This comes in particularly handy because there’s not a huge amount of space for socialising in the apartment – but you’ll find everything you need for a comfortable place to rest your head. 

La Latina's Heart

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.


Windcomb

Located in the heart of La Latina, a traditional neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid, you'll be just a few meters from Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol with this home as your base. With an open-plan kitchen and living area, plus a private courtyard terrace, it's easy to chill out between excursions here. While this home features stylish and contemporary designs, it lacks natural daylight – so it is best suited to those who intend to spend much of their time out and about in the city. It's also worth noting that the bunk beds are situated in the hallway, so we think these beds would be better suited to children.

This home is far from a pristine condition, but we're sure you can spot the wear and tear from the photos. The exposed wooden beams and the older-looking elements help create a special kind of charm that's hard to find in Madrid these days. The Open Library might also have one of the finest kitchens we've seen, equipped with enough dishes space to cook for a small army. The fact that it's also located within walking distance from the Prado and Puerta del sol makes this home a great, relaxed stay.

A bright space with tastefully exposed brickwork and an American-style kitchen, you’ll find plenty here to make yourself feel at home. Shifting Gears has clearly been designed by someone with an eye for interiors. Even though the footprint is pretty small, the space has been manipulated cleverly to make it feel much bigger. Some of the design is more what you’d expect to find in Copenhagen than in Madrid (the wall-mounted bike feels like a particular candidate for an Instagram post). There’s even a balcony, which although too small for socialising, has a lovely view out over La Latina.


Shifting Gears

What this compact apartment lacks in size, it makes up for in style. Cool and contemporary, we think it works best for solo travellers, couples, and digital nomads – especially those keen to explore Madrid on foot. The living space has funky neon signs and industrial-chic accents. Though snug, the kitchen is well-suited to rustling up light bites – there's also a high-top table that can be used as a work-from-home space. The cherry on top is the location in La Latina. You'll find restaurants and tapas bars aplenty here, plus all the must-see landmarks like Plaza Mayor and the Royal Palace are about a ten-minute walk away.

This minimal pad is located in the vibrant Lavapiés neighbourhood and offers an ideal stay on the doorstep of the Plaza Mayor and Reina Sofía Museum. The apartment itself is modern, though the kitchen needs a refresh – that said, some of Madrid’s most eclectic restaurants are right on your doorstep. With space for six guests, two of which will be on the living room sofa bed, it'll do nicely as a city base – all the sights are within easy reach, and Lavapiés metro is just a short walk away.
