We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. We think it's best for couples or solo travellers, though a sofa bed could sleep an additional guest if needed. The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.


Espinas

This unique loft apartment is perfect for a family, a small group of friends, or two couples looking for a stylish and comfortable base in Madrid. It’s in a vibrant part of the city, close to restaurants and shops, and within walking distance of many of the key attractions – Plaza Mayor and the Prado Museum are less than twenty minutes away on foot. If you don’t feel like walking, hop on the metro at nearby Embajadores. The apartment is modern and attractive, equipped with everything needed for a city break.

Twenty minutes on foot from Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol, and El Retiro Park, this apartment is well-placed to explore. Many shops, restaurants, and metro stations are nearby, as well as some of Madrid's most famous markets. When you're not sightseeing, this central home is practical and comfortable. We love the exposed brick and stone walls, though it does mean it's a little dark. The kitchen is the ideal size to rustle up lighter fare, but we suspect you'd prefer dining out.

The exposed wooden beams and the older-looking elements help create a special kind of charm that's hard to find in Madrid these days. The fact that it's also located within walking distance from the Prado and Puerta del sol makes this home a great, relaxed stay.

Pause for a coffee on the buzzing Calle Cava Baja before picking a spot to bask in the sunshine beside El Retiro Lake.

The apartment accommodates five, with three sleeping on sofa beds, so though perhaps a little compact, the flexibility is there if you need it. And while you’ll need to climb some stairs to reach this fourth-floor pad, the stylish interiors and little balcony are a treat after a long day of sightseeing.

Based around an open living area, Peaks & Valleys is well proportioned and generally a sociable space. It’s not in pristine condition, as evidenced by the marks on the walls, but that’s an aesthetic consideration, and doesn’t make the home any less comfortable. The metro station in Lavapiés is close to the flat, and while the square outside is a little rough around the edges, there are several lively bars and restaurants.

My Way

This minimal pad is located in the vibrant Lavapiés neighbourhood and offers an ideal stay on the doorstep of the Plaza Mayor and Reina Sofía Museum. The apartment itself is modern, though the kitchen needs a refresh – that said, some of Madrid’s most eclectic restaurants are right on your doorstep. With space for six guests, two of which will be on the living room sofa bed, it'll do nicely as a city base – all the sights are within easy reach, and Lavapiés metro is just a short walk away.

Fashioned in Spain

Located in the heart of La Latina, a traditional neighbourhood in the centre of Madrid, you'll be just a few meters from Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol with this home as your base. With an open-plan kitchen and living area, plus a private courtyard terrace, it's easy to chill out between excursions here. While this home features stylish and contemporary designs, it lacks natural daylight – so it is best suited to those who intend to spend much of their time out and about in the city. It's also worth noting that the bunk beds are situated in the hallway, so we think these beds would be better suited to children.

Some of the design is more what you’d expect to find in Copenhagen than in Madrid (the wall-mounted bike feels like a particular candidate for an Instagram post). There’s even a balcony, which although too small for socialising, has a lovely view out over La Latina.


Shifting Gears

This fabulous three-bedroom apartment is stylishly decorated throughout and brimming with character. The open-plan living room has lovely high ceilings, beautiful period windows, and a bright and airy feel. The bedrooms might not be the largest bedrooms we've ever seen, but they all have a lovely, calming feel and do the job just fine. We also love all the original paintings  throughout the home - this host has style!

This cosy apartment has everything you need from a city stay – it's blessed with floods of natural light, it exudes a peaceful vibe and it's situated right in the heart of Madrid. Homely and authentic, it's the perfect place to explore the Spanish capital.

Wander out of the building and you'll almost immediately reach the vibrant Plaza Mayor, one of Madrid's most enlivened areas. Stop off for tapas, paella or risotto, complemented by a fresh glass of sangria. Keep strolling through the centre and you'll feel energised by the infectious fervour of the city. 

Spend your days at your own pace, whether it's visiting the fascinating museums, marvelling at chic artwork in the galleries or just perusing the charming streets. The beauty of Madrid is that it caters to every energy. You can even catch a world-class football game at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, a short metro ride away.

However you spent your Spanish escape, the tranquil haven of the apartment resets your mind and body. Snuggle up on the sofa with a film or just chat away at the dining table with some good food and drink.

Centrally located in Madrid’s vibrant Lavapiés neighbourhood, this practical apartment offers plenty in the way of nearby sights, with the Royal Palace of Madrid within walking distance, as well as the lively barrio of La Latina. The space itself is compact and there’s not much natural light here. You’ll want to pack light and leave your main meals up to the many nearby restaurants due to the small kitchenette too. But as a functional base for sightseeing aplenty, this pocket-sized pad does nicely.

In a central spot with bigger than average square footage, this city pad has a lot going for it. Situated in the heart of Centro, Madrid’s historic core, you’ve got easy access to must-see landmarks, shops, restaurants, and bars. As well as a lounge, the home boasts a separate dining room – perfect for a leisurely breakfast before seeing the sights – and a mezzanine office for anyone travelling for work. While the neutral colour palette here won’t be to everyone’s tastes, we think this home is a great option for those with location at the top of their wish list.

Pearl of Madrid

This Madrid apartment is perfect for solo travellers and couples. It's small but packed with style, from colourful artwork to contemporary details. Layout-wise, it's similar to a studio – a glass wall divides the space, but it has curtains for privacy. You'll have a glimpse of the cathedral, too – proof that you're right in the heart of the action here. All the must-see spots are within walking distance. Mercado de la Cebada is practically next door, Plaza Mayor is ten minutes on foot, and an array of bars and restaurants are at your fingertips.

Simplicity is at the fore when it comes to Windcomb. The sense of space is not something to be taken for granted, either. Eight people, and not a sofa bed in sight. Unfortunately, it’s rather common for unscrupulous landlords to try to shoehorn people in, but that’s certainly not the case here. It’s a bit of a pain to have to climb up the steps, but that’s an occupational risk when you test so many homes in old buildings – it’s hardly a dealbreaker.
