The great thing about living so close to a park is that it can feel like your private garden (albeit one you've generously allowed everybody else to visit). This elegant apartment sits just across the street from El Parque del Buen Retiro, an expansive green space in the heart of Madrid filled with gardens, fountains and galleries — Palacio de Cristal is only fifteen minutes' walk away, for example. It would be fair to say that the design choices were inspired by this proximity to nature, with a tastefully painted tropical motif on the wall of the living area and an enclosed glass balcony off the main bedroom filled with plants. Surprisingly, this isn't the only balcony, with another giving wonderful views of the park — who wouldn't want to wake up to that sight? Back inside, the herringbone parquet flooring, dazzlingly white kitchen and chic statement lighting combine for an interior that exudes contemporary luxury. When we go to some places, it’s obvious that they are destined to be Plum homes. Such is the case with Cape Route. It’s a lovely flat, with an elegant aesthetic that never feels too over the top. It’s also practical – the kitchen in particular is well-equipped and seems like it could handle everything. Outside the flat is just as good – the building is newly renovated, with twenty-four-hour security (and a very cute communal courtyard), and you’re right on the border of Salamanca and Chueca, so there’s plenty to do.

Situated in the heart of L'Esquerra de l’Eixample, this neighbourhood is a hit for cafe culture and art lovers. The apartment may be a better base for travellers seeking a lively stay in Barcelona, as you'll find gay bars and a student atmosphere within strolling distance. In a traditional building but fully modernised inside, you'll have that perfect mix of period features and contemporary furnishings – think high ceilings, tall Juliet balconies and wood floors. There's a huge, structural steel beam running through the centre of the open-layout living and dining space and it just fits in with the styling perfectly, acting as a handy room divider. On one side you'll find the cosy sofa, desk space and a wall of shelves, while the other is reserved for relaxed dining at home on trendy chairs made from metal and bamboo.

There's an excellent kitchen with a couple of stools so you can hang out and chat while you're cooking, and it's not short of equipment so you can really go to town if you feel like throwing a mini dinner party. Three bedrooms make it perfect for a family or a group of friends, and there's a handy office space if you'll be working during your stay.

Surrounded by great bars and restaurants, and just steps from the lush green park, it's a lovely neighbourhood just minutes from the nearest Metro station for easy access to the rest of the city.

We love the living and dining room, complete with mid-century chairs and a chandelier to create an elegant glow for dinner parties. Another fabulous use of light comes from the shuttered windows to your private balcony. With three sets of rich, wooden folding doors, you can step out to the railings with a glass of tempranillo after supper to watch the city light up at nightfall. With decorative, gilded bed frames in the sumptuous bedrooms, you’ll even feel stylish while you sleep. Rest up well, because you’ve got some exploring to do the next morning – the three galleries of the Art Walk are all less than fifteen minutes away.

Despite being located in the heart of Malasaña, Autumn Jungle is tucked away on a quiet street. Walking to Plaza Mayor or Palacio Real will be a breeze, but the nearby streets of Madrid's trendiest neighbourhood will have you stopping in art galleries and cosy bars along the way. This is a well-executed home with curated artwork, where special attention has been given to the details. It might not be the biggest home in our collection, but it has a pleasant, bohemian chic vibe that fits in perfectly in the spirit of Malasaña.

Keen to be in the hustle and bustle? This apartment, just a ten-minute stroll from Gran Vía, may be a great choice. It's easy to get to all the landmarks on foot or by metro, and there are a lot of bars and restaurants nearby. Unsurprisingly it can get a tad noisy – but that's part of the city experience. We love the bright living area, and the two snug bedrooms channel Spanish sunshine with their yellow paint. Size-wise, it's rather compact but still comfortable – just note that it's on the second floor and lacks a lift.

Malasaña is famous for being slightly outrageous, which is probably why Queen of the Castle is in it. A tour of this home reveals a glamorous hybrid design theme that balances modern baroque-inspired pieces with jungle and safari themes – dear lovers of minimalism, you might want to stay elsewhere. But if gold-coated flora and fauna with an occasional crown-cum-skull ensemble sound like heaven to you, then you'll find Queen of the Castle an absolute delight. Not to mention that you'll be within walking distance to Puerta del Sol and the vibrant neighbourhood of Chueca.

This is an elaborate home that impresses with the broad strokes as well as fine ones. An enviable structure with high ceilings and big windows is filled with custom-made furniture that leaves plenty of space to move around. We loved the use of space that puts desks, chairs and bold art pieces in unexpected places – against all odds, it works.

The Porcelain Penguin

The most remarkable thing about Espinas is the quiet. Despite having three balconies, and being in the middle of Lavapiés, the street it looks onto is actually fairly calm. The building is old, and a lot of the original structure features prominently in the flat, which has been designed to complement the space, rather than dominate it. There is some pretty loud wallpaper though, which stops the design from falling into the dreaded ‘neutral’ category.
