This breezy flat takes the meaning of beachfront to a whole new level. It sits just above the sands of Playa Silgar – and trust us, when we say you'll spend every minute soaking up the scenery, we mean it. Mornings here begin with a cup of coffee on the terrace, listening to the waves and watching the tide roll in, while nights end with a glass of Cava as the sun slowly dips below the horizon. With the Atlantic Ocean stretched out before you and the lively beach just below, we can't think of anything dreamier – in our opinion, it's the quintessential seaside getaway.

Even when watching Netflix in the living room, you can still make the most of the jaw-dropping views thanks to the glass doors. The design is the essence of coastal chic – think oak beams on the ceilings, copper light fixtures and every shade of blue imaginable. We particularly love the ivy-covered fireplace, the traditional Spanish tiles in the bathrooms and the rustic kitchen stocked with all the cookware you'll need. 

Sanxenxo is a lively resort, home to many mouth-watering restaurants serving fresh-caught seafood, boutique shops and trendy bars. With the beach, coastal paths and eateries aplenty on your doorstep, some fun in the Spanish sun is a guarantee.

Situated in the picturesque Lima Valley, this location offers up an alternative to the classic beach break. Instead allowing you to soak up some typically Portuguese culture, cuisine, and even some Roman ruins in the history-laden villages that dot the valley. Hike or bike through unspoiled verdant landscapes, perhaps stopping at an authentic eatery for a taste of the local cuisine (we especially love the selections of local cheeses and meats on offer, as well as the hearty regional Caldo Verde). Then, it's back to the calm and comfort of your home away from home. 

Evenings can be spent sweating away the stress in your private sauna, replicating Portuguese favourites in the traditional covered outdoor churrasco, or simply absorbing every aspect of that phenomenal panoramic vista with a glass of Vinho Verde in hand. This charming home is a true haven for rest and relaxation. Built in 1767, the manor house has been renovated into a wellness retreat. It’s a quiet oasis situated between the mountains and the sea on the coast of Galicia, perfectly positioned for mountain hikes and white sand beaches. Enjoy sea views, explore eucalyptus forests, and discover secret lagoons – your host can arrange all manner of excursions, in addition to offering daily yoga classes. The house is beautiful, a tranquil base.

Situated near one of Portugal’s oldest towns, this home offers peace and tranquillity. There are plenty of grounds to explore, including a pond (our favourite area), mature woodland and numerous paths leading into the countryside. Alternatively, simply unwind next to the private pool or admire the enchanting garden views from the veranda of the main house and the cottage.

This place is ideal for a large group of friends or family – there’s a charming separate cottage with a twin bedroom and kitchenette too, which provides a perfect space for those in search of a tad more privacy. If you love traditional interiors, then you’re in luck – from the grandfather clock in the dining room to the farmhouse-style kitchen and antique beds, this home is full of old-world character.

Nestled in a wonderful rural landscape, there’s plenty to see and do. Ponte de Lima, one of Portugal’s most historic towns, with its ornate squares, cobbled alleyways, and vast riverside Monday market, is just 13 kilometres away. The country’s only national park, the mountainous nature reserve of Peneda Geres National Park, is just a forty-minute drive away and offers prehistoric remains and walking trails, as well as golden eagles, deer and wolves – oh my.

Located between the historic fortified town of Caminha and the golden sands of Vila Praia de Ancora – just 10 minutes away – this captivating casa offers access to a wealth of stunning natural landscapes, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture and sensational local food and wine. We don’t know about you, but that sounds like heaven to us.

You’ll love taking your morning coffee at the breakfast bar in the open-plan living area before stepping out into the garden. Bagsy one of the loungers and get stuck into your holiday read while topping up your tan on the poolside patio. You’ll be treated to countryside and even sea views from here. Feel revived with a refreshing dip in your private, outdoor pool before sauntering over to the barbecue area. Gorge on Portuguese eats while sat around the wooden dining table on the covered terrace.

This restored farmhouse sits in the nature-rich Portuguese region of Minho, encircled by valleys, sparkling rivers, plenty of cycling routes, and historical towns. You get a beautiful slice of that breathtaking nature from your countryside oasis. 

Whether you’re playing football on the soft grass, admiring the view from the terrace, or listening to the birds chatter while lying around the pool, nature is all around. You’re even welcomed by bougainvillea and cypress trees as you approach the stone brick home.

You’ll first notice the home’s traditional façade. Made up of three houses, two of which have long histories – the main house was a baker's, and the annexe, now a games room, was a distillery. Make use of the original bread and pizza oven for unforgettable meals, and whittle away evenings playing pool and drinking local wine. 

There’s plenty to keep you entertained here, but perhaps all you really want is to catch up on your book beside the pool. Let the hours drift by, breathing in the fresh country air while topping up your tan. Come dusk, the place to be is your balcony – nothing beats watching the sun dip into the sea. 

When it’s time to explore, you’re less than a mile from Afife and its beachy cafes, surf shops, seafood restaurants, and long stretch of sugary white sand. When you’re not catching waves or relaxing on the beach, hop on a hiking trail to one of the nearby waterfalls and discover the rugged mountain range.

But this home is not without its luxuries – there’s even a Turkish-style steam room.

The interior is lovely, but the commanding outdoors takes the cake. Spellbinding views pull you out to the pool, where you’ll spend blissful hours reading, drinking fresh smoothies, and taking dips in the water to cool off. And after an afternoon of badminton or volleyball on the grass, you’ll love sipping a glass of Vinho Verde, the local wine, while looking out to the changing sky.

Explore the charming town of Paredes de Coura, a fifteen-minute drive away, and spend an afternoon on the Taboão River Beach. Nestled in a small village, and just a short drive from the jewel of Costa Verse, Viana do Castelo, this stunning villa sits in the verdant hills above the Atlantic Ocean. It’s a short distance to the powdery sands of Praia de Afife, the border between Spain’s Galicia, the adventure-packed rivers of the Rio Lima estuary and the countryside hiking trails in the Lima valley.

Inside, the space is dominated by an expansive, wooden-beamed living area where you’ll find an elegant dining table for sharing bacalhau fish stew dinners and a contemporary lounge boasting ambient lighting for cosy nights in sharing aperitifs. The sleek kitchen has plenty of prep space, courtesy of a glossy island, which keeps the space social. A second dining room leads off the kitchen and out onto the patio – we’ll be honest, this one’s our favourite – perfect for alfresco dinners together under pink-hued sunsets.

Staying outside, there are plenty of spaces for every member to unwind. The patio is decked out with lounge chairs, perfect for soaking up the sun before plunging into the pristine pool for a cooling dip. We have to say we think the garden is the ideal spot to begin mornings over fresh coffee and locally bought pastéis de nata and to end evenings with caipirinha cocktails under the starlit sky. 

Soul of Afife 

Between mature trees and open grassland, this modern villa invites travellers to the quiet countryside of Caminha. Not far from Santana, the shores of Praia de Moledo offer perfect surfing conditions – so be sure to visit and give it a go.

Inside, this bright home boasts a dramatic design with floor-to-ceiling windows and giant pop art pieces. With a stripped-back interior, the space feels calm and inviting. After waking up with the natural light, you'll want to sip galão while stretching your legs on the deck.

Soak up the morning sunshine as you read a book by your private pool. Why not bake pastel de nata with your children in the kitchen? Then, head out along a hiking trail before cosying up in front of the fireplace – this home encourages everyone to reconnect with nature.

Freshen up beneath your rainfall shower ahead of dinner – you can even have the best restaurant reservations made on your behalf as one of the extra services available, so all you have to do is enjoy yourself.

The home is set on a 210-acre wine estate – you'll have nothing to disturb you here but the odd worker roaming the fields and vineyards. Inside, the traditional features may not be to everyone's taste, but if you ask us, the outside area is by far the home's biggest draw. From the dining terrace to the private swimming pool and garden, you'll have ample space to bask in the Portuguese sunshine and remote setting. A car is a necessity here, but the charming towns of Ponte de Lima and Viana do Castelo are both a short drive away.

The Minho region is less visited than Porto or Lisbon, but no less beautiful, and Twigs at Twilight perfectly embodies its rural elegance. The house features some great amenities such as a large first-floor terrace with picturesque views of the area, a private pool and ping-pong table. For day trips, take an eight-minute drive to visit the spa town of Mondariz Balneario, where you'll find some restaurants, scenic footpaths and a sandy beach with sheltered waters for swimming. If you fancy spending the day by the seaside, Cesantes is just a forty-minute car ride away.

As the day draws to a close, gaze out at the Atlantic Ocean shimmering on the horizon – a glass of Vinho Verde in hand. 

Inside, the glossy kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up a feast – although we think the outdoor kitchen and alfresco dining space will be hard to resist. Your hosts have thought of everything here, from a ping-pong table downstairs to a food lift ready to cart your meals from one floor to the next. You can lounge about on the sofa with a book from the host's collection, play a board game around the table or retreat to the four cosy bedrooms for a good night's sleep. 

When you're ready to venture out, Moledo's expansive beach is only a few kilometres away. A hotspot for surfing, you'll love dipping your toes in the Atlantic and feeling the sand between your toes. Your host can also arrange various tours, wine-tasting experiences and private chefs specialising in traditional Portuguese dishes to make your stay here extra special.

Thanks to its elevated position, this home offers eyefuls of Galician countryside views at every turn. The simple cottage decor inside feels rustic and traditional, and may not suit those looking for an ultra-modern experience. But head outside and you’ll find the home’s terraced surroundings undeniably enchanting. A private pool, folds of flowerbeds, scads of vibrantly coloured fruit trees and sweeping views of the hills and woodlands await. Its rural locale means you’ll need a car to get around, but you needn’t drive far for a taste of local life. The spa town of Mondariz-Balneario is a ten-minute drive, and when you’re craving a day by the coast, you’ll find Cesantes forty minutes away.
