Set a few meters from the lake, this spacious and comfortable home in the Finnish wilderness is the perfect place to reset and enjoy spending time with family and friends. This quiet, sun-filled spot is surrounded by nature, but you have everything you need in this contemporary cabin, including a full kitchen, ample dining room and a huge U-shaped sofa. It may be peaceful, but you certainly won't be bored. Younger children will love playing on the swings and the lakeside beach, while the older kids can get competitive with the badminton set. The rowing boat or kayak will take you out onto the lake, where all you can hear is the lapping of water and birdsong in the trees. Back on dry land, enjoy lunch on your private terrace with unending views, or take a sauna, Finnish style, with a wood-fired stove. Evenings are made for stargazing from the hot tub, you may even be lucky enough to enjoy a light show, courtesy of the Aurora Borealis. The nearest town is just 4.5km away for those forgotten essentials and there's a National Park, with lakes and walking trails, 12km from the cabin.

Experiencing this beautiful part of the world is on a lot of bucket lists, and with a home like this it's easy to see why. Built on a rocky slope, where the still waters of Lake Kuorikkajärvi lap at the edge of the forest, this place scores highly on location alone. Inside, with high vaulted ceilings, a mezzanine loft room and a sleek modern kitchen, it's less of a cabin and more of a sophisticated lake house. The living space has huge windows to frame those perfect views, and an oversized sofa facing the fireplace for cosy evenings indoors. But if you're here in the summer months, the chances are you'll be here for the great outdoors. Barbecue on the home's deck, light one of the campfires overlooking the water, and gaze at the stars from the shore. You'll have your own jetty and a rowing boat, so you can spend days in or on the water. There's a typical lakeside cabin for your private use, with a wood-fired sauna, but you'll also have the option of the electric sauna inside the home. To top it all off, the host can add in a few extras. Book the use of a Jacuzzi on your deck, or ask about meeting the animals at the farm they own nearby.

The traditional wooden exterior gives way to a beautiful open-plan space that's great for socialising in style. Cook up some hearty fare in the kitchen while your guests stretch out beside the crackling fire and watch the snow falling outside. If the weather is warmer, you can fire up the grill and enjoy an alfresco meal on the terrace with the lake as a backdrop. And, should you want to fully embrace the Finnish way of life, there's even a sauna where you can sweat out your stresses and inhale the sweet scent of pinewood. 

Your host will provide a boat, so you can row out onto the shimmering lake, and there's a kid-friendly natural sand beach on the plot. Skiers can shred some powder at Valkealampi Ski Centre – it's just a 10km drive away from your front door. And, if you fancy hiking, riding, or cycling through the forests, then there are plenty of nearby trails that will lead you through these dramatic landscapes.

Set on the shores of Lake Isojärv – a beautiful, shallow water lake with a sandy beach – this red and white home in Central Finland makes a picture perfect all-seasons escape. In the winter, you can rent snowshoes from your host and trample about in your own private winter wonderland. In summer you can go horse riding, hiking, swim in the lake or take out the boat (included with the home) for a leisurely paddle. 

The inside of this home is elegant, cosy and welcoming, whatever time of the year you arrive. The open-plan living room is styled in neutral tones and soft furnishings, creating a calming atmosphere. The kitchen is well equipped for whatever you need, and the bedrooms are simple but comfortable. Sweat out all the toxins from your body in a separate sauna in a wooden cabin by the lake. And who knows, if you time it right you might catch a glimpse of the Northern lights.

The sweet, dollhouse-like interior feels as though it should smell of freshly baked pie – it’s warm and wholesome with traditional touches yet fully updated with modern features and all the home comforts that make for an idyllic lakeside hideaway. Wood-panelled walls and charming wallpaper give each room an inviting feel while underfloor heating ensures feet will stay toasty during the cold winter months. You’ll be just steps away from the beautiful Lake Isojärvi where you can enjoy free access to the boat for peaceful days spent on the water, and the private sauna is the perfect place to end the day, especially if you plan to make good use of the nearby eighteen-kilometre Isojärvi recreation trail. It’s ideal for horseback riding and the stables are located just a short drive away at Korpijukola. During the winter months you can rent snowshoes and kicksleds from your helpful hosts, and come summer they sell delicious berries and homemade berry products grown and produced on their farm. Outside, a pretty deck with a bistro table offers the perfect spot for soaking up the peace and tranquillity of the lake over your morning coffee, and the large terrace is ideal for stretching out on a lounger as you stare at the stars and cross your fingers and toes for a glimpse of the Aurora Borealis.

If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal.

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

Only built in 2021, this log cabin by Lake Myllyjärvi is the stuff of dreams. One wall of the home has been constructed purely out of glass, so you can admire the vista while sitting around the dining table or getting toasty around the fireplace. Stepping out through the door will take you to the covered terrace complete with seating and a barbecue ready for bursts of warm weather and just beyond that is another seating area arranged around a fire pit. There's also a rowboat out here that guests can borrow to paddle on the lake. The real star of the show, however, is situated a few metres away from the main home. We all know that Finns love a sauna, but this cupola-style outhouse is taking it to the next level. As well as a wood-burner sauna stove, there's a dressing room, shower and kitchenette inside for the full spa experience. The nearest town for provisions is Padasjoki only fifteen minutes' drive away, but the larger city of Lahti — complete with the Sibelius Hall concert venue — takes just under an hour to reach by car.

If you've been craving a rural getaway, you've come to the right spot. This charming cabin is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life, as you'll be surrounded by verdant nature, allowing you to relax in peace. This home even comes with a sumptuous sauna, giving you plenty of opportunities to unwind every single day with a glass of red as you while away the hours in pure bliss. 

Our favourite place in this home is the cosy dining table by the floor-to-ceiling windows that offer you a lovely view of nature and the nearby lake – it's even fitted with lovely fairy lights that twinkle as you watch the amber glow of the sunset with your loved ones. Snuggle up in the hanging chair with a blanket as you delve into a brand new book, watching the local wildlife through the windows.

You're only a short walk away from Kuortaneenjärvi lake, allowing you to relax every single day as you watch the glistening waters – we recommend making a homemade picnic to enjoy here as the children play on the swing set. You should at least once experience the sunset from this spot too – we promise that it'll make an amazing memory.




Marble Cabin

Deep in the woods, this cabin is the perfect hideaway where you can immerse yourself in nature and kiss your troubles goodbye. It's nestled in the Northern Savonia region of Finland, where the air is fresh and there are more lakes than you can count – press pause and enjoy the scenery. 

The cabin's huge windows frame the landscapes outside, and you'll love getting cosy next to the fire as you gaze across the lake. Watch the snowflakes floating down during the winter, or admire the dappled light through the trees in the summer months. Head outside onto the terrace and fire up the barbeque when you get hungry, and savour some delicious salmond hot off the grill. And, your host can even organise for a hot tub to be delivered, so you can enjoy a long soak beneath the night sky

It would be easy to hardly move from this tranquil spot, but if you're a fan of outdoor activities then you are spoilt for choice here. There is direct access to Lake Konaanjärvi, and your host will even provide kayaks and a rowing boat for you to use. You can also head out into the forests to go trekking or catch your own dinner on a fishing trip. And, at the end of your adventures, you can do as the Finns do and soothe your muscles with a revitalising session in your very own sauna.

At first glance, this might seem like a charming, rustic wood cabin in a stunning lakeside setting – which it is. But head inside for a pleasingly unexpected vibe. We’re talking lavish interiors so polished and trendy you’ll think you stepped onto an Elle Decor shoot, but with added ‘hygge’. For every cool, white leather armchair there is a cosy rug to sink your toes into. For every insta-worthy light fitting, there is a candlestick or a huge open fireplace. The newly fitted kitchen comes fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. 

Take a glass of wine out to the front terrace and soak in the wood-fired outdoor bathtub, with lake Saimaa by your side – utter bliss. When you’re not gallivanting around the lake in your boat (included with the cabin), settle into the sauna. Then fire up the gas barbecue and grill a fish caught that day. This is as remote as they come, so make sure you stock up on supplies before you arrive. Then simply enjoy the peace and serenity.

There's no better place to escape the hustle and bustle of city life than this charming log cabin surrounded by towering Finnish pine trees on the banks of Lake Päijänne. Though the setting couldn't be more rustic, the interior is all about contemporary comforts. The glossy kitchen is completely modern and well-equipped for preparing family meals, best enjoyed around the large dining table, while the living area offers plenty of cosy seating to curl up on, a flat-screen TV to keep you entertained and a crackling fireplace that's ideal for chilly evenings. Even when you're inside you can make the most of the scenery, thanks to the huge windows showcasing the woodland views. Spend your days in the great outdoors – go for a dip in the lake, take the rowboat out for a spin, do a spot of birdwatching from the expansive deck or explore the nature trails and interlinked islands at Päijänne National Park. When your feet are sore, relax in the private Finnish sauna or take a soak in the hot tub, which you can rent all year round.

As far as Finnish log cabins go, this one is pretty monumental – and an out-and-out winner if you’re looking for a holiday hideaway for an extended family, or hoping to share with friends. The separate lakeside sauna house is perfectly placed for indulging in some Finnish sauna traditions. A short dash down the wooden steps and you can plunge into the cool blue of Lake Päijänne. If you prefer to be on the water, rather than in it, hop into the little rowing boat for a bit of bobbing along. The lofty wooden home is only a little further up the bank, with a year-round hot tub just outside, and another sauna inside. There’s a generous wooden verandah from where you can survey the pretty lake views through the spindly, silvery pine trees. Out here, there’s space to enjoy the long evenings or starry skies and a gas barbecue to ensure you don’t go hungry. Inside, the double-height living space is grand but cosy, with floor-to-ceiling honey-coloured pine and a warming wood burner. Cook up a family feast in the in the generously sized kitchen after a day exploring the Päijänne National Park, hiking the Pulkkilanharju nature trail or cruising the inland waterways.

With more than 188,000 lakes, Finland feels more like water than land. And while you're spoilt for choice in the country, we're pretty enamoured with this cute little cabin near lake Avusjärvi. Set back 100m from the shoreline, the wooden home is a great basecamp for days spent hiking through pine forests, cycling quiet roads or canoeing across pristine landscapes. For the really brave, we suggest a dip in the water before jumping into the home's lakeside sauna. If you're still cold, head into the open-plan living space and light the wood-burning fire. Move quickly to nab the rocking chair positioned in front of it. Bedrooms all lead off from the main living area and are a cosy mix of pastel colour schemes and knitted furnishings. Our favourite part? The front porch with its table and chairs is perfect for enjoy the long Finnish evenings with views over the lake.

While away the days on the terrace loungers with your loved ones. Grill a fish on the barbecue, freshly caught that day in the lake that sparkles in front of you. Perhaps throw in some mushrooms that you foraged nearby that morning. This stuff is great for the soul. Indoors, expect ‘woodland cabin’ vibes with added polish. Beneath the high, wood panelled ceilings, a modern kitchen is stocked with everything you need. Throw some wood into the log burner and sink your toes into a fluffy rug after a day of exploring. Or head out to the sauna before cooling off in the lake for an evening swim. During the day, when not making use of the complimentary rowing boat or exploring the area, head to nearby Heinola for its shops and cafes. Or don’t. It’s very easy to stay put here and be at one with nature.
