When we think of Lapland, we think of the Northern lights, lots of snow, and cute as a button wooden chalets. And this home isn't disappointing. While we can't make any promises about the aurora borealis, we can tell you that this wooden cabin is serving up some seriously homely vibes. Set near a lake - which is perfect for summertime dips - the plot is traditionally Scandinavian. Thick tree trunks have been used to create the walls, while further wood panelling separates the bedrooms. The combined living space has got an L-shaped sofa for nights snuggled in front of the fire. A small kitchen has got everything needed for lighter meals. For those hitting the slopes, there's a communal ski waxing room to prep your equipment. And of course, what lodge would be complete without its own sauna to sweat it out after a long day?

Made of ancient silver logs, this home emerges from between the quiet trees of the forest landscape as if it’s always stood there. In a peaceful part of the area close to the Swedish border, it’s in a great position for exploring the quieter town of Yllasjarvi, or the livelier resort of Iso-Ylläs. This cabin is ideal for a group of friends or families holidaying together. It’s all functional comfort and welcoming warmth, the multiple fireplaces adding extra snugness in the social spaces. There’s even a fireplace on the all-wood veranda outside. The cabin is dotted with little luxuries too. Every bedroom has its own bathroom and there’s a ski waxing room to ensure smooth gliding along the cross country trails in the area. It’s the private sauna that really tops it off for us. Throw some water on the löyly to really get the humidity going. Embrace the Finnish tradition and jump in the snow afterwards. 

Knots and Burls

Now, this is what you call a log cabin: a striking, sturdy wooden home, made from centuries-old Kelo wood. In case you’re wondering (we were), Kelo is an old, dried-out pine tree that’s shed its bark. It’s a natural antique, unique to the arctic region. And this home has it in double-height abundance. If it wasn’t for the wood, there’d be an echo inside the vast living space, but the rough edges and super-smooth panelling combine to give this home warmth. The wood burner and customary sauna help too, of course. There’s a generous covered porch for kicking off your kit after a day on the slopes, and a ski waxing room so you can prep for the next day. All told, it’s a fabulous family space inside a great big chunk of tree, conveniently located for the ski bus.

Whether you're sweating it out in this home's private sauna or curled up with a book watching the snow fall on the pine trees, this home is a modern take on the traditional wooden lodge. Set in the heart of Lapland and a 10-minute drive from Ylläs ski resort, this spot has got everything needed for fabulous group holidays. When you're not hitting the slopes, there are sledges for exploring the woods, or during summer jump into the nearby lake, just five minutes away by car. The long evenings can be spent relaxing on the balcony on the home's wicker furniture, watching the endless twilight glow - we recommend stocking up the modern white kitchen with plenty of drinks and snacks and making a night of it. During winter, the living room fire will keep you cosy, and you can watch the snow fall through the double height windows.

Surrounded by pine forests, a lake, and ski slopes, this spot in Lapland is about as Finnish as they come. Built in 2018, the modern home channels traditional wooden lodges with its sloping roof and planked exterior. Hikes and skiing are the order of the day, dependent on which season you visit. On your return, a roaring double-height wood-burning will warm you up in the living space. Need some music? The sound bar is great for showing off your playlist skills. Bedrooms draw inspiration from their surroundings with patterned wall paper that depicts forest scenes. However you choose to spend your day, finish it by piling into the backlit sauna to sweat it out in true Scandinavian style.

Frosted Heather

A four-minute walk from Sport Resort Yllӓs, you’ll be snuggled up in the perfect apartment for enjoying all that holidays in Kolari have to offer. With wooden walls and partitions and Scandi-inspired furnishings, you'll get the cabin feel but in the luxury of an aparthotel. Take a breather on the balcony and admire nature’s beauty from your private platform. In the evening, sit down to dinner in the chic surroundings, and rejuvenate in the home sauna. Outdoors, adventurous possibilities await. Spend your time at the resort, skiing on the slopes, biking the mountain trails, or simply indulging on sweet treats at the wintry restaurants and cafes. 

Cocoa Bean

Near the secluded village of Ylläsjärvi, if you’re looking to escape all the noise and bustle back home you're in the right place. Part of a traditional cabin, this ground floor apartment blends wood panelling and simple Scandi furnishings to create an authentic place to experience this beautiful part of the country. Designed with comfort in mind, the living space isn't huge but there's everything you could need – including a large fireplace to gather round for winter evenings in. And outside there's a little deck for sitting out in the summer. Drive to the slopes at Ylläs ski resort nearby, set off on one of the many hiking trails from your door or head to the lake for some swimming. Whatever the season, there's plenty of natural beauty to bathe in here.

Finishing in Style

Wooden walls and floors, outdoor decking, and large sash windows give this semi-detached home an open feel – perfect for groups of friends, who don't mind having a neighbour next door (or who might want to take over both homes). The home is made of thermo log, recently built in 2019, so this is a home that takes the log cabin vibe and modernises it. In the summer, make the most of the long nights on the balcony, watching the twilight through the pine forest that surrounds the plot. Come winter, it's only a ten-minute drive to Ylläs ski resort – when you're done, get home and bag your space in the private sauna. Evenings are best spent in the living area, in front of the burning fire and watching the TV from the grey L-shaped sofa. If that sounds a bit too chilled out, ski and snowmobile trails run by the space, perfect for exploring this corner of Finland.

Lyre's Leap

Wake up to frosted Nordic spruces and falling snowflakes glittering on the horizon when staying in this semi-detached cabin in Kolari. With wood-panelling inside and the Alpine forests surrounding you, you won't see the wood for the trees sat on the covered terrace with a cup of coffee; a fully immersive forest experience.  Bring along a pair of cross-country skis (there’s a shared drying room for storage) and explore the snow-blanketed trails on your doorstep. As you are in Lapland, try to spot a reindeer or even arrange a husky sleigh experience. The ski lift to the slopes of Äkäslompolo is less than 10 minutes drive away. Come back to your cosy home and warm up in the sauna before preparing dinner by the fireplace and then heading out on the hunt for the Northern Lights. There’s a little wooden fire-pit hut in the garden so you can spend the evening amongst the trees, even after the sun has dipped below the horizon. 

Lapland Lights

A traditional rural cabin with a modern twist, this home has everything you could need for a stay in this beautiful area. A two-storey apartment, its natural wood tones, and white and grey colour scheme make for a classic Nordic vibe, with neat, modern furnishings and woodland views. The heart of the home, the large living area is double height, with huge windows. Sectioned off from the kitchen by a large dining table for sociable evenings in, the sofas all point towards the glow of a rustic fireplace. It's a short drive to the local ski slopes in winter, or head to the lake with a swimming beach only a few kilometres away. With a sauna to soothe any aches and pains picked up skiing or hiking, this is the perfect place to get away from it all in nature's perfect playground.
