Skiing in Finland is an experience all lovers of the slopes should enjoy at some point, with thick snow and fairytale forests. This mountain home is within walking distance of the excellent Masto runs, with views far across the rocky landscape. Within a striking modern building, it's stone and dark grey cladding is an imposing sight. Inside, you'll be wowed by its floor-to-ceiling windows, its double height main room and its stylish Scandi design features. Warm up around the fire, pull up a chair and read by the window, or treat yourself to time alone in the private sauna. If you're here for the skiing, it's practically on your doorstep, and there's lockable ski storage outside. Visit in the summer for a very different view, with lush green hills perfect for hiking.

Summit Lux

Tall pines and a landscape of lakes and mountains surround this classic log cabin. This is the ideal home for a winter holiday with ski slopes and a mountain lift within easy walking distance, and cross-country trails from almost right outside the door. In summer there are lovely forest walks to enjoy and lake beaches just a short drive away. Inside the cabin, you will find a warm and welcoming space for your group to relax in, with a wood-burning stove for staying snug on those cooler evenings and a well-equipped kitchen for cooking a feast. There is also a private in-house sauna for soothing any tired muscles. This home is ideal for a family getaway in a beautiful part of the Finnish wilderness. 

Wild Pines

During the winter months, the landscape around this cosy holiday home looks like something out of Narnia. Just minutes away from the piste, it's the ideal place to call home during a winter sports trip, and it makes an equally great base for vacations in the summer too. 

Step inside, and you'll instantly feel at peace thanks to the tranquil interior space, filled with natural wood and soothing shades. The open-plan setup makes it fantastic for socialising after a long day in the great outdoors – curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or get busy making some hearty dishes in the kitchen. There's even a glazed patio, where you can gaze out at the wilderness, and your very own private sauna – do as the Finns do, and sweat out your stresses as you breathe in the calming scent of pine. 

Each morning you can be first on the slopes  – simply slip on your skis and enjoy the fresh powder cloaking the mountainside. And, when the weather is warmer, you might like to spend a day boating around one of the nearby lakes, or going on a fishing trip to catch your supper. There are also plenty of hiking and cycling trails through the majestic landscapes – however you want to spend your days, you can enjoy being at one with nature. 

Sauna Culture

This wood-built house takes cosiness to the next level, with the living room sporting a hardwood backdrop and a glimpse of khaki to provide a splash of colour, you'll feel perfectly at home. Step out into the covered seating area to watch the snowfall drop gracefully on the ground, with a hot chocolate to keep you warm.  Get your skis at the ready and head to the Vuokatti ski slopes and enjoy the scenery as you glide down the crisp snow.

Not only is skiing offered, but a short walk away is an adventure park and swimming spots – if you can withstand the cold for a refreshing plunge that is. During the warmer months, head out for a delightful hike, with many nearby routes to explore. After a day in the great outdoors, appreciate a soothing session in the sauna before retiring to the Skandi bedroom for a restful night's sleep.


The Wintry Moon

There’s more to Finland than great skiing, but this log-built home near Ruka, surrounded by forest and near the Masto ski slopes, makes for a pretty perfect vacation spot. Inside, this modern home is cosy and comfortable, with a fireplace in the living area and a big wooden table for meals with the family. Curl up with a cocoa after a day on the slopes, or in the warmer months enjoy a barbecue on the deck with a view of the forest. There is a dedicated workspace if you need to check in with the office, but otherwise, do as the locals do and relax in your personal sauna. Come summertime, hiking trails, bike parks and long arctic days where the sun waits up till midnight make this home the ideal getaway. The cabin is walking distance from public transport and the nearest ski lift, and if you venture a bit further, you'll find plenty of wilderness and National parks. To enjoy the Northern Lights, just look up!

Northern Exposure

Press pause on everyday life and lose yourself in the rugged landscapes of Sotkamo, beautiful at every time of year. Nestled amongst evergreen trees, this apartment is just a five-minute walk away from the ski slopes, and offers the perfect opportunity to get back to nature. 

Step inside, and you'll notice that there is a Nordic theme to the living space, with comfy furniture and a muted colour palette. Brew a fresh cup of coffee and curl up on the sofa beside the window to admire the snow or watch the summer sun glinting through the trees. When you get hungry, whip up some family favourites in the sleek kitchen, or step onto the balcony and fire up the barbeque for an alfresco feast if the weather allows. Kids can keep busy at the nearby play park, and at the end of the day you can do as the Finns do and enjoy an invigorating session in your very own sauna. 

If you're planning to shred some powder then the location couldn't be more convenient – you can be first onto the slopes of Vuokatti Ski Resort each morning. During the summer months, there are several trails where you can hike or cycle through the beautiful forests. If you fancy hiring a boat, then you can sail around one of the nearby lakes, and you can even go fishing to catch your own dinner – there are countless opportunities for adventure here. 

Pine View

This recently renovated log cabin is the ideal place to press pause on everyday life and immerse yourself in nature. Located in the Kuusamo region of Finland, it's part of a small collection of holiday homes and offers perfect peace where you can kick back and relax with your favourite people. 

There's plenty of rural charm inside, with reindeer skins on the walls, wooden beams and comfy furniture where you can get cosy on chilly evenings. Light up the fire and curl up on the sofa with a glass of wine, or serve up some family favourites at the long dining table. Outside you'll find a patio area if the weather is mild enough to dine alfresco, and you can round off your day as the Finns do with a relaxing session in the private sauna. 

It would be easy to spend your whole trip simply relaxing in these tranquil surroundings, but if you want to explore the area then there is plenty to do. Thrill-seekers can enjoy a day on the mountain at Ruka Ski Resort – it's just a three-minute drive away from your front door. In the warmer months, you can hike or cycle, through the rugged landscapes, and if you're good at fishing then you can even catch your dinner at one of the nearby lakes. 

Roaring Log Fire

Nestled in a forest in northern Finland, this home is a fantastic place to embrace the great outdoors. Whether you're visiting in the depths of winter or the height of summer, you can enjoy some quality time with your loved ones in this cosy cabin. 

The traditional wooden exterior gives way to a charming living space where you can kick off your boots and get comfortable. Light up the fireplace and get toasty as you gaze through the huge windows and watch the snow falling outside. Or, on balmy evenings, you can head onto the deck and serve up a delicious alfresco feast as you make some plans for the following day. 

There's no shortage of potential for adventure here. Vukatti Ski Centre is only a short drive away, and you're only a few hundred metres away from the nearby snowmobile trail. In the warmer months, take a relaxing stroll around Nuasjärvi, the serene lake close by, or paddle out in your kayak to explore. And, you can even tee off at the local golf course – it's just a quick drive away. 

The Finnish Line

This cosy apartment near Ruka is the best of both worlds. Surrounded by lush Finnish forests, at the foot of nearby ski trails, and facing the stunning Lake Talvijärvi, it's got outdoor activities for every day of the week – no matter the season. Wood and stone accents and a neutral colour palette give this home a rustic cabin-like feel that blends perfectly with the great outdoors. A comfortable base, with everything you could need, we love the private terrace and the traditional fireplace. After a day of adventures, soothe your muscles in the electric sauna before settling down for a movie night. If you'd prefer to get out and about, head into Ruka. One of the largest ski resorts in the country, it's got dozens of shops and restaurants to explore. In the winter it's all about skiing but visit in the summer for hiking, kayaking, fishing and much more.


Silver & Snow

Experience Finland at its very finest in this log cabin nestled away amongst the trees near Ruka and three kilometres from the nearby lake. Perfect for visiting in both summer and winter, this large split-level home is surrounded by stunning Finnish countryside. Look in any direction and you’re met with views of vast woodlands, while inside, the home provides a warm and cosy welcome to weary travellers. The double-height kitchen and dining space create a sense of occasion for family feasts, and the cleverly positioned log burner ensures that both the dining room and living area are kept nice and toasty in the winter. Convivial and light, the open-plan space opens onto the wrap-around terrace - perfect for letting the outdoors in and sitting out and admiring the scenery as dinner cooks on the barbecue. After a day on the slopes or an afternoon hike, rest and recharge in the sauna before settling in for a movie night in the lounge or the TV nook tucked up on the mezzanine level. And speaking of hikes, you’ll be just four kilometres away from the summer hiking trails of Valtavaara where you can really take in the breathtaking surrounding landscape. Winter visitors will also find plenty of cross-country skiing and snowmobiling trails nearby, and Ruka is home to the nearest ski resort with plenty of ski runs and a ski school, all just a short drive away.

The Cabin in the Woods

This pistachio-coloured cabin is in a winning location if you’re looking to be close to the packed powder. Based in the Vuokatti ski centre, you’ll be minutes from the Vuokatti ski slope and the centre’s cross country track. And when the weather’s warmer, it’s just a 15-minute walk to the nearest beach. Outside, there’s plenty of storage space for skis and a small terrace for those long summer nights. Of course, this being Finland, you’d expect a sauna, and this home doesn’t disappoint. So whether it’s après ski or après hike, you can be guaranteed hot steam to help you unwind. The interior of this home is cool white with warm wood, and the open, double-height living space feels grand. There’s a sturdy wood burner to keep it warm, and up the steep wooden staircase, the cosy bedrooms are perfectly comfortable. 

Glacier Mint

Some people prefer summer to winter but we think they're missing a trick, especially when it comes to this house. Nestled on the snow-capped slopes of Vuokatti, this place is perfectly located for winter fun, and there’s a ski service room to get your gear ready from the slopes. After a quick five-minute drive, you can be racing (or tentatively sliding) down those snowy tracks, hiking up the tree-studded hills, or just enjoying the scenery with a hot toddy in hand – something we can imagine doing a lot of, particularly when there's a roaring fire involved and a comfy sofa to curl up on. Though if you really want to warm your cockles, you should make a beeline for the home’s sauna, which you have all to yourself (providing you nab it before friends and family do). And, if you're still not convinced about a winter break, you can always come here in summer and while away the hours at the beach and glistening lake, which are just a stone's throw away.
