Let the kids frolic on the swings and in the sandbox in the garden, before heading off for a family trek through the woods. In the cooler months, sweat it out in the sauna, or simply sit by the rustic fireplace in the living room to warm up. The wooden interior makes for a traditional country setting, with elegant furnishings. Cook up a meal in the modern, white kitchen, before retiring to the cosy and warm bedrooms. 

The Enchanted Forest

If you're looking for an instant way to slow down and reconnect with life outside of a screen, you've come to the right cabin. Perched on the edge of lake Aitjärvi, this house of logs is all about feeling relaxed and at one with nature. Of course, there is a TV and Wifi but we won't tell the kids if you don't. To make the most out of your stay we recommend taking your morning cuppa on the terrace while birds sing overhead, going for meandering walks in the woods and cooking all your meals on the fire pit (even though there's a perfectly good oven). In the colder months, those double-height windows are perfect for gawping at how beautiful everything looks blanketed in snow and, if you do venture out, remember there's a sauna to warm up in after. This no-frills cabin is pleasingly functional, which will no doubt appeal to anyone with kids in tow. And if that wasn't enough, the secluded location, rowing boat and endless fishing opportunities should clinch the deal. 

Log Off

We’re certain that you’ll never tire of moments by the water, savouring the views while the sun is out. This lakeside home was built for days like these and more – there are two saunas, a covered outdoor dining area and kitchen with a barbecue grill, and a large lawn for picnics and relaxing under the stars. Inside, the home is sleek and stylish, with clean lines and a neutral colour palette. Rods and ice fishing tools are available if you want to take part in a spot of family fishing, and you’re always free to take the boat out on the lake. Kids are also in for a treat as there’s a sandpit, swing and toys that will keep them company while you unwind on the terrace with a drink. A session in the sauna will warm you up after an exciting day of skiing at the nearby pistes in winter.

Grey Pearl

Nestled away on the banks of Lake Saimaa, this log cabin has to be one of the more picturesque homes in our collection. There's a real sense of rural isolation here, with nothing but forest and large expanses of peaceful water for company. The home has a rowboat and a pier if you fancy exploring, but there's also the option to hire paddleboards, outboard motors and fatbikes for doing so at speed. Back inside, you can warm up from the day's excursions in the sauna — this is Finland, after all — or next to the fireplace in the living room with views of the great outdoors from the large windows. If it's warm enough to stay outside for a little longer, there are a multitude of spots from which to enjoy the tranquillity, whether it's on the balcony, the swing seat in the garden or perched around the fire pit. The nearest large town is Savonlinna — about an hour's drive away — which has an annual opera festival held in a medieval castle.

Salted Liquorice

If you’re looking for a wholesome escape, this is it. A lakeside cabin, so immersed in nature, you’ll return home with a renewed spring in your step. While away the days on the terrace loungers with your loved ones. Grill a fish on the barbecue, freshly caught that day in the lake that sparkles in front of you. Perhaps throw in some mushrooms that you foraged nearby that morning. This stuff is great for the soul. Indoors, expect ‘woodland cabin’ vibes with added polish. Beneath the high, wood panelled ceilings, a modern kitchen is stocked with everything you need. Throw some wood into the log burner and sink your toes into a fluffy rug after a day of exploring. Or head out to the sauna before cooling off in the lake for an evening swim. During the day, when not making use of the complimentary rowing boat or exploring the area, head to nearby Heinola for its shops and cafes. Or don’t. It’s very easy to stay put here and be at one with nature. 

Nature's Way

Perched on the sprawling banks of Lake Saimaa, this cabin has everything you might need for a tranquil getaway from the stresses of daily life. The timber-heavy interior sticks to a peaceful colour palette of neutrals and features a wood-burning fireplace to gather around when the night draws in. The large white kitchen complete with an island is pretty impressive, too. Stepping out the front door, there's a covered porch at the front of the house, which has a table and barbecue for dinner with a lakeside view. Closer to the water, there's a sauna outbuilding with a wood-burner stove, kitchenette and separate lounge. There's an additional sauna — an electric one — in the main home for good measure. With the largest lake in the country starting just metres away, you can rent standup paddleboards and boats with outboard motors from the host, as well as fatbikes to ride around the banks. Alternatively, why not take up the option of renting a mobile hot tub and gazing at the stars instead?

Forest Blanket

At first glance, this might seem like a charming, rustic wood cabin in a stunning lakeside setting – which it is. But head inside for a pleasingly unexpected vibe. We’re talking lavish interiors so polished and trendy you’ll think you stepped onto an Elle Decor shoot, but with added ‘hygge’. For every cool, white leather armchair there is a cosy rug to sink your toes into. For every insta-worthy light fitting, there is a candlestick or a huge open fireplace. The newly fitted kitchen comes fully equipped with everything you could possibly need. 

Take a glass of wine out to the front terrace and soak in the wood-fired outdoor bathtub, with lake Saimaa by your side – utter bliss. When you’re not gallivanting around the lake in your boat (included with the cabin), settle into the sauna. Then fire up the gas barbecue and grill a fish caught that day. This is as remote as they come, so make sure you stock up on supplies before you arrive. Then simply enjoy the peace and serenity. 

Luxe By The Lake

There's a timeless charm to this lakeside log cabin, overlooking the tranquil waters of Lake Saarijärvi. But while its looks speak of days gone by, the revamped interior shows off plenty of modern upgrades, from a home theatre setup to a sparkling new kitchen. Perfect for a family looking to spend some precious time in the great outdoors, what child could resist the ladder up to the loft bed in the second bedroom? And there are tennis courts, playing fields, a trampoline and more for them to enjoy nearby – shared with the surrounding cottages. Just a hop, skip and a jump from your doorstep, there's a traditional sauna cabin with its own dressing room and veranda. Then head off to fish in the lake, or enjoy a variety of add-on rentals, including paddle boards, skis and bike equipment. This is the perfect spot to get out there and explore this region's breathtaking scenery – it even comes with its own boat.

Timber Tangerine

If we were constructing a home in such an idyllic location, we would have done the same thing as the person behind this log cabin on the edge of Lake Saimaa did and put as many windows in as humanly possible. When it comes to views, there's no bad seat in the cabin, which was only built in 2020 and comes packed with modern, monochromatic furnishings. However, it's possible to get closer still to the natural beauty out through the glass doors. Here, guests can choose between sitting on the covered terrace, lounging on the pier or taking a perch around the fire pit area. It's also outside where the separate sauna outhouse is found. Powered by a wood-burning stove and using water pumped from the lake, there's also a dressing room in here and another huge window gazing out to the tranquil waters. After a morning sweat, borrow the rowboat and take a paddle around the lake. Alternatively, drive twenty-five minutes to Ruokolahden Freeski Ky and tackle the slopes.

Lakeside Lonkero

A lake right outside your home, views of the majestic surroundings, a sauna and an outdoor dining area with a barbecue grill sounds ideal to us. Boat rides on the water, pre-breakfast walks along the lakeside and afternoons on the pier with undisturbed hours of sunbathing is not a bad way to spend the day. Inside this typical wood-clad cabin you can cosy up on the sofa and watch TV while a fire crackles in the living room. There’s no forgetting the forest, even when you’re indoors, as a big bay window looks out into the trees. Unwind in the private sauna, and perhaps dunk into the lake to cool off after, proper Finnish style. The owner's farm next door has a farm shop for supplies and you can hire Shetland ponies for a fun day out with the kids.

Whether dining alfresco style, soaking in the hot tub, or exploring the calming waters of Saimaa Lake by rowing boat, we're sure this cabin will do wonders for your cortisol levels. It combines all the best bits of a cabin – instant cosiness factor, natural wood paneling, a reading nook with a working fireplace for finishing those holiday reads – while still feeling modern thanks to that enviable ceiling height and double-height windows, which frame those gorgeous views. Days not spent lounging about could consist of foraging among the beautiful flora that surrounds the house, seeking out the Salpa Line, or visiting nearby sites like Kerimäki, the largest wooden church in the world. With getaways like this on their doorstep, it's no wonder the Finns are consistently rated the happiest in the world.

Inside, this gloriously light and open cabin ticks all the boxes. The kitchen is well stocked so you can lay on a hearty spread after a day of adventuring, with the fire crackling by your side. The tall floor-to-ceiling glass frontage lets in bucket-loads of natural light – and more of that view. At bedtime, kids will love bundling into the den-like loft room, leaving you to unwind in your private, wood-heated sauna. Further afield, it’s a short drive to a public sandy beach the whole family can enjoy. What more could you need?
