Boasting stunning views over the picturesque wooded hillsides of the Massif des Maures, this stone farmhouse has lots of space inside and out. Two of the single beds are up on a mezzanine level and younger children may need supervision on some of the staircases. That said, the kitchen is well equipped for family meals, and pets are welcome to join you. Sun loungers surround the infinity pool, and the large garden has room for alfresco dining. There's plenty of peace and quiet here, so we think you'll want a car for trips to Saint-Tropez, Nice, and Cannes.

If we could give a home a pass based on location alone, this address would undoubtedly get one. Not only does it sit within the Verdon National Park and a five-minute drive from the truffle markets of Aups, but it has a prime view of the mountain peaks of Massif des Maures.

Thankfully, the villa has a lot more riding in its favour other than this wonderful position. For starters, it really spoils guests when it comes to outdoor space. As well as a pair of terraces from which to admire the scenery, there's a huge garden complete with a petanque court, playground and a fountain to enjoy. Best of all, there's a swimming pool that offers a refreshing spot in which to relax during baking hot afternoons.

Once a sheepfold in a former life, the home itself is imbued with rustic charm, filled as it is with wooden ceiling beams, terracotta tiles and handsome antique furnishings. The main bathroom was once an old pigeon house – not something you get to write all that often – but today it's the very vision of relaxation with its cast iron bathtub.

When you're in the mood to see more of this beautiful landscape, there are ample walking routes in the surrounding national park, as well as opportunities for everything from climbing, paragliding, canoeing, rafting and horseback riding. The shores of Lake of Sainte-Croix are only a short drive away if you fancy pootling about in a boat or splashing about in the invitingly blue waters.

We love the private pool, secret dining spots, and, of course, those views that stretch for miles. If they tempt you away from home, it’s a mere three kilometres down the mountain to Vence, where a host of French eateries await, or you can pop to the daily market for some local produce to cook at home.

Located in a charming resort, this is a comfortable 18th-century residence renovated in 2014. The property offers two apartments and is situated in a pedestrian area just 6km from the sea. The apartment is a modern and stylishly furnished 2-room apartment on two levels. The lower level features one room with a French bed and a shower/WC, while the upper level offers an open living/sleeping room with one bed, a dining table, satellite TV, international TV channels, and heating stove. The kitchen is fully equipped with a mini-oven, dishwasher, 4 induction hot plates, and electric coffee machine. Other amenities include WiFi internet access, washing machine, children's high chair, and baby cot. Guests can enjoy the scenic view from the balcony which has outdoor furniture for relaxation. A location like this deserves a unique and truly magical home. Off the beaten track, a ten-minute drive from the coast at San Lorenzo al Mare and half an hour from Imperia, it's set in a picture-perfect rural hamlet on a hillside. Surrounded by rolling hills and ancient olive groves, this place hasn't changed for centuries. In a building that dates from the 18th century, it actually comprises two apartments – a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom, set across four floors. Steep, narrow stairs lead up to the cool, whitewashed attic rooms or down to the converted cellars – bursting with character and authentic charm. The two flats have their own living spaces, and one boasts a small balcony while the other has a dining spot on a rooftop terrace. With hundreds of years of history in its walls, we love the rustic look of its vaulted ceilings, exposed beams and bare stone walls. But that's not to say this place is all about the past. You just need to look in the modern, stainless steel kitchens and admire the mix of antiques and contemporary furniture to see this home has all the comforts of modern-day living. Head to the nearby natural pools of Laghetti di Pietrabruna for a wild swim, buy local farm produce or drive to the beach – the choice is yours.

This contemporary apartment is all about the location for us. There’s secure parking here, but if you don’t fancy driving on holiday, a car isn’t necessary. Many local hotspots are within walking distance and Antibes train station is a mere five-minute stroll away for adventures further afield in the Côte d'Azur. Walk to Old Antibes, the Picasso Museum or Gravette beach – there’s something for everyone here. And when dinner is calling, head to Juan-les-Pins. A stroll down the seafront promenade, lined with French eateries, awaits.

Close to both the glitz and glamour of Cannes and the village of Montauroux, where fashion designer Christian Dior built a home, this country paradise is anything but provincial. Not that you’ve got any need to venture far from the villa. The scent of Provence’s lavender fields fill the air as you explore the four hectares of terraced gardens, take a swim in the outdoor pool, and end the day in the alfresco dining area. You’ll have a hard time tearing yourself away from this secluded spot for your journey home, never mind a day trip.

A ten minute walk away from the Cannes Marina jetty, this little home is set on a brightly coloured street and is as welcoming inside as it looks from the outside. Minimalist, definitely, but the crisp colour palette further allows the brightly coloured ‘Cannes’ artwork found around the home, to really pop. The large windows aren't just there to let the light stream in – although they certainly do it well – but to also allow you to throw them all open for that French Riviera goodness to funnel in. With the breeze for company, you might get the coffee brewing whilst others go out and find freshly baked pastries for breakfast, but if you’re thinking about dining out instead, L’Alba is a must. The restaurant is a six-minute walk away and sits right on the waterfront. After eating you might even be tempted to stroll the beach. 

Bars and restaurants are dotted all around this home actually, so you’ll never run out of options, but there’s also a shop – or the Forville market – to buy fresh produce if you’d rather try your hand at traditional French cuisine from the well-equipped kitchen back home. Whilst you’re out, swing by the marina and walk around twelve minutes to visit the Croisette casino. This is where you’ll also come across a seaside boulevard home to a film festival site. Explore the many beaches along the coastline, and if you’re up for a day trip, hop on the train and see more of the French Riviera.
