Not far from the Spanish border you’ll find Perpignan, a classified City of Art and History – thanks to its roots as a former Majorcan capital – and home to this eclectic apartment. It’s only fitting that the bold interior echoes elements of both Spanish and French flair as an ode to its surroundings. The result is a vibrant space that honours natural wood and rattan but also puts more opulent touches front and centre. 

Spend your time here unwinding with an early-morning coffee on the balcony or by reading on the sunny sofa. Gather around the kitchen island after lunch to pour the wine, snacking as you chat.

Originally built by a Cathar Lord, it’s now owned by a sculptor whose work is scattered across the grounds. The 86-square-metre Knights’ Hall with library was made for banquets, so bring your best mead and tuck into a mediaeval meal you’ll never forget. There’s also a separate 4-bedroom cottage on the grounds, which can be hired for an additional fee.

This incredible French home and its surroundings are a riot for the senses. This home ticks every box when it comes to fuss-free holiday homes. It’s small but perfectly formed, with a cosy living room that’s the heart of the home. Children will love sleeping on the mezzanine level, where they can have their own space while still being close to the grown-ups. 

The outside space here is sure to win over everyone, though. You’ll have access to the shared swimming pool, which is a dream to dive into on hot, sunny days. You can sunbathe alongside the pool, dipping a toe in every now and then, or choose to soak up the sun on one of two terraces. There’s shade aplenty if you’d rather curl up with a book and a lemonade, too. 

Plage de Matteille is less than a kilometre away, where you can splash in the shallows and build sandcastles. It’s also easy to stroll to the harbour promenade – it’s a lovely way to spend an evening. Hikers will be thrilled to be within reach of the trails up Massif de la Clape, which boasts some spectacular views. There’s something for everyone here.

Begin each day with a swing in the hanging egg chairs while you sip on a cappucino. Then, as the sun gets higher and the temperature rises, cool off in your stunning outdoor pool, or enjoy a spot of sunbathing on one of the poolside loungers. Grill up some French meats on your barbecue and tuck in at your shaded outdoor dining set. In the evenings, sit out on your outdoor lounge area with a sundowner, or cosy up with the TV and a movie.

Being located in the French countryside, you'll have many country rambles right on your doorstep, or venture further out with a drive to nearby Toulouse to explore museums, shops and restaurants.

A Modern Classic

Sitting on a pretty Provencal hilltop, this chateau doesn't waste this prime location. Step behind the formidable stone walls – some of which date back to the 12th century – and you're greeted with expansive rooms packed full of luxurious touches.

The arched windows and glass doors at the end of the open living room are nothing but generous when it comes to natural light, making for a lovely space in which to dine or lounge. Upstairs, the bedrooms and bathrooms are similarly lavish, especially the teak-wood four-poster beds and bathtub overlooking the outdoor space.

Speaking of which, the alfresco space at the address is pretty special, too. Overlooked by 800-year-old gargoyles, there's a small swimming pool lent a little tropicality from the neighbouring palm trees. The built-in charcoal barbecue makes it easy to whip up feasts in the summer months, as well.

When it comes to getting to know this famous region a little better, the local village of Aragon can be reached easily on foot and has some renowned restaurants for you to enjoy. To help you work up an appetite, there are lots of walking routes and outdoor activities to undertake in the nearby national parks, while La Franqui beach is only 65km away, too.

A modern, stylish and comfortable home in an enviable position, a little more than ten minutes walk from Les Angles' famous ski area, this place has bags of appeal. Over three floors, with its own ski storage room and views across the countryside all the way to the nearby Lac de Matemale and the mountains beyond, it's family-friendly and roomy enough for a large group.

We love the styling here, with its mix of stone floors, local timber and exposed stone. The living room has comfy sofas and a log burner to keep everyone toasty in the depth of winter, and there are a few decorative touches that may come as a quirky surprise (we love the bear in the living room and the ski mask mirror in the hall). A well-equipped, modern kitchen comes with everything you'll need and there's a dining table seating eight.

Elsewhere, bedrooms and bathrooms are all individual and smartly furnished – our favourite being the main bedroom with its partly open en-suite. And kids will no doubt love the bunk room. Close to the centre of the village, you'll be within walking distance of its shops and restaurants, with all the resort facilities at your fingertips.

The Picpoul is regularly recognised as one of the top ten wines in the Languedoc – and the château itself deserves a few awards. It’s beautifully renovated, with sleek modern furniture sitting happily against a backdrop of original stone. Take a dip in the pool, sip a cocktail by the grand piano. Heck, you might even want to get hitched in the chapel. The secluded home is four kilometres from the nearest town of Montagnac, and there are more than enough wineries dotted around the countryside – all the way to the Med.

Yes, this home in the middle of the Tarn countryside dates back to the 19th century and is surrounded by 32 hectares of idyllic meadows, but this isn't the rustic getaway you might assume from first impression. How could it be so when the list of amenities at guests' disposal is so impressive?

Given the rather enviable climate that this corner of South France enjoys, you probably won't be surprised to learn that many of these lie outside. The first one that's likely to grab your attention is the swimming pool, but wander around a bit more and you'll discover everything from a sauna and six-person Jacuzzi to a tennis court and bar in the poolhouse for afterwards.

The home itself still retains an air of grandeur – all high ceilings, parquet floors and chandeliers. There are plenty of large communal spaces in which to gather together, but a fair few more private spots to escape the group for a peaceful moment. Chief among them is the rather elegant freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

One thing you'll quickly appreciate here is just how tranquil the locale is, with even the nearest village sitting 6km away. The surrounding area is peppered with charming towns and scenic hillside walking routes, while Toulouse is only 55km away, too.

The well-designed interiors reflect the Catalan heritage, and the building benefits from ground-floor bedrooms and en-suites. Outside living is where this home shines – whether you want to unwind by the swimming pool, explore the gardens or enjoy a glass of Byrrh, a local aperitif on the terrace. The location suits those eager to explore the woodland, but the beaches aren't too far away either. 

Pyrenees Spirit 

There's something truly magical about this home's location in the listed Occitane village of Laurac. As well as being so isolated as to bring a pleasing sense of tranquillity, the hilltop position means that there are lovely views of verdant countryside from the terraces.

Speaking of which, the address benefits from two such standout outdoor spaces. On the second floor, glass doors open out to an alfresco dining area complete with a barbecue and a glorious panorama, while back down at the ground and thirty metres' walk from the home, there's a secret garden with a swimming pool surrounded by vegetation.

It's plain to see that a big chunk of your time here is going to be spent out in the open air, but you'll also be happy to hear that the interior doesn't disappoint when you finally retreat indoors. There's a rustic feel to the design, with large ceiling beams sitting above a traditional fireplace and smart wooden floors. That being said, it doesn't feel dated in the slightest – the kitchen is a modern update on the country-style quarters found in many of the region's properties.

When it comes to filling up an itinerary, the rural surroundings and wealth of routes can be explored on foot or horseback, or by bike or kayak. The medieval architecture in the town of Carcassonne only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car, too.

Just a short drive from the fishing town of Sète, this is the perfect setting for families and friends to share the magic of seaside living. With its modern design and elegant styling, this is the kind of space that feels rejuvenating. From the moment you wake up, you’ll want to pause and savour the details that make this home special. Like watching the sunrise from the terrace or enjoying your morning coffee in the peaceful garden.

This is a stunning, modern villa located amidst picturesque vineyards on the outskirts of the medieval village of Caunes-Minervois. The villa boasts air conditioning, a heated pool, and panoramic views of the Pyrenees. The surroundings are ideal for cycling and walking, and guests can explore nearby attractions such as Carcassonne and Minerve. The villa features an elongated terrace with a sitting area, dining table, and plancha grill. The lounge is spacious and beautifully decorated with large glass windows, comfortable seating, and a flat-screen TV that can double as a virtual painting. The dining table is made from one piece of a tree and invites guests to enjoy long meals. There are four bedrooms, each with air conditioning, and two extra single beds can be added upon request for a fee. Two bedrooms have private bathrooms, while the other two share a bathroom. A sustainable heating system has been installed in the villa's floors to ensure guests' comfort during their stay.

We can't think of many things better than living right on the beachfront of the French Mediterranean coast. Sitting four floors up with a spectacular panoramic view of the breakers, this effortlessly chic, modern home adds a slice of luxury to beach holidays. Inside, there’s everything you need to relax and unwind, from the colourful sofa and stylish wicker chairs to the tasteful bedrooms with their large windows that welcome in the morning sunlight. But our favourite spot has be the grand, sweeping balcony that directly overlooks the beach and the vast sea. From here, gaze out towards the horizon as you sip a sundowner cocktail with your favourite people, or enjoy dinner in the lukewarm night air. The hub for beach activities is directly over the road, so whether you want to go swimming, kayaking or windsurfing in the balmy Med, you'll be in the water in minutes. If you can tear yourself away from the sandy shores, a half-hour car ride will get you to Perpignan, loved for its renowned cultural scene and wide array of restaurants and bars.

Le Panorama de la Mer

This winemaker's abode from the early 20th century preserves many of its original features. Crafted in local stone, the ground floor bears marks of the century old wine tanks. Other quirky details include bar-stools, lamps and wardrobes salvaged from French cruise ships and a well-fitted vintage gaming den. A typical day here involves sipping wines at the local vineyards followed by visits to quaint boutiques, morning markets and galleries of Pézenas. If you can ever get enough of the festivities and street music of the village, there's a whole different world to explore. While the nearby beaches of Cap d’Agade and Marseillan Plage have gorgeous coastlines lined with delicious sea-food haunts, the rivers are a hot-bed for swimming, fishing, biking and water-sports. We don't debate that it can take up all your summer to simply scratch the surface of Languedoc. However, it would be a missed opportunity to not include a day trip to the walled city of Carcassone while you're here.

Wine Merchant

Small but mighty and offering many of the mod-cons that you could need for a quiet, restful stay in Les Angles – a picturesque part of the sweeping Pyrénées-Orientales mountain range offering walking and biking trails in the summer, and excellent skiing opportunities in winter – this compact, timber-clad holiday apartment reminds us of a cosy bird's nest tucked away in the area's hilly landscape. 

Whilst the wood-panelled double bedroom is brought to life with quirky design touches and exudes a uniquely alpine charm, the kitchen/living area provides the perfect place to join as a group and spend some quality time together. Indeed, the close quarters, unfussy interior, and lack of extravagant amenities mean that this home is all about two simple pleasures – reconnecting with loved ones and realigning yourself with nature.

Amble through the town of Les Angles, stopping for a bite in one of its authentic restaurants – which, thanks to its positioning close to the border, consists of a delicious blend of French and Spanish flavours packed into hearty fare for mountainous terrain. Or, why not treat yourself to an afternoon at the Angléo Spa, just 600 metres away from the apartment? 

If you fancy getting out of town and into some of the spectacular scenery that surrounds you, then take the journey of just under four kilometres to the beautiful Lake Matemale – which is known for its range of summertime watersports as well as fantastic hiking around its perimeter.

The Finch's Nest

This beachfront apartment will have you glowing from dawn till dusk. The open-plan kitchen, living room and dining area are bathed in natural light coming in through large French doors, so to stay here is to move in to a vibrant, sociable space to prepare meals, play games, and whip up cocktails – complete with sun-kissed balcony to enjoy them on. The design and furniture nod to the sea with aquatic motifs, sleek blue seating, glass top table and polished silver flooring. When you’re not basking in the sun on your balcony, lazy days are best spent on Argelès Beach mere steps from your door. The place is a short walk from numerous shops, restaurants, and museums and a thirty-minute drive from Marseillan Plage Beach. Inside the abode are four air-conditioned bedrooms, including the main sleeping quarters with an en-suite bathroom. Outside, you’ll find a heated swimming pool, a terrace for dining, and a seating area for enjoying a sundowner or two.

Straight out of a belle époque style painting is this large chateau not far from Toulouse and big enough for the entire extended family. With views of the neighbouring vineyards from the home’s balconies, you will feel truly immersed in the grape harvest at the right time of year. Eat breakfast on the veranda while the kids float in the pool and enjoy days walking in the heart of wine country. Cycle into to nearby Gaillac for fresh cheese to enjoy with wine on the terrace and various herbs collected from the garden. The wildlife you can spot on the property was a highlight for us. Keep your eyes peeled for roe deer in the morning and listen for nightingales to sing you to sleep.
