Carantec is a lovely part of France, and staying in this home makes it all the more lovely. This charming home can be found just a one-minute walk from Plage de la Grève Blanche, where you can stroll along the shore skimming stones and paddling in the shallows. 

When you return home from the beach, with the salt sea air in your hair, you might sit out in the garden to enjoy the last of the day’s sunshine. The courtyard is best early in the morning, when you can revel in the peace and quiet of this home. We love the terrace in the evenings – fire up the barbecue to grill locally caught fresh fish and pop open a bottle of wine. We could merrily while away hours in this way, spending time with loved ones and feeling the stresses of everyday life drift away on the sea breeze. 

Inside, you’ll find a tranquil haven. Neutral hues blend with cosy, soft furnishings and natural wood shades. The living and dining space is utterly serene, the perfect place to unwind. We particularly love the main bedroom with its four-poster bed and ocean vistas (there's also an office area here if you want to write a travel blog or catch up on work). The highlight, though, for us, is the private garden area around the apartment – you have a terrace and garden furniture for alfresco meals – it's a great space overlooking the Grande Plage, as well as the Pointe de la Garde.

Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons. If you fancy exploring further afield, then Cape Fréhel, to the west, is perfect for bird watchers, or the nearby charming resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo has a small port and coastal paths.

We can easily see why Layers Upon Layers was chosen as one of the best homes for breaks in France in 2016 — it's typical French countryside home with oodles of charm and plenty of amenities that will help you make lifelong memories. The interior has been furnished with gorgeous furniture that give it a rather retro-rustic atmosphere, and the host is keen on restoring period features, so that you can immerse yourself into the spirit of rural France. Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. When you've had your fill of sights for the day, return to your holiday residence and try out a new recipe, or get the charcoal barbecue going in the garden. After a nice meal, treat yourself to some local wine and organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV that's equipped with Freeview.

With nods to its history through exposed beams and brickwork, this recently renovated home has been beautifully modernised, while retaining its charm. The sleek, modern kitchen is a delight to cook in, should you decide an evening at home is preferred over dining out. Climb the spiral staircase and you’ll find two comfortable bedrooms to choose from, both of which guarantee a blissful night’s sleep. A fairly neutral palette is broken up throughout the home with pops of colour, giving the whole space a calming, cosy vibe.

Our favourite part of this home is the terrace. Quite the sun trap during the day, it’s a peaceful place to retreat to as evening sets in. This apartment boasts an exceptional location in the heart of Rennes, on the square facing Saint Pierre Cathedral. Set on the third floor of a beautiful 19th century building complete with stained glass windows, the apartment is full of old world charm. High ceilings, wooden parquet floors, and ornate fireplaces characterise the space, which is bathed in natural light thanks to the tall windows. Each of the bedrooms is tastefully decorated, with comfortable beds and hotel quality sheets. There's a desk in the kids room in case you need to squeeze in some work. There’s a vivid kitchen for preparing dinners with the produce you picked up from Marché de Saint-Servan, and after a day perusing the promenade and touring Saint-Vincent Cathedral of Saint-Malo, you’ll look forward to a blissful night’s sleep in the soft and stylish bedrooms. 

Saint Malo’s pristine sand beaches are just a short stroll away – grab a flaky pastry from your local boulangerie before enjoying a morning swim. At the golden hour, sample a couple of locally-caught oysters and a glass of Muscadet overlooking the bobbing boats in the port.

This lovely home is a real delight. It was recently renovated, and has been beautifully decorated – you can tell how much love has gone into this home. Hues of green and jade run throughout the decor, resulting in a soothing vibe. When you’re on holiday, you want to be able to relax in style, and that’s just what you can do here. 

The stunning monochrome kitchen is a great place to begin your day, whether you’re simply preparing coffee or whipping up a feast. Everything you might need has been considered here, so cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore. When everyone is seated around the dining table, you’ll see why this home is so popular with families and groups of friends – there’s plenty of room for everyone to gather together. 

If the sun is shining, you’ll want to be outside. Lie out on a sun lounger to top up your Vitamin D, or dive right into the heated swimming pool. The south-facing terrace is a wonderful spot, looking out over the lush gardens – we’d be tempted to fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. You’re close to the coast so the seafood is great – the scallops from the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in particular are divine.

If you're a fan of history, you'll love just how much history is in store for you at this fifteenth-century château. Surrounded by seven acres of private land, there are plenty of games to be played and trails to be explored. There's also a badminton set, billiards and a ping-pong table, which means the kids will be entertained for days. When you're ready to explore the surrounding scenery, the beaches at Plestin Les Greves are guaranteed to make you fall in love with the area.

La Rivière

We fell hard for this characterful home not far from the St Lunaire coastline and we're pretty sure other guests will be just as smitten. A lot of that is down to the design. Much of it is contemporary in scope, from the minimalist kitchen and stark white walls to the bare wooden floors and the chic selection of furnishings. However, there are a few features that hark back to the past, like the large cabinets filled with curios and the vintage wall signs.

One of our favourite parts of the home, however, is just how bright it feels – that's what'll happen if you fill the walls with large windows, skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass doors. If you want to feel the sun directly on your skin, you only have to step outside onto one of the pair of terraces, which have both loungers and an alfresco dining table for making the most of sunny weather.

If you're lucky with the forecast, you'll probably want to make the most of the fact that St Lunaire's main beach is less than a kilometre away and there are a few more along this stretch of Breton coastline to explore. The centre of town is just as close when you want restaurants and shops, but there's a greater variety in the Dinard, only a short drive away.

Past, Present, Future

Stay at this 19th century chateau in the Loire valley for an experience of history and extravagance. Large enough for family gatherings and celebrations with friends, the home is grandiose both inside and out. Built by a nobleman two centuries ago, this chateau has been restored to perfection and the grounds are just as impressive and magnificent in terms of upkeep and scale. Spend days cycling around the property. Let the kids fish in the lake or dip in the pool, and marvel at the animals on site. For the adults, book a tennis lesson or in-house massage in the drawing room and enjoy that French joie de vivre topped off with local food and wine. Look out for shooting stars and promise to all meet again at this property in the future (you wouldn’t be the first).
