You can never go wrong if you book a whole chateau, which is why Sezanne Pond is such a lovely place to gather all your loved ones. Among the many services provided by the lovely host team, the fact that you can get an English-speaking guide to take you around is one of our favourites, but we can't say that we didn't love the fact that we booked maid service and released even more time in our day to do absolutely nothing. As this home used to be a retirement home back int the day, it has a lift for the luggage, which is another one of the small details that Sezanne Pond does absolutely right. Of course you get the standard luxuries — a large private pool, antique furniture fit for nobility, huge gardens where you can walk and reflect, a salon with a grand piano and a pool table, lots if spots to relax and read, and more. Within a few minutes' drive, rustic towns await, and we hope you take some time to explore this beautifully historic landscape and bring some local wine back to your chateau.

This twelfth-century chateau in the Belgian countryside is quite simply enormous. Not only does it sit within ten hectares of pretty private parkland, but it can also accommodate a whopping thirty-five guests across the building and its two wings.

With all of this size to play around with, the host has ensured that every guest will find something that will appeal to them. The parquet flooring, original panelling, parquet flooring and open fireplaces mean that the living rooms are wonderful spots to do nothing more but relax, while the garden, courtyards and dining terrace also offer somewhere equally pleasant to sit and enjoy the sunshine.

In addition to this, you'll find a recently built Finnish sauna in the home, plus a games room complete with a bar and billiards tables. If that gets you in the sporting mood, there's an all-weather tennis court on the grounds, as well as a private lake, which you can use for fishing, canoeing or even swimming.

The closest town is Ciney, which takes about five minutes to reach in the car and has a handful of shops and restaurants. A little further afield, there's everything from caves, Roman ruins and outdoor activities to keep you occupied.

If you’re itching to get outdoors, the nearby National Nature Reserve of La Bassée is a must-see, where an abundance of fauna and flora await. For those who love a little history, a visit to the mediaeval city of Provins, a Unesco World Heritage Site, promises a memorable day out. Further afield, Paris is only an hour away, should you fancy a visit to the city of love. 

Closer to home, there are some fantastic hikes from and near Gouaix. After expending some energy, return to your cosy retreat, uncork a bottle of fabulous French wine, and relax with loved ones as you reminisce over the day.

Wander the streets and observe the striking Baroque and Art Nouveau buildings complete with ornate features - northeastern France is truly an architecture lover's paradise. There are plenty of local shops and eateries to visit too, whether you’re craving a decadent French dinner or want to take some nibbles back home.

When you’re not out and about exploring, this home offers plenty of ways to relax. This enormous chateau in the Burgundy countryside has quite a fascinating backstory. It was built in 1900 and gifted to a French actress by her lover before it was sold to the Red Cross and used as a war hospital. Today, it's the spot for a rather sumptuous getaway.

The interior is full of grand features, from the long dining table in the orangery and high-ceilinged living room to the library and impressive hallway. You might also notice some more recent additions, such as the home cinema set-up and spa-worthy bathrooms.

Outside, too, has some rather inviting features, chief among them the heated swimming pool surrounded by loungers. When you're finished taking a dip, there's plenty more to discover in the four acres of grounds, including a fishing pond and a shared tennis and basketball court.

However you choose to fill your days, the chateau's rural location will ensure you can do it in the utmost tranquillity. There are lots of walking routes that start nearby and Morvan National Park lies under half an hour's drive away. The town of Epinac only takes ten minutes in the car to reach and offers a restaurant, bakery, grocery and butchers.

If you passed this nondescript townhouse on one of Baune's historic side streets, you wouldn't guess there's a hidden stone-walled wine cellar on its lower level. But that's exactly what you can expect from this unique home in the Burgundy wine region, formerly featured in The Times.

Built in the 17th century, the spacious house retains charming original details – from the exposed wooden beams to the curved sash windows. But your host has updated it with striking sculptures and graphic wall art, as well as comfortable furniture so you can kick back and relax after a day of exploring. 

You can't leave this home without arranging a tasting in the romantic candle-lit cellar, where an expert will introduce you to the area's finest wines. We're labelling this spot as the dream honeymoon location. Once you've had a taste of the flavourful wine, you'll likely want to see where it comes from. Get out into the countryside and enjoy a tour of nearby vineyards, arranged by your host to make your stay extra special.

Nearby vineyards can be visited by bike or on foot, but we recommend having a car here for day trips – Dijon and the Parc Naturel Regional du Morvan are easily accessible by car.

There's two Disney Parks, as well as a golf course and Disney Village to discover. If you want to explore the City of Light – it's just over a ten-minute walk to Val d'Europe station, on the RER A-line, with a forty-minute ride into the centre of Paris. There are plenty of shops and restaurants nearby too. Back at this home. Relax on the lovely sunny and secluded terrace with a cup of coffee or unwind on the turquoise sofa in the bright living space. Later whip up a cassoulet in the kitchen and enjoy a family meal at your dining table. After a busy day, unwind in the bath or have evening drinks on the patio before starting another exciting day.

This renovated barn in the Burgundy countryside is a twenty-minute drive from the charming town of Beaune. The hosts, Laura and Peter, have kitted the place out with all the creature comforts you’ll need for an unforgettable break. There’s a sauna available in the autumn and winter, a garden for refreshments alfresco and a bar for sampling the region’s best wines. At capacity, two guests will sleep on a sofa bed, which may not be ideal if you’re planning an extended stay.

Just metres from the shore of Lac Bouzey, this charming two-bedroom cabin offers an idyllic family-friendly gateway to the low-lying mountains of the Vosges in eastern France.

Its open-plan interior is light and airy thanks to south-facing sliding doors with picturesque lake views and easy access to a private deck. It is equipped with an outdoor dining set and an indulgent Jacuzzi for relaxing out in nature. Back inside, the kitchen is kitted out with everything you need to fry up family feasts, while the two bedrooms are decorated in soothing blue and lavender tones – mirroring the colours of the lake's summer season.

Lovers of the great outdoors will appreciate the opportunity to get out on the water on a sailboat or paddleboard, supervised swimming over the summer months and plenty of hiking and biking trails through the surrounding countryside. 

The cabin is located on the outskirts of the quiet commune of Sanchey and a short drive from the historic, leafy town of Épinal. We'd suggest parking up and exploring its pretty central square, magical old quarter and medieval ruins on foot before heading further east to the breathtaking Ballon des Vosges.

We love this charming single-level holiday home because it encompasses the best of both worlds. Though it is situated near Nancy's centre, allowing guests to make the most of the varied shopping, dining, and cultural offerings therein, it also feels tranquil and secluded – due in part to the small wooded area at the rear of the property. There you will also find a seating area perfect for long summer evenings spent in the company of friends and family. 

While the home's exteriors have a traditional French aesthetic typical of the Alsace-Lorraine area, step inside and you'll find cool and versatile interiors – think funky furniture, design-forward wallpaper, and quirky artwork adorning the walls. One of our favourite features has got to be the sleek shower rooms. Finished in a chic floor-to-ceiling grey marble, lending the room an upscale if somewhat trendy industrial feel, this space is perfect for a bit of pampering before a day – or an evening – spent exploring the highlights of Nancy.

From the Palais Ducal with its archetypal fairytale vibes to the beautifully ornate Basilique Saint-Epvre or the popular Parc de la Pépinière and its fragrant rose garden, not to mention the wealth of cultural attractions including the National Opera and the Fine Arts Museum, there is so much to fall in love with in and around the historic centre of this city. The traditional house stands across from the village square – you can watch the comings and goings of the locals from your terrace. Each morning, you need only take a few steps to buy fresh bread and pastries from the boulangerie, which you can devour on the terrace – we love dining alfresco on holiday. In the evening, you might cook on the barbecue, or for special occasions make a reservation at the Michelin-starred restaurant just down the road. 

The cottage blends historic charm with stylish decor. You can look forward to seeing the original parquet flooring, exposed stone walls and wooden beams, alongside some modern touches that make your stay all the more comfortable. After a day spent cycling around nearby vineyards, it feels glorious to sink into the master suite’s deep bathtub – pour yourself a glass of wine to take your relaxation to the next level.

The open plan dining area is an idyllic spot to spend quick breakfasts with coffee and croissants you picked up from the boulangerie Au Fournil de Jade Abdelkader, just five minutes walk, as well as candlelit dinners made with your market haul selection from Halles de Wazemmes, a fourteen-minute drive or twenty minutes if you’re optioning for the metro. 

Explore the Flanders capital’s distinctive Baroque architecture, its old town, Vieux Lille, and the former coal-mining site which is now the contemporary, Musée du Louvre-Lens. For dinner, stop into Le Présentoir for their seasonal delights and natural wines - our pick is a seat at the banquette with the oxtail terrine.

Located in the middle of the Burgundy countryside, there's been a building on this site for around two centuries, something you might be able to tell from the wooden beams, flagstone flooring and thick stone walls. However, it's no longer a humble barn, but a luxurious French getaway.

In the intervening two hundred years, plenty has been added to aid in this transformation. Outside, the most notable change has been the building of a heated swimming pool in the middle of the lush grounds and even more recently — in 2021, in fact — a walled garden has been constructed holding over twenty types of herbs and soft fruits. If you time your visit just right, you might be able to pick cherries and grapes straight off the branch.

When the weather's being kind, there's everything from a boules court and swing to a barbecue on the terrace with outdoor speakers to enjoy. If, however, the clouds are ominously grey, you can keep yourselves occupied on the billiards table or home cinema setup instead.

The nearest village is only twenty-five minutes away on foot and offers all the charming bakeries, charcuteries and markets you could want. As well as that, the unspoilt Morvan Regional Nature Park that surrounds the address means the local area is perfect for long walks or cycle rides. If that sounds too tame, the Magny Cours circuit — a French Grand Prix venue — is only forty minutes' drive away.

The grounds are equally as lavish, with 15 acres of private deer field parkland, a swimming pool and cottages dotted around the grounds. Nearby Beaune isn't short of activities to choose from, with helicopter rides, golf and hot air ballooning, to name but a few, plus a rich cultural and historical heritage to discover and enjoy.

Le Parc aux Cerfs

Nestled on the border of the 12th and 20th arrondissements, this home offers you the chance to explore the quieter side of Paris. Spend each day as a true local – browse fresh produce at the Cours de Vincennes market on Wednesdays and Saturdays, wander the tree-lined paths of the Bois de Vincennes, and visit local cafes and boutiques in quaint Charonne. And when you're ready to hit the main sights, the city centre is just a fifteen-minute subway ride away. This cosy apartment has just enough space for two to unwind – and we imagine the kitchen might come in handy after your trip to the market.

You’ll be close to Place de la Nation and Parc Floral de Paris, with transport links that make it as easy as can be to explore the rest of Paris. The apartment is bright and welcoming, with tall windows, a petite terrace, and chic decor. It’s tranquil and charming, ideal for business and leisure travellers.

The 20th arrondissement is home to Parisian locals and the Père Lachaise Cemetery, where you can pay your respects to artists such as Oscar Wilde and Jim Morrison. You'll sleep well in the cosy bedroom, and there's plenty of wardrobe space to settle in properly. The kitchen isn't massive, but it's big enough to rustle up something after a long day of sightseeing. Naturally, you'll want to see Paris' iconic sights during your stay – there's a metro stop just down the road.
