In fact, there are sea views to enjoy from most rooms. The highlight, though, for us, is the private garden area around the apartment – you have a terrace and garden furniture for alfresco meals – it's a great space overlooking the Grande Plage, as well as the Pointe de la Garde.

Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons. If you fancy exploring further afield, then Cape Fréhel, to the west, is perfect for bird watchers, or the nearby charming resort of Saint-Cast-le-Guildo has a small port and coastal paths.

This lovely home is a real delight. It was recently renovated, and has been beautifully decorated – you can tell how much love has gone into this home. Hues of green and jade run throughout the decor, resulting in a soothing vibe. When you’re on holiday, you want to be able to relax in style, and that’s just what you can do here. 

The stunning monochrome kitchen is a great place to begin your day, whether you’re simply preparing coffee or whipping up a feast. Everything you might need has been considered here, so cooking is a pleasure rather than a chore. When everyone is seated around the dining table, you’ll see why this home is so popular with families and groups of friends – there’s plenty of room for everyone to gather together. 

If the sun is shining, you’ll want to be outside. Lie out on a sun lounger to top up your Vitamin D, or dive right into the heated swimming pool. The south-facing terrace is a wonderful spot, looking out over the lush gardens – we’d be tempted to fire up the barbecue for a dinner under the stars. You’re close to the coast so the seafood is great – the scallops from the Bay of Saint-Brieuc in particular are divine.

A stone's throw from the sandy beaches of Cancale, in the picture-pretty bay of Port Mer, this charming home offers the very best of coastal living. Boasting a gorgeous garden with plenty of cosy spots to sit down and breathe in the salty sea air, start your days with coffee on the lawn while watching the boats sail by. 

If you want to see the ocean up close, the beach is less than 1km away – take a walk down to the golden sands to discover what the famous Emerald Coast has to offer. When you're feeling peckish, Cancale oysters are a must-try. Head to one of the local restaurants or buy some from the Mont Saint-Michel oyster market and take them home to prepare yourself. We highly recommend an alfresco dinner on the terrace, washed down with a glass of French wine. When you're finished, head up to the terrace to watch the sunset – the waterfront views have to be seen to be believed. 

When darkness falls, head inside to cuddle up on the sumptuous sofa to watch a movie. If you're travelling with little ones, the mezzanine level dens are the perfect place for a bedtime story to make sure they settle in for a good night's sleep.

This pretty half-timbered house from the 17th century is located right in the heart of the fairytale-esque Breton town of Dinan and comfortably accommodates up to four guests in its quirky, lovingly-decorated interior that boast its own unique character.

We can easily see why Layers Upon Layers was chosen as one of the best homes for breaks in France in 2016 — it's typical French countryside home with oodles of charm and plenty of amenities that will help you make lifelong memories. The interior has been furnished with gorgeous furniture that give it a rather retro-rustic atmosphere, and the host is keen on restoring period features, so that you can immerse yourself into the spirit of rural France. Meneac is far from a ghost town even outside of the tourist season, making it a great destination year-round, but there are plenty of interesting villages and castles to explore in the area. When you've had your fill of sights for the day, return to your holiday residence and try out a new recipe, or get the charcoal barbecue going in the garden. After a nice meal, treat yourself to some local wine and organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV that's equipped with Freeview.

During spells of warm weather, guests can while away the hours on the loungers and dining table on the terrace, or even play games on the large lawn. When you finally head inside, you're sure to be instantly struck by the minimalist interior. Large windows and glass doors invite in bountiful amounts of natural light and this is accentuated by the stark white walls and shiny wooden floors. This home is ideal for family living, thanks to a private, south-facing garden with plenty of room for playing in, plus a balcony complete with dining table for those all-important family brunches. Spend a leisurely morning sipping coffee on the terrace before heading to Fréhel's nautical centre for a spot of surfing the waves, exploring lagoons via paddle board or even boating across the Atlantic Ocean via catamaran.

We fell hard for this characterful home not far from the St Lunaire coastline and we're pretty sure other guests will be just as smitten. A lot of that is down to the design. Much of it is contemporary in scope, from the minimalist kitchen and stark white walls to the bare wooden floors and the chic selection of furnishings. However, there are a few features that hark back to the past, like the large cabinets filled with curios and the vintage wall signs.

One of our favourite parts of the home, however, is just how bright it feels – that's what'll happen if you fill the walls with large windows, skylights and floor-to-ceiling glass doors. If you want to feel the sun directly on your skin, you only have to step outside onto one of the pair of terraces, which have both loungers and an alfresco dining table for making the most of sunny weather.

If you're lucky with the forecast, you'll probably want to make the most of the fact that St Lunaire's main beach is less than a kilometre away and there are a few more along this stretch of Breton coastline to explore. The centre of town is just as close when you want restaurants and shops, but there's a greater variety in the Dinard, only a short drive away.

A serene spot on the beachfront in Saint-Malo, this seaside escape invites guests to make ever-lasting memories in delightfully blissful conditions. Built in 1906, you'll be just metres away from the sandy shores of le Grande Plage. With direct beach access via the stairs in front of the villa, from here, you're encouraged to meditate, do yoga, or relax while taking in the stunning blue views with a cup of tea in hand. Inside the beach villa, classic and nautical designs present a home bursting with character. We love the antique furniture pieces which add traditional French charm with bags of elegance. 

Thanks to its on-point location, you can enjoy scenic beach walks, rollerblading or cycling on the seawall. There's also a surf school just 200 metres away, and if actively participating in watersports isn't your thing, the beach's kitesurfers, windsurfers or surfers will guarantee an excellent show. Meanwhile, a mini-market and the many nearby restaurants offer an endless opportunity to sample the local Brittany delicacies and fresh seafood in Saint-Malo.

If you're after a comfortable and stylish place to call home while exploring the beautiful Brittany coastline, then look no further than this family-size house with everything needed for an endlessly relaxing stay. Located on the outskirts of Saint-Briac, you're a short walk from several sandy beaches and outstanding golf courses, while being just 1.5 kilometres from the town centre, full of charm and character, with granite houses, small cobbled streets, bakeries, shops, and seafood restaurants. 

Architecturally, it's a stunning design and we love how the owners have made use of the space. With the double-vaulted ceiling, skylights, and floor-to-ceiling windows making the home wonderfully inviting and open. Whether you're cooking in the contemporary kitchen, mapping out the daily plans around the dining table, or enjoying your holiday read in the cosy living area, it's all in one space so you can really make the space into your own social sanctuary. 

The star of the show is the large decked terrace outside, complete with seating and a barbecue for alfesco meals in the sunshine. When it's time to head out, walk to the pristine sand of Plage Du Bechet or Plage De La Salinette, and enjoy fun-filled days sunbathing and swimming. 

Pure & Simple

Sitting within the winding network of historic streets in the Intra-Muros neighbourhood of Saint-Malo, you couldn't ask for a better spot in the Brittany seaside town. Everything from Eventail beach to the cathedral lies within walkable distance, while there's even a rather peaceful view of the English Channel – or La Manche, depending on your disposition – out through the window. 

The apartment itself is humbly sized, sure, but we're impressed by the simple and contemporary design found behind the front door. White walls and smart wooden floors are a timeless combo, while the furnishings, lighting and artwork selection are subtle and unshowy – and all the more chic for it. It's the sort of space that's sure to give you a bit of inspo for when you're next doing up your home address.

As mentioned, you don't have to venture far to find some of Saint-Malo's big sights, but once you've exhausted the small town – which might take longer than you think – you can catch a ferry over to Dinard on the other side of La Rance for more beaches and historic architecture.

This home in Saint-Malo is full of classic charm, with large picture windows, rustic floorboards and exposed beams. Mixed in delicately alongside all of these stunning features, you’ll find some unintrusive modern touches. A lovely little sun room and terrace provides the perfect spot for some quiet time. Grab a coffee and a book and enjoy a little peace as the sun warms you. When it’s time to catch up with your loved ones, the open-plan living, kitchen and dining area gives plenty of space for everyone to gather over good food, fine wine, and enjoy great conversation. 

Head outdoors into the garden and it’s quite the sun trap. Settle down on the comfortable deckchairs and enjoy the scent of the sea in the air. When it tempts you enough, it’s just a short 300-metre stroll to the nearest beach. For those keen to get out on the water, you’ll also find a sailing school just twenty minutes away by foot. With much to do in the area, this home provides an elegant backdrop to what promises to be a wonderful stay.

Exuding calm, you will feel the ambience before you even enter. Soft cream stone and white shutters set the scene for the beauty that resides indoors. The moss green chaise centrepiece is where you may kick your slippers off and pop your feet up for an evening in front of the open fireplace. Whilst you’ll be residing in this serene rural area, you’ll smell the salt water with the beaches only 2km away. Close to the village centre and quaint shops, you’ll have plenty to entertain you across the Emerald Coast.

Set across two floors with an adjoining self-contained apartment, you’ll find an abundance of space to relax and savour the simple pleasures of coastal living. Even though this large home sits in the middle of a golf course in rural Brittany, there's plenty to keep guests occupied even if they're not keen followers of the sport.

Take the wonderful wellness space, for example. Surrounded by large windows that look out to the peaceful grounds, there's both a heated swimming pool and a Jacuzzi to recline in once you've done a length or two. If that sounds a little too sedate, there's a huge range of games, from foosball and ping-pong to a petanque court and an arcade machine on which you'll find over 1500 video games. We're not saying you'll be praying for rainy days, but they won't be the catastrophe they might be at other addresses.

At the same time, the huge garden offers lots of space and equipment for enjoying spells of sunny weather. You can embrace a French tradition on the petanque court, bounce about on the trampoline or do nothing more strenuous than read on the terrace – perhaps with dinner cooking away on the barbecue in the background.

We should also mention that the home – once a farmhouse in a former life – is a pleasing mix of rustic and contemporary aspects, with wooden ceiling beams and a few patches of exposed stonework sitting quite happily alongside stark white walls, bold artwork and a super-sleek minimalist kitchen.

When it comes to seeing a little more of this corner of France, there's a good selection of spots that are a short drive away. The seaside towns of Saint-Malo and Dinard are a quarter of an hour away by car for instance, while both Rennes and Mont Saint Michel take around forty minutes to reach.

The local village of Plumaudan is picturesque and a quiet location to spend your days. If you’re planning to travel further afield, we’d recommend a visit to the mediaeval town of Dinan, just 12 kilometres away, where you can stroll around the port, enjoy a spot of lunch or even rent a boat if a day on the water tickles your fancy.

We also recommend a visit to the centre of the city, a quick drive away, to soak up the local culture. Dine in an authentic seafront restaurant and sip a local beer overlooking the waves.
