Enjoy your creation al fresco with the sounds of nature for company.

While you're in the area, why not treat yourself to a tour of local vineyards? This region is home to some of the country's finest wineries, after all. Cahors on the River Lot is just half an hour away – saunter through the manicured gardens and take home a bottle of the town's famously rich red wine.

Roses & Stone

This home is bursting with French rustic charm. The picturesque private grounds are perfect for family championships of badminton, table tennis and cricket. And parents can rest easy knowing the grounds are walled, so children can explore safely. We especially love the life-size chess set and large aquamarine pool on the adjoining grounds. The friendly owner lives next door to this home and is an excellent chef, so sit back and relax as you dine on an al-fresco French feast with the region’s famous truffles and wine from the local vineyards.

En Passant

Owned by two sisters with five children between them, it's fair to say your hosts know a thing or two about creating a family-friendly getaway. With its generous layout, relaxed atmosphere and wide selection of outdoor spaces – including a heated pool, three acres of fenced garden, swings and a well-equipped games room – for those who like the idea of letting their children roam free, this six-bedroom home could be a perfect choice.

Inside, you'll uncover an abundance of French rustic charm, with plenty of period features. Grand fireplaces, sparkling chandeliers and gnarled beams sit untouched since the home's halcyon days as a winemaking chateau. Split across the ground and first floors, there are six king-size bedrooms with four en-suite bathrooms and one large family bathroom with an inviting freestanding tub.

Despite the feeling of privacy and seclusion, the property is very accessible – just ten minutes from Saint-Émilion and well within an hour of Bordeaux and its airport. We'd suggest carving out some time for yourself to enjoy a distinctly French day out wine tasting at the countless vineyards within a short drive of the property, or booking a tee time at one of the nearby eighteen-hole golf courses.

When stocking up on essentials, there's practically a food market every day of the week, so you can steer clear of the supermachés and shop the way the locals do. And if all that poolside relaxing has drained you of any desire to cook, your hosts can help organise a private chef. Alternatively, there are plenty of top-notch restaurants within a short drive.


Dust on the Bottle

This home is ideal for groups of friends, with the house separated into three parts, offering everyone privacy as well as a chance to come together and enjoy communal meals and games. As soon as you arrive, you’ll be seduced by the imposing exterior, set against the lush greenery of the garden. With a glistening pool, sun loungers and plenty of alfresco dining spots, there’s no doubt you’ll pass entire days without ever feeling the need to venture beyond the walls of the garden. 

Come inside and you’ll find yourself embraced by the warm and welcoming ambience, with stone walls, wooden ceiling beams and original fireplaces. There’s a huge country kitchen here, perfect for rustling up delectable French classics, and the guest cottage boats an additional kitchen. The whole party will enjoy nights of restful sleep and sweet dreams in the plush bedrooms, spread across the three buildings – in the mornings, welcome each new day with freshly brewed coffee on the terrace. 

Outside your country gem, you’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to gorgeous places to discover – from the local village of Gensac to the famous Saint Emilion, and of course, you may want to take a day trip to Bordeaux and Arcachon. 

Poet's Reverie 

Few things sounds more romantic than a cottage situated in the middle of wine country, where the endless vineyards sprawl and birds chirp. Perfect for a long-awaited holiday away from the kids or a getaway for a budding romance, the home is small but its surroundings are vast and baby-blue French shutters are ever-so charming. Escape right out to the private gardens from the pastel bedroom. After days lounging by the pool or drifting in the nearby river, take the bikes to one of two nearby towns to explore gothic churches and to pick up local delicacies like fresh truffles and a bottle (or two) of wine for enjoyment on the stone terrace. Intimacy is the emphasis here, and we can guarantee this home as a perfect start to a French-inspired love story. 

Gardenia

When your mind wanders to sunnier climes, daydreaming about an escape to France, this is the kind of place you’ll find yourself imagining. This stunning villa has it all – a picturesque stone facade, rolling countryside views, and every comfort and luxury you could hope for. 

It’s in the heart of the Perigord countryside, with plenty to discover along the Dordogne. A day trip to the famous medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is a must, with its gorgeous architecture and incredible food markets. Rent bikes from your host and explore the rich and verdant countryside surrounding the villa, taking picnics of local cheese and fresh bread to enjoy along the way. 

Of course, you may find that you’re entirely content to stay put most of the time – there’s enough to enjoy at the villa, after all. Wake up early and enjoy a quiet moment in the garden, sipping your coffee as the early-morning sun warms you. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and pastries, lie in the sun beside the pool, occasionally dipping a toe in to test the temperature. Swim beneath a cloudless blue sky, and play with the little ones on the lawn. This is an idyllic home, where rest and relaxation are the focus.

Stone Amid Hills

Doze in the sunshine and let the scent of peonies, magnolias and roses drift over you on a gentle breeze. This idyllic Dordogne home is a haven, set in a valley of rolling countryside. When you’re not stretched out on a sun lounger, you’ll be swimming laps in the solar-heated salt-water pool, and listening to the fountain trickle softly in the background. Tuck into alfresco feasts on the terrace – there’s a barbecue and pizza oven to make cooking as easy as can be. When the sun has set, settle around the fire pit with a bottle of local wine, and sit out late spotting constellations in the clear sky above. 

The house itself is wonderful. The contemporary living space is the heart of the home, with high ceilings and plenty of light. There’s enough room for everyone to gather together here, though there are also peaceful corners for those quieter moments – we love the reading nook. 

In addition to its wonderful charm and beauty, this home is in an excellent location. Hop on bikes to cycle into the village for a coffee and a bite to eat in a cafe-bar, or to shop locally. The Friday morning market in nearby Ribérac is one of the best in the area – head there to pick up local produce for dinner. Aubeterre-sur-Donne, one of France’s prettiest villages, is just a short drive away. There’s so much to see and do here, you’ll want to return time and again. 


Peony Blushes

The minute you arrive at Bucolic Beauty, you’ll feel right at home thanks to its beautiful and personal touches. During cooler months, the cosy sitting room is great for hunkering by the fire, while the outdoor terraced dining area and swimming pool make alfresco living a breeze during summer days. Little ones will particularly enjoy the large games barn that comes complete with table tennis and plenty of space to roam around. A lovely home like this requires excellent service to match: your very own housekeeper will be on hand to cater to your every need and give you an opportunity to practice your French!

Bucolic Beauty

If a slice of the scenic Dordogne countryside were to express itself as a home, this would be it. Be it the pool surrounded by wildflowers and trees, the decadent sauna and hot-tub or evening Tête-à-têtes by the fireside as you sink into plush sofas, every space erases any trace of stress in you. While it's tempting to stay back in this very secure home playing table tennis all day, it'd be a shame to miss the relaxing activities nearby. Vitrac is a perfect town for cycling, horse-riding, golf and idling by riverside beaches. And if it's fishing that tugs at the heartstrings, the home-owner is a fisherman himself and will love to guide you through. By the Bougainvillea

Tucked away in the lush countryside of the Dordogne, in a hamlet between the medieval towns of Monpazier and Beaumont du Périgord, sits this beautiful home. The renovated farmhouse and cottage date back to the 16th century, and have been restored with so much love and care. The character of the buildings has been cherished – they’ve just been brought into the 21st century so you’ll have everything you might need during your stay. 

You can look forward to original beams, terracotta tiles, and a centuries-old larder and stone basin. An enormous fireplace with a wood burner keeps things oh so cosy – there’s no finer place to curl up with a glass of wine on chilly evenings. 

This charming home sits in 2.5 acres of gardens, with the scent of lavender and rosemary carrying in the breeze. The beautiful stone exterior of the farmhouse is decorated with clambering wisteria, roses and jasmine. It’s like something from a children’s story – a real idyll. There are peaceful corners where you can sit and enjoy a moment of tranquillity, revelling in the views. 

In the morning, stroll through the gardens and pick fruit from the trees. Sit in the sunshine for a breakfast of fresh nectarines, cherries and figs. The heated salt-water swimming pool has been positioned to benefit from the most glorious views, so we’d be spending much of our time there. When you’ve dozed in the sunshine and are ready for more action, you might take to the pétanque court, or perhaps you’ll play boules, badminton, football, or table tennis. You can even practice archery – there’s no chance of getting bored here. 

The jewel in the glittering crown of this home is the summer kitchen. Originally a barn, the outdoor kitchen now boasts a barbecue and a shaded space for you to host get-togethers. Languid lunches turn into evenings spent under the stars in this pretty and atmospheric space. You’ll never want to leave.
