Rent bikes from your host and explore the rich and verdant countryside surrounding the villa, taking picnics of local cheese and fresh bread to enjoy along the way. 

Of course, you may find that you’re entirely content to stay put most of the time – there’s enough to enjoy at the villa, after all. Wake up early and enjoy a quiet moment in the garden, sipping your coffee as the early-morning sun warms you. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and pastries, lie in the sun beside the pool, occasionally dipping a toe in to test the temperature. Where do you even begin at an estate like this? Set in the rolling Dordogne countryside, just a few minutes by car from Saint-Julien-de-Lampon and the superb Dordogne River, it's a staggering prospect with two large homes, two swimming pools and two annexes. Sleeping up to twenty-two guests and with a picture-perfect chapel available for events, it's a once-in-a-lifetime setting for a very special celebration or a gathering of friends and family.

Around twenty-five minutes from the medieval city of Sarlat, this ancient hamlet has been lovingly maintained, creating both a comfortable, lived-in feel and an air of grandeur. With numerous seating areas, dining tables and indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, your group can live the high life all together. 

One of our favourite spots has to be the living room in the four-bedroom home, with its exposed stone walls, beamed ceiling and huge fireplace – as well as panoramic views across the green valley. Plenty of character can be found upstairs, too, with dramatic vaulted ceilings and pretty bedrooms. Meanwhile, the larger of the two main homes has been converted more recently and has a more modern feel – and sits within a private walled garden.

It's perfectly possible to choose just one of the main homes if you're travelling as a smaller group, and there's an almost endless list of luxury add-ons if you're keen to take the work out of your stay – from private chefs and waitress service to daily breakfast and cleaning. And don't miss the chance to arrange boat hire on the nearby river for a day out to really remember.

A delightfully restored rectory in the Dordogne valley, this charming home provides peace and quiet for a family or group of friends wanting to slow down and switch off. Surrounded by manicured lawns that are perfect for picnics, you’ll spend mornings on the wraparound terrace listening to the birds sing in the fresh countryside air. We loved the rustic interiors; exposed stone walls, terracotta-tiled floors and timber beams infuse an organic warmth throughout. Steal a moment for yourself in the cosy living space before retreating to the main bedroom for an afternoon snooze beneath double-height ceilings. If exploring is on the agenda, jump in the car and visit the nearby towns and villages – we were particularly fond of Gourdon, a twenty-minute drive away, as well as the craggy limestone plateaus of Causses du Quercy Natural Regional Park, reached in no more than thirty minutes.

Inside, original timber beams and stone walls have been lovingly restored to create a warm and inviting ambience. We loved the convivial living space with its squashy sofa and fully-equipped kitchen – ideal for those who like to flex their culinary muscles. When you’re not playing board games at the dining table, you’ll be out on the terrace, sipping a café au lait and watching the day pass by. 

Spend afternoons playing badminton before cooling off with a swim in the private pool. Later on, take the bicycles out for a spin through the surrounding countryside or why not jump in the car and explore the quaint medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda – it’s only a thirty-minute drive away.

Doze in the sunshine and let the scent of peonies, magnolias and roses drift over you on a gentle breeze. This idyllic Dordogne home is a haven, set in a valley of rolling countryside. When you’re not stretched out on a sun lounger, you’ll be swimming laps in the solar-heated salt-water pool, and listening to the fountain trickle softly in the background. Tuck into alfresco feasts on the terrace – there’s a barbecue and pizza oven to make cooking as easy as can be. When the sun has set, settle around the fire pit with a bottle of local wine, and sit out late spotting constellations in the clear sky above. 

The house itself is wonderful. The contemporary living space is the heart of the home, with high ceilings and plenty of light. There’s enough room for everyone to gather together here, though there are also peaceful corners for those quieter moments – we love the reading nook. 

In addition to its wonderful charm and beauty, this home is in an excellent location. Hop on bikes to cycle into the village for a coffee and a bite to eat in a cafe-bar, or to shop locally. The Friday morning market in nearby Ribérac is one of the best in the area – head there to pick up local produce for dinner. Aubeterre-sur-Donne, one of France’s prettiest villages, is just a short drive away. There’s so much to see and do here, you’ll want to return time and again.

This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

If a slice of the scenic Dordogne countryside were to express itself as a home, this would be it. Be it the pool surrounded by wildflowers and trees, the decadent sauna and hot-tub or evening Tête-à-têtes by the fireside as you sink into plush sofas, every space erases any trace of stress in you. While it's tempting to stay back in this very secure home playing table tennis all day, it'd be a shame to miss the relaxing activities nearby. Vitrac is a perfect town for cycling, horse-riding, golf and idling by riverside beaches. And if it's fishing that tugs at the heartstrings, the home-owner is a fisherman himself and will love to guide you through. With medieval towns, archaeological parks, markets and culinary delights all around, it goes a long way to live in this gorgeous home.

Nestled on the edge of the Causses National Park, this family-friendly villa in the Midi-Pyrenees offers a great base for families looking to explore nearby Dordogne, Cele and Lot river valleys. Active seekers will love going hiking, caving, horseback riding and paddling. You can tell a lot of thought has gone into making this home kid friendly - the billiards room, toys and games are bound to keep little ones entertained for hours on end. But there’s plenty to keep adults happy, too. We’re particular fans of the charming wine cellar and the two rustic dining rooms that combine to make entertaining in this home a pleasure.

This fully restored castle in the Dordogne manages to merge the modern with the ancient. The stone foundations may date back as early as the 5th-century, but the interior is dotted with modern art and all the little luxuries of modern life. There's over 15 hectares of land to explore, with a swimming pool, terraces, and a barbecue area for al fresco dining. The castle backs on to the vineyards of Bergerac, so you're never too far from a glass of locally produced wine. Should the weather turn, the games room with a billiards table and library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves provide quality indoor entertainment.

A honey-coloured stone house in a dreamy riverside location in the Dordogne… Do French getaways get any better than this?

This beautiful house has been a family home for four generations, and you can feel the love that’s been poured into it. The decor is simple and bright so as not to take away attention from the traditional features like exposed stone walls. Wide windows look out onto the river, which is flanked by lush greenery and flowers. 

Wake to the bells of the small church opposite, and take breakfast on the terrace. There’s a romantic feel to this part of the world, particularly in the early morning when the haze still clings to the river. Sip your coffee and breathe in the tranquillity of the region. 

The house is only a six-minute drive from Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. The Panoramic Gardens have the most stunning views – after you’ve drunk in the vista, head to a bistro or cafe nearby. You might also like to paddle along the river, pulling into river beaches to soak up the sunshine – we like to set off from Le Buisson, which is eight minutes away by car. You’re in a great location for day trips of all kinds, whether you want to meander along the narrow medieval streets of Sarlat – forty-three minutes away – or sip local wine at Château de Monbazillac, which takes forty-four minutes in the car. 

Make sure to call in at the local food markets to sample the best produce in the area. After a day out seeing the sights, why not settle in for a family barbecue on the terrace? Splash around in the pool while the barbecue is heating up, and spend your evening under the stars.

Simply mentioning Malbec from the ancient family-run vineyards of Cahors can soften the pickiest wine connoisseur. Premier Cru sits by its own such vineyard and has produced some award-winning Malbec over the years. Hosted by a jewellery mogul, the gorgeous refurbished cottage is an architectural gem by itself but that's just the starting point. Cycle by the Lot river to ancient UNESCO world heritage sites and summer music festivals, or swing by the artisan bakeries and Sunday markets. Beauty is everywhere you turn.

Charmingly rustic and idyllically rural, this 14th-century mansion is ideal for a family looking for a slightly different countryside escape. History lives on within this property, which harks back to simpler times. Besides the bathroom and second kitchen, the interior has not been modernised. It contains original stone walls, exposed beams and antique furnishings. Dine on plushly lined chairs beneath a dramatic chandelier and explore the characterfully-left old-fashioned kitchen cut from stone. This home, with its secret corners and stairways, will delight curious children who want to explore. Once they’ve found every unique treasure (including an antique sewing machine), they can head out into the verdant countryside. The garden is extensive and even houses a swimming pool overlooking a wildflower meadow. As this château is close to a working dairy farm, you can even spot cattle grazing in the pastures.

Driving up to this 18th-century chateau in the Bergerac region of France might invoke a sense of actually travelling back in time. And if driving in through wrought-iron gates and past decorative moats doesn’t do it, the interior of this beautiful home just might. Between exposed beams, historical fireplaces, rough-stone walls, chandeliers, and a spiral staircase made of stone, you might get lost in the idea that you’re actually living like royalty. Which is exactly the type of attitude we encourage – take it a step further by having high tea out on the terrace, curling up on the period furniture with a classic novel after you’ve kindled a fire, or walking around the 30-hectare estate of woods and meadow in search of the perfect spot for tea and macarons. 

With plenty of space on offer, everyone is sure to find a nook that serves them just right and you might find yours in one of the palatial bedrooms or in a secluded spot in the garden where you can sit down at the bistro table with a glass of wine. 

Come together in and around the pool where you can dangle your feet into the crystal clear water or make use of one of the sunloungers. With seclusion comes peace and tranquillity and this home makes enjoying that environment to the fullest, easy – offering you every opportunity to spend lazy, sun-filled days in whichever way would make you the happiest. If that means exploring, then you can venture to beautifully restored towns such as Sarlat, Bergerac or Périgueux, and if it means golfing, you’d be happy to find a course minutes away. 

Purple Périgord Chateau

Perhaps unsurprisingly for a chateau that dates back to the 16th century, there's a real air of grandeur at this address. Perhaps the best example of this can be seen in the dining room, which has parquet flooring, wood-panelled walls and a truly monumental 17th-century fireplace. The Beupoil family wallpaper in the living room wouldn't be of place in a museum, while the mosaic-tiled bathrooms are fit for a Roman Emporer, too.

The home's forty acres of private grounds are just as impressive as the lavish interior. Not only are there wonderful views of the Isle River Valley and the woods of Antoniac, but there's also a private swimming pool from which you can admire this rustic vista. Add to that an outdoor games area with tables for ping-pong and pool, plus a barbecue, and you've got everything you need for a stretch of alfresco living.

In the local area, the edge of Parc Naturel Régional Périgord-Limousin takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car and offers no shortage of beautiful French countryside to wander through. The town of Perigueux is a five-minute drive away too and rewards visitors with a collection of fantastic restaurants, plus a twice-weekly outdoor market.


Yesteryear

Surrounded by fields where the only sound is the threshing of wheat and coo of pigeons, this chateau sits out in the Lot-et-Garonne countryside. The first thing we noticed was the old pigeonnier rising up like a stone turret which domestic pigeons would have fluttered in and out of in times gone by. A quiet courtyard area is shadowed by this architectural curiosity where you can dine in the sunshine, or on the shaded veranda – the choice is yours. Within the sprawling green gardens, there are towering trees that have stood for centuries and a stone path winds down the lawn to the swimming pool. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon the petanque court for a game in the sun. 

Within the home, the main lounge has a pleasingly rustic feel to it with gnarled old wooden beams on show, exposed stone walls and a lofty wooden ceiling with skylights out to the deep blue sky. A big wood-burning stove sits pride of place – harking back to a bucolic time of hand-tilled land and horses in stables. The kitchen is ultra-modern with a dedicated wine fridge to chill your bubbly, and French doors in here show off a view of rolling fields. Plus, there’s a huge pantry for all the produce you can pick up from the small-town farmers’ markets in the area. But the piece de resistance has to be the private wine cellar with its thick stone walls, barrel tables and a host ready to organise private tasting sessions of the best local vintages. 

Should you fancy a day trip, hop over the border to the Dordogne for an endless selection of wineries and the charming town of Bergerac is around a forty-five-minute drive away. 

Enchanted Pigeonnier

In the heart of the Limousin-Perigord National Park, this home exudes all the rustic charm of an old farmhouse. The building dates back to the 17th century, evident in its honey-brown stone facade and white-wash shutters. The lush garden is home to towering, ancient trees, offering plenty of privacy, especially if you want to spend day lounging by the poolside in the sun. There’s a hammock for a quiet siesta and dining beneath the wrought-iron gazebo. From here, the only soundtrack to your holiday is the cheep of blue and great tits. Pathways lead across the seven acres of grounds to hidden benches and shaded spots between the trees – you may even spot the resident green woodpecker nesting in the sweet chestnut tree. 

Inside, it’s a picture of lavish yet rustic charm, with a wood-burning stove in the master bedroom for chilly evenings, original fireplaces and a big farmhouse-style table at the centre of the kitchen. This home has been lovingly restored, with the old features like wood beams and terracotta floors still on display. In the grand living room, you’ll find an antique dresser stacked with books and a fireplace for cosy evenings in. While the kitchen is vast and boasts a pretty stove in the old hearth. 

You could spend all your days spotting wildlife and lounging by the pool. But if you do fancy a day trip, Limoges is a forty-five-minute drive and the pretty medieval town of Périgueux is a fifty-minute drive in the other direction.
