Better known for its Atlantic rollers and camping sites, this stretch of the French coast is all about laid-back summer living. On the outskirts of Bidart, this home epitomises that with its clean lines and minimalist style. Using white walls, yellow sofas, and geometric light fittings, the apartment feels modern and new. Chill out on one of the Eames rocking chairs, soak up some rays on the deckchairs or watch what's cooking in the kitchen from the breakfast bar. A small balcony looks out over hills and other homes and is our favourite spot for assessing the conditions for the day's adventures. If surfing is on the cards, it's less than a 10-minute drive to Bidart beach, while Biarritz and its glamorous facade is just 15. Not in the mood for that much activity? We suggest padding down to the communal pool for lengths, before heading back to the terrace for a glass of something icy.

However, it isn't all style over substance, and this home has plenty of useful amenities including a dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, and iron. You'll certainly want to explore Mimizan during your stay – head into town to enjoy a seafood lunch and wander the seafront promenade next to the dunes. We love the mix of old and new in this charming country house on the outskirts of Mimizan. Glass panels sit above beamed ceilings, skylights have been added to the slanted roof, and French doors flood the open living space with sunshine. Bedrooms are strikingly modern, the attic room paying homage to the ocean with a monochrome beach print and knotted lamp stands, while the master's sliding doors open up to a large en-suite with a huge rainfall shower. On cooler days, the feature fireplace is the perfect place to warm up – though bright sunflower prints give the impression of an endless summer. The outdoor pool and sun loungers are on hand for those hot, balmy days and the large gardens hide several seating spots, including a patio with outdoor kitchen and barbecue for whipping up something delicious.

Acres of tree-filled grounds surround this home, where you’ll find a private swimming pool for lazy days on loungers and a tennis court with an automatic ball machine if you want to practice your serve. There’s plenty of room for the group to dine outside, admiring the pretty facade of this historic abode.

Inside, choose between three lavish lounges for evenings with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Midi-Pyrenees. The 19th-century stylings of grand fireplaces, an upright piano and velvet chaise longues pair perfectly with a full-bodied red. Gathering at the formal dining table, you can feel how French nobility lived in days gone by. We love the kitchen which is a riot of colour yet retains a farmhouse feel with its big, range cooker and cast-iron kettles and pots. Or, head further afield and take a day trip to Biarritz on the coast – it’s an easy drive away. Within the immediate area, Peyrehorade is the closest town (13km away) where you can stock up on supplies or just take a stroll along the river.

Perched above a gorgeous stretch of coast, this Hossegor retreat combines stunning views with close proximity to the beach and the city centre. In this surfer's paradise, their tastes are well-catered for – you're far more likely to grab something healthy than anything with chips in the nearby eateries. We think the home is better suited to a family or firm friends, given any nighttime trips to the bathroom involve using the only bedroom's ensuite. And with free parking available, you're not only confined to the local beaches – drive to the forest at Landes, or the nearby city of Bordeaux. 

Huxley's Hideaway

Deep in the heart of South-West France’s woodlands, down winding country lanes brimming with hedgerow life and the scents of the organic farmlands, this authentic 17th-century manor house brings you to halt and draw breath. Brimming with original flavour, natural timber and that certain “je ne sais quoi” that rural French manor living emanates, it doesn't really get better than this. The wisteria-covered arbour makes us sigh, it’s just so picture-pretty, the original “pigeonnier” – we could wax lyrical. Instead, we can picture you there, en famille.
