Built in the 17th century, the spacious house retains charming original details – from the exposed wooden beams to the curved sash windows. But your host has updated it with striking sculptures and graphic wall art, as well as comfortable furniture so you can kick back and relax after a day of exploring.

This enormous chateau in the Burgundy countryside has quite a fascinating backstory. It was built in 1900 and gifted to a French actress by her lover before it was sold to the Red Cross and used as a war hospital. Today, it's the spot for a rather sumptuous getaway.

The interior is full of grand features, from the long dining table in the orangery and high-ceilinged living room to the library and impressive hallway. You might also notice some more recent additions, such as the home cinema set-up and spa-worthy bathrooms.

Outside, too, has some rather inviting features, chief among them the heated swimming pool surrounded by loungers. When you're finished taking a dip, there's plenty more to discover in the four acres of grounds, including a fishing pond and a shared tennis and basketball court.

However you choose to fill your days, the chateau's rural location will ensure you can do it in the utmost tranquillity. There are lots of walking routes that start nearby and Morvan National Park lies under half an hour's drive away. The town of Epinac only takes ten minutes in the car to reach and offers a restaurant, bakery, grocery and butchers.

When your toes feel frosty and your muscles are sore, head back home to a roaring fire and some delicious cheese fondue around the oak dining table before snuggling up for a family movie night in the lounge.

In each of these local towns, there are shops and restaurants to pick all you need. The drive to reach the chalet may not be the easiest, and snow tyres and chains, as well as a 4x4 vehicle, are a must, but it’s worth the effort. Surrounded by nature, this is somewhere you can truly switch off – and, step inside, and you’re met with a contemporary yet homely space. When you’re ready to hit the slopes, experienced skiers can ski straight from the chalet via a blue slope – otherwise, it’s a mere 1.5 kilometres to the lifts at Le Plan.

You don’t have to look far to find proof of the enviable position – simply wander out onto the balcony and you’ll spot the rolling green mountain there as confirmation. But it isn’t just about the views either, not when the ski slopes of Les Evettes are a mere 1.8 miles away and can be reached via the free shuttles that run in season. Get on the snow and test your mettle on the different ski runs, before coming back for a warming Après-ski drink on the balcony.
