This romantic farmhouse is the French getaway of your dreams, located in the staggeringly beautiful Dordogne valley. Surrounded by lavender and rosemary-filled gardens, and the undulating countryside beyond, you can sink into a state of deep relaxation from the moment you arrive. 

The 16th-century home was renovated in 2016 by interior designer Joris van Grinsven, who respected the charming original features while modernising it for 20th-century travellers. Expect thick stone walls, terracotta floors and wood-beamed ceilings alongside a high-spec kitchen, luxurious seating and a flat-screen TV. Sounds like the best of both worlds to us. 

From the windows in the plush upstairs bedrooms, keep an eye out for deer, birds of prey and wild boars roaming the landscape. You'll likely want to spend most of your time in the peaceful outdoor space, which has a private heated pool, pétanque court and plentiful loungers where you can sit and sip cocktails with the sun overhead.

Start each day with a refreshing dip in your outdoor pool while you watch the sun come up over the yellow fields. Apart from tasty cuisine, this region also offers some excellent and famous wines, which you can sample in nearby Bergerac or Monbazillac. The latter also has a beautiful chateau, which is well worth a visit.

The renovated farmhouse and cottage date back to the 16th century, and have been restored with so much love and care. The character of the buildings has been cherished – they’ve just been brought into the 21st century so you’ll have everything you might need during your stay. 

You can look forward to original beams, terracotta tiles, and a centuries-old larder and stone basin. An enormous fireplace with a wood burner keeps things oh so cosy – there’s no finer place to curl up with a glass of wine on chilly evenings. 

This charming home sits in 2.5 acres of gardens, with the scent of lavender and rosemary carrying in the breeze. The beautiful stone exterior of the farmhouse is decorated with clambering wisteria, roses and jasmine. It’s like something from a children’s story – a real idyll. There are peaceful corners where you can sit and enjoy a moment of tranquillity, revelling in the views. 

In the morning, stroll through the gardens and pick fruit from the trees. Sit in the sunshine for a breakfast of fresh nectarines, cherries and figs. The heated salt-water swimming pool has been positioned to benefit from the most glorious views, so we’d be spending much of our time there. When you’ve dozed in the sunshine and are ready for more action, you might take to the pétanque court, or perhaps you’ll play boules, badminton, football, or table tennis. You can even practice archery – there’s no chance of getting bored here. 

The jewel in the glittering crown of this home is the summer kitchen. Originally a barn, the outdoor kitchen now boasts a barbecue and a shaded space for you to host get-togethers. Languid lunches turn into evenings spent under the stars in this pretty and atmospheric space. You’ll never want to leave.

Nestled away deep within vineyard country between the Garonne and Dordogne, Monségur is a quintessential bastide town full of medieval architecture and this impressive home is a suitably characterful place to stay if you're planning a visit.

It's a more recent addition to the locale than many of the nearby buildings, but there are still a few centuries of heritage in the walls and this sense of history has been expertly retained during a recent renovation, which prioritised traditional methods and materials. Take a wander throughout the ground floor and you'll spot antique furnishings, period features and elegant decorations evocative of years gone by. At the same time, guests are also treated to all of the amenities to be expected in the 21st century – we're talking sleek kitchens and bathrooms, plus plenty of tech and gizmos.

We've been saving the best until last, however. Out in the enclosed garden, it's pretty clear to see where long summer afternoons will be spent – flitting between the cooling waters of the swimming pool and the surrounding loungers. Of course, if the weather's on your side during your stay, there are plenty of wineries, abbeys and walking routes to explore in the surrounding Entre-Deux-Mers region, as well. The city of Bordeaux only takes an hour to reach by car, too.

Journey through the vineyards of Bordeaux before finding yourself at this stone villa on the bank of the Dordogne. The highlight of this stay for us is not only the view of the romantic river, but the direct access to it via a private dock or one of the included kayaks. If you do happen to tire of a lazy day by the river (or pool if you’d rather), explore the private gardens, scenic as a Monet painting, and pick at seasonal treats for your family or friends to snack on. Speaking of food, you can take the bikes out to the nearby boulangerie for croissants and tarts. We should also mention that the local farm’s goats cheese selection is sensational, especially when paired with wines from the neighbouring vineyards. 

River Days

A honey-coloured stone house in a dreamy riverside location in the Dordogne… Do French getaways get any better than this?

This beautiful house has been a family home for four generations, and you can feel the love that’s been poured into it. The decor is simple and bright so as not to take away attention from the traditional features like exposed stone walls. Wide windows look out onto the river, which is flanked by lush greenery and flowers. 

Wake to the bells of the small church opposite, and take breakfast on the terrace. There’s a romantic feel to this part of the world, particularly in the early morning when the haze still clings to the river. Sip your coffee and breathe in the tranquillity of the region. 

The house is only a six-minute drive from Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. The Panoramic Gardens have the most stunning views – after you’ve drunk in the vista, head to a bistro or cafe nearby. You might also like to paddle along the river, pulling into river beaches to soak up the sunshine – we like to set off from Le Buisson, which is eight minutes away by car. You’re in a great location for day trips of all kinds, whether you want to meander along the narrow medieval streets of Sarlat – forty-three minutes away – or sip local wine at Château de Monbazillac, which takes forty-four minutes in the car. 

Make sure to call in at the local food markets to sample the best produce in the area. After a day out seeing the sights, why not settle in for a family barbecue on the terrace? Splash around in the pool while the barbecue is heating up, and spend your evening under the stars.

When you’re not stretched out on a sun lounger, you’ll be swimming laps in the solar-heated salt-water pool, and listening to the fountain trickle softly in the background. Tuck into alfresco feasts on the terrace – there’s a barbecue and pizza oven to make cooking as easy as can be. When the sun has set, settle around the fire pit with a bottle of local wine, and sit out late spotting constellations in the clear sky above. 

The house itself is wonderful. The contemporary living space is the heart of the home, with high ceilings and plenty of light. There’s enough room for everyone to gather together here, though there are also peaceful corners for those quieter moments – we love the reading nook. 

In addition to its wonderful charm and beauty, this home is in an excellent location. Hop on bikes to cycle into the village for a coffee and a bite to eat in a cafe-bar, or to shop locally. The Friday morning market in nearby Ribérac is one of the best in the area – head there to pick up local produce for dinner. Aubeterre-sur-Donne, one of France’s prettiest villages, is just a short drive away. There’s so much to see and do here, you’ll want to return time and again.

As featured on Channel 4’s ‘Escape to the Chateau', this 12th-century castle once saw involvement in the Hundred Years' War, but now offers a storybook retreat. You'll be touching centuries of history as you brush past stone walls and walk spiral staircases. Imagine rolling out of a four-poster bed and admiring the valley views from a former lookout, then curling up in the lounge to learn some French phrases.

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. Where do you even begin at an estate like this? Set in the rolling Dordogne countryside, just a few minutes by car from Saint-Julien-de-Lampon and the superb Dordogne River, it's a staggering prospect with two large homes, two swimming pools and two annexes. Sleeping up to twenty-two guests and with a picture-perfect chapel available for events, it's a once-in-a-lifetime setting for a very special celebration or a gathering of friends and family.

Around twenty-five minutes from the medieval city of Sarlat, this ancient hamlet has been lovingly maintained, creating both a comfortable, lived-in feel and an air of grandeur. With numerous seating areas, dining tables and indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, your group can live the high life all together. 

One of our favourite spots has to be the living room in the four-bedroom home, with its exposed stone walls, beamed ceiling and huge fireplace – as well as panoramic views across the green valley. Plenty of character can be found upstairs, too, with dramatic vaulted ceilings and pretty bedrooms. Meanwhile, the larger of the two main homes has been converted more recently and has a more modern feel – and sits within a private walled garden.

It's perfectly possible to choose just one of the main homes if you're travelling as a smaller group, and there's an almost endless list of luxury add-ons if you're keen to take the work out of your stay – from private chefs and waitress service to daily breakfast and cleaning. And don't miss the chance to arrange boat hire on the nearby river for a day out to really remember.
