Originally built as an old farmhouse, this beautiful home combines rustic charm with a light colour palette to create a space that feels both cosy and light, and certainly inviting enough for you to relax in. 

We can imagine lazy starts followed by freshly-brewed coffee at the dining table, right next to the statement fireplace. Unfortunately not in working order anymore, the design of the old hearth is still a beautiful focal point to the dining space. Scramble eggs in the minimal kitchen to enjoy alongside fresh croissants, cheese, and caffeine before getting ready for a day of exploration. 

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. Enjoy sunset drinks on the terrace, barbecued dinners, and collapse onto the lawn every now and again for late-night stargazing.

Nestled away deep within vineyard country between the Garonne and Dordogne, Monségur is a quintessential bastide town full of medieval architecture and this impressive home is a suitably characterful place to stay if you're planning a visit.

It's a more recent addition to the locale than many of the nearby buildings, but there are still a few centuries of heritage in the walls and this sense of history has been expertly retained during a recent renovation, which prioritised traditional methods and materials. Take a wander throughout the ground floor and you'll spot antique furnishings, period features and elegant decorations evocative of years gone by. At the same time, guests are also treated to all of the amenities to be expected in the 21st century – we're talking sleek kitchens and bathrooms, plus plenty of tech and gizmos.

We've been saving the best until last, however. Out in the enclosed garden, it's pretty clear to see where long summer afternoons will be spent – flitting between the cooling waters of the swimming pool and the surrounding loungers. Of course, if the weather's on your side during your stay, there are plenty of wineries, abbeys and walking routes to explore in the surrounding Entre-Deux-Mers region, as well. The city of Bordeaux only takes an hour to reach by car, too.

Named a ‘Best Romantic Break’ by Liz Earle Wellbeing, this chateau in the stunning setting on the Dordogne-Lot et Garonne border presents a unique experience worth writing home about. 

Amidst the spanning countryside of rolling hills, summer sunflowers and fruit trees, it is rumoured that in former times, the fruit was picked from the gardens and served to the aristocracy residing at the 13th-century château just opposite. These days, the abundance of fauna and flora remains for guests' enjoyment. Roam around the castle's grounds, and as you soak up the views, take in the fresh air – sweetly fragranced by the orchards. 

While the home is listed as an ancient monument, it is restored to a pristine standard with contemporary finishings throughout. With plenty of living areas to relax, it's not just the six beautifully furnished en-suite bedrooms that will have you feeling refreshed and revitalised, as you'll find many quiet spots inside and out, to sit in peace with a glass of Côtes de Duras wine. We particularly love that when evening falls, you can control the coloured lighting of this 13th-century castle in a very 21st-century manner. 

Beyond the chateau and its beautiful garden (featuring a terrace and pool area), stroll along the little path that leads straight to the village of Duras in minutes. Pick up fresh bread and pastries from the boulangerie alongside some fresh fare at the local farmers' market. Then, when you're ready to venture further afield, set off on day trips to discover the likes of Bergerac, Château de Monbazillac and Saint-Émilion – all of which boast medieval architecture, quality restaurants and exquisite Maison des Vins.

A beautifully historical home, this artist's mansion in the cathedral town of Condom (yes, that's the real name of its village!) invites guests to experience authentic French charm from the heart of Gascony. Revealing a picturesque Italian-style garden setting with sculptures, a fountain, and a private swimming pool, out here, you'll find the perfect spot for a morning coffee or evening aperitif (Armagnac is the drink of the region). 

Despite the home's sense of history, there is also a feeling of space and minimalism, allowing you to relax in refined and rustic surroundings. The creative touches owe credit to the owner (an artist), who adds personal details such as Murano glass light fittings and original sculptures. Period furnishings pay homage to the maison's beautiful original features and bring a sense of grandeur to the minimal styling. 

Whether you rustle up your own feasts in the kitchen's wood fire or have a private chef come and do the honours – sharing delicious group meals here is an absolute must here. Our favourite dining spot of the home is the candle-lit 19th-century Orangerie. Oh and there's even an on-site wine cellar. 

Explore the Gers countryside, discovering idyllic villages such as Montréal, Fourcès and Larressingle – just a short drive away. In the warmer months, we recommend hiring a little motorboat and gliding along the river. The more athletic type might prefer kayaking or canoeing – and if you have food on the brain, take a stroll into the local village to check out the atmospheric weekly farmer's market and cosy restaurants.

Gourmet Castle  is a little atypical, but in the best possible way. It's a little castle, which combines the beat features of larger chateaus with the intimacy of a holiday villa. With charming turrets and a huge garden that you can explore to your heart's content, this home is a great countryside escape for those looking for a beautiful backdrop to their adventures. Come in, drop your bags, and look around the regal bedrooms. Lounge on the king bed here for a moment, appreciating the space and light that fills this room. You’ll also be amazed at the beautiful outdoor pool and pool house – both provide the perfect backdrop for summertime family fun. You’re sure to make many happy memories at this home, which boasts plenty of room for every guest to stretch out and relax.

Start each day with a refreshing dip in your outdoor pool while you watch the sun come up over the yellow fields. Enjoy lounging in the shaded area that offers views of the water, while you sip on a coffee and plan out the rest of your day. Cook up a French breakfast of boudin noir and scrambled eggs, and eat together around the majestic dining table. Head into the pool house to play ping pong, and pour some cocktails in the summer kitchen. 

If you want to venture out, Castillonnes is a short drive away, where you'll find a lively market, as well as lovely restaurants and sights to see. You’ll find this wisteria-clad château on the banks of the River Lot, set within forty acres of woodland and landscaped gardens. The place boasts period furnishings, as well as a few modern luxuries – there’s a heated swimming pool, a cinema room, and a gym. When it comes to sleeping arrangements, the home is split into six separate suites – handy for families travelling together. After exploring the private grounds, why not go further afield? Nip across to the village of Penne-d'Agenais or hike over to the small fortified town of Pujols.

Riverbank Retreat

Situated in the southern Dordogne countryside, this villa, comprising a main house and a separate cottage, is ​​perfect for multigenerational family reunions and large friendly get-togethers. There’s plenty to keep the group entertained here, from a games room complete with a home cinema and bar to 15 acres of rolling meadows with a swimming pool and a boules court. Cook up a storm with seasonal produce picked from the vegetable garden, or why not sample the restaurants in Bergerac? A twenty-minute drive away.

A Song of Light

Surrounded by fields where the only sound is the threshing of wheat and coo of pigeons, this chateau sits out in the Lot-et-Garonne countryside. The first thing we noticed was the old pigeonnier rising up like a stone turret which domestic pigeons would have fluttered in and out of in times gone by. A quiet courtyard area is shadowed by this architectural curiosity where you can dine in the sunshine, or on the shaded veranda – the choice is yours. Within the sprawling green gardens, there are towering trees that have stood for centuries and a stone path winds down the lawn to the swimming pool. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon the petanque court for a game in the sun. 

Within the home, the main lounge has a pleasingly rustic feel to it with gnarled old wooden beams on show, exposed stone walls and a lofty wooden ceiling with skylights out to the deep blue sky. A big wood-burning stove sits pride of place – harking back to a bucolic time of hand-tilled land and horses in stables. The kitchen is ultra-modern with a dedicated wine fridge to chill your bubbly, and French doors in here show off a view of rolling fields. Plus, there’s a huge pantry for all the produce you can pick up from the small-town farmers’ markets in the area. But the piece de resistance has to be the private wine cellar with its thick stone walls, barrel tables and a host ready to organise private tasting sessions of the best local vintages. 

Should you fancy a day trip, hop over the border to the Dordogne for an endless selection of wineries and the charming town of Bergerac is around a forty-five-minute drive away.

In a picturesque rural setting, set on thirty acres of flower-filled grounds shared with just one other maison, this romantic home beckons. While away the days in your private pool with the southern French sun on your skin, or chill out indoors surrounded by charming original features.

The renovated farmhouse and cottage date back to the 16th century, and have been restored with so much love and care. The character of the buildings has been cherished – they’ve just been brought into the 21st century so you’ll have everything you might need during your stay. 

You can look forward to original beams, terracotta tiles, and a centuries-old larder and stone basin. An enormous fireplace with a wood burner keeps things oh so cosy – there’s no finer place to curl up with a glass of wine on chilly evenings. 

This charming home sits in 2.5 acres of gardens, with the scent of lavender and rosemary carrying in the breeze. The beautiful stone exterior of the farmhouse is decorated with clambering wisteria, roses and jasmine. It’s like something from a children’s story – a real idyll. There are peaceful corners where you can sit and enjoy a moment of tranquillity, revelling in the views. 

In the morning, stroll through the gardens and pick fruit from the trees. Sit in the sunshine for a breakfast of fresh nectarines, cherries and figs. The heated salt-water swimming pool has been positioned to benefit from the most glorious views, so we’d be spending much of our time there. When you’ve dozed in the sunshine and are ready for more action, you might take to the pétanque court, or perhaps you’ll play boules, badminton, football, or table tennis. You can even practice archery – there’s no chance of getting bored here. 

The jewel in the glittering crown of this home is the summer kitchen. Originally a barn, the outdoor kitchen now boasts a barbecue and a shaded space for you to host get-togethers. Languid lunches turn into evenings spent under the stars in this pretty and atmospheric space. You’ll never want to leave.

We highly recommend a visit to the town of Moissac to soak in the atmosphere of lively weekend markets, and wonder at the breathtaking splendour of the Saint-Pierre Abbey and an extension of the Canal du Midi.

One of the best things about Pilgrims & Wine is the way it balances its old-timey charm with modern luxuries, which results in a villa that looks a lit like an ancient Roman holiday home — and we love it. Think raw stone, doors that open outwards onto terraces, a huge pool with its own little shelter, and plenty of nooks for reading and working on your tan. Since there's quite a lot of space, we recommend this one for longer stays where the balance between autonomy and socialising is as important as the fact that you'll be staying far from city noise. When you're not walking around the vast gardens and admiring the far-reaching views, walk (or drive) down to the nearby Lauzerte. Frequently named one of France's ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, it's full of delightful restaurants, shops, and cafes. Make sure your return to your holiday residence with some locally produced wine and sit back on the terrace just in time to admire the sunset.

If you’re always in the kitchen at parties, don’t worry – at Artichoke & Tomato, everyone else will be too. The large, informal table seats 14, and forms the centre of the fully equipped kitchen with pantry. If it gets too hot, grab a glass of Merlot and spill out into the adjoining courtyard or take a dip in the pool. While the adults gossip, little ones can take advantage of the tennis court, table tennis, table football and boules. If you need a top-up, the famous wine-producing region of Bordeaux is just over one hours’ drive away – just remember not to drink and drive!

Just a glance at this Château and it’s not hard to see why Harper's Bazaar Italia awarded it the title of number one large villa in Europe. Reputedly a gift from Napoleon to one of his generals, every detail of this 19th Century home is an ode to the magic of French living. From the elegant rooms and luxurious details to the heated swimming pool and outdoor dining areas, this is the perfect setting for a rejuvenating retreat. There are five acres of serene grounds to explore and your host is on hand to help organise a range of extras – including private chefs and massage treatments. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to the town of Beaumont de Lomagne and a little further on to Toulouse.

The house may feel a little dated, yet charming and provides a great place for spending quality time with your loved ones. The living area opens onto the large garden, which boasts an outdoor pool and a terrace to enjoy local delicacies on. Apart from tasty cuisine, this region also offers some excellent and famous wines, which you can sample in nearby Bergerac or Monbazillac. The latter also has a beautiful chateau, which is well worth a visit.

Amour-Aime

Deep in the heart of South-West France’s woodlands, down winding country lanes brimming with hedgerow life and the scents of the organic farmlands, this authentic 17th-century manor house brings you to halt and draw breath. Brimming with original flavour, natural timber and that certain “je ne sais quoi” that rural French manor living emanates, it doesn't really get better than this. The wisteria-covered arbour makes us sigh, it’s just so picture-pretty, the original “pigeonnier” – we could wax lyrical. Instead, we can picture you there, en famille.
