When you're feeling peckish, Cancale oysters are a must-try. Head to one of the local restaurants or buy some from the Mont Saint-Michel oyster market and take them home to prepare yourself. We highly recommend an alfresco dinner on the terrace, washed down with a glass of French wine. When you're finished, head up to the terrace to watch the sunset – the waterfront views have to be seen to be believed.

The upper floor has two bedrooms with sloping ceilings and rooflight, one with a French bed (160 cm) and another with two beds. There is also an open gallery on this floor. Guests can enjoy the outdoor space on the terrace which comes equipped with terrace furniture, portable barbecue and deck chairs. One pet/dog is allowed per stay.

You may be pulling up the drive by car rather than horse-drawn carriage, but the magic remains the same; perhaps literally, as there’s a tree on the property that’s rumoured to be enchanted. Regardless of any magic trees, this château will quickly cast its spell over you; antique furniture and all the mod cons sit amongst beautifully restored interior furniture, while the sprawling grounds are home to ancient stone crosses, sun-dappled woodland, and even a tennis court. The home’s guardian is on hand to whip up some gourmet meals, there are complimentary bikes to take a tour of the surrounding area and even a library hidden away in the tower. When can we move in?

You'll find this characterful farmhouse in sweet Cancale, where fresh oysters are on the menu and Mont Saint-Michel stands proud in the middle of the bay. It's a charming little village, and you'll be well-placed to soak up its authentic Breton atmosphere. Follow the path by the house and you'll end up at Port Briac beach, while the restaurants perched along the quay in town are an excellent spot to relax with a glass of wine and breathe in the salt-tinged air. 

As undeniable as the location is, what makes this home a standout are the stunning traditional features in every room. We're smitten with the exposed stone walls and knotted wooden beams, and many cosy nooks invite you to kick back and unwind away from the group. Mealtimes are a grand affair in the dining room, with its sky-high ceilings and ornamental hearth. Tuck into a home-cooked feast made with locally-sourced seafood and produce, followed by a glass or two of Brittany's famous cider in the conservatory. During the summer, head out to the garden for sundowners and barbecues, then snuggle up for a good night's sleep in the comfortable bedrooms.

Even though this large home sits in the middle of a golf course in rural Brittany, there's plenty to keep guests occupied even if they're not keen followers of the sport.

Take the wonderful wellness space, for example. Surrounded by large windows that look out to the peaceful grounds, there's both a heated swimming pool and a Jacuzzi to recline in once you've done a length or two. If that sounds a little too sedate, there's a huge range of games, from foosball and ping-pong to a petanque court and an arcade machine on which you'll find over 1500 video games. We're not saying you'll be praying for rainy days, but they won't be the catastrophe they might be at other addresses.

At the same time, the huge garden offers lots of space and equipment for enjoying spells of sunny weather. You can embrace a French tradition on the petanque court, bounce about on the trampoline or do nothing more strenuous than read on the terrace – perhaps with dinner cooking away on the barbecue in the background.

We should also mention that the home – once a farmhouse in a former life – is a pleasing mix of rustic and contemporary aspects, with wooden ceiling beams and a few patches of exposed stonework sitting quite happily alongside stark white walls, bold artwork and a super-sleek minimalist kitchen.

When it comes to seeing a little more of this corner of France, there's a good selection of spots that are a short drive away. The seaside towns of Saint-Malo and Dinard are a quarter of an hour away by car for instance, while both Rennes and Mont Saint Michel take around forty minutes to reach.

A Playful Character

Amidst Calvados orchards and stunning rural landscapes rests this 18th-century chateau in the heart of the Normandy countryside. Dripping in elegance, the castle retains its enchanting heritage dating back to the 1700s, while modern renovations bring added comfort and practicality. 

Experience Normandy's unrivalled calmness as you wander around the chateau's 13 acres of lawns, ancient trees and rose gardens. During the springtime, watch the flowers blossom, while in summer, you can take delight in picking plums, apples and cherries from the orchard. Upstairs the bedroom and bathroom suites are dressed in minimal designs and invite guests to truly switch off. The window-side built-in bathtub is like something from a fairytale and deserves to be enjoyed with a glass of champagne in hand. Or why not make that a Calvados cocktail? 

You'll be within easy reach of the Normandy cider routes from here, so soak up the slow pace of life found in the charming local villages, which are most often home to atmospheric markets boasting fine quality fresh fare. Within short driving distance, the likes of Bayeux, Caen and the D-Day Landing beaches are well worth a visit if you're keen to explore Normandy's cultural and historical sights amongst its captivating natural beauty.

In an old house right on the seafront, this little home is the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries in Brittany. Just half an hour from Saint-Malo, the loft apartment has character features like sloping ceilings, heavy oak beams and partially exposed stone walls, but at the same time it's been modernised with a bright white paint job, herringbone wood floors and skylights. Surprisingly open and bright, we particularly love the living space with its sea view window. The kitchen is perfectly well-equipped for cooking light meals at home but it's only a five-minute walk to the town centre with its bakeries, restaurants and bars (it's known for its oysters, by the way). Keen walkers will be able to explore the local hiking trails and there are all sorts of water sports on offer nearby too.

This home is part of local history here in Villerville, but its history isn't the only reason we love it. Recently refurbished to preserve its charm and whimsical nature, this home is a great place to visit if you need a bit of inspiration. As you'll be staying right on the beach, La Peinture will give you plenty of sea breeze and views to start your day, so get up early, grab a coffee, and sit on the terrace to catch the sunrise. Once you're ready to explore, take a walk on the beach and if the weather is nice, dip your toes into the sea. You can pack light if you're here to swim and work on your tan as you can always return to your gorgeous residence for a snack. If you want to do a bit of sightseeing, visit the nearby towns of Honfleur and Deauville and walk the cobbled streets. when you return, whip up a meal in the well-equipped kitchen to replenish your energy, then organise a movie night with the help of the big flat-screen TV. 

La Peinture

This home in Saint-Jean-du-Bois caught our eye after it was recommended by a member of the Plum Guide community. An elegant country chateau, it's perfectly plonked in the heart of the Loire Valley, with Le Mans just a twenty-minute drive away. Here you'll feel like nobility the moment you pull up in the drive. Sat in an eye-wateringly huge 450-acre estate, this place has impressive features by the boatload. Speaking of boats, you can fish or row round the lake, or hop on one of the bikes provided to peruse the countryside, challenge someone to a game of tennis, or dive into the beautiful heated pool. Inside, the home is a super-stylish mix of stripped-back country chic and lux modern design. Each of the nine bedrooms is decorated to a theme, and there are roll-top baths to be found in some of the luxury bathrooms. This is one to savour with family, friends and a few glasses of local wine.

The highlight, though, for us, is the private garden area around the apartment – you have a terrace and garden furniture for alfresco meals – it's a great space overlooking the Grande Plage, as well as the Pointe de la Garde.

Spend idyllic days on the Grande Plage on your doorstep or indulge in some water sports such as surfing, paddleboarding or take some catamaran lessons.
