This lovely little villa lies on a small medieval hamlet, surrounded by Mediterranean gardens. We think it's ideal for a romantic getaway – children aren't permitted here, so you can take advantage of the peace and quiet. With your own Jacuzzi on the terrace and a private pool heated between April and October, it's well-equipped for alfresco living. We highly recommend hiring a car here to make the most of this gorgeous location, whether it's a day trip to Sommières or the bustling Montpellier.

If you’re looking for a countryside retreat with a difference, then this converted windmill could be the one. Perched on Lot-et-Garonne’s highest point, you’ll be treated to views of vineyards and rolling hills from the windmill and its private terrace. This place is strictly for adults only, so is perfect for a romantic getaway or wellness escape, although the layout here won’t suit everyone – the home is set over five storeys, with steep, narrow stairs between the floors. With walking trails on the doorstep and wineries nearby, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. And if you fancy a day trip, the riverside town of Eymet is an eighteen-minute drive away, and Medieval Bergerac can be reached in thirty-two minutes.

This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

With its secluded, heated pool, this elegant apartment housed in a 16th-century building in Uzès is the perfect French retreat. This charming restored home is full of character, from the remarkable circular stone staircase and wooden ceiling beams to the old stone floors. We love the gracious living room with its views over the fig and bamboo trees, the pool and the town's rooftops. There's a wood-burning stove, too, for cosy nights when the weather turns chilly and a desk for catching up on work as well. 

This place is ideal for a couple or family with two children. The icing on the cake here is the incredible hospitality from your lovely hosts. They can arrange all sorts of activities for you to do, including walking tours and cookery classes. 

When you're ready to explore the area, take a stroll around the town and admire the wonderful architecture or head to its renowned weekly market, then take a seat at one of its traditional restaurants. Further afield, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pont du Gard, under a twenty-minute drive away, or discover historic Nîmes, around thirty minutes in the car.

The estate consists of a magnificent 19th-century château, an adjoining 16th-century farm, two separate cottages, and a magnificent 12th-century chapel, making it a historical treat.

Spend your days gazing out the balcony at the 360-degree views of stunning countryside and the Pyrénées beyond, and even get a cup of coffee to get your day started perfectly. This home has an abundance of options for keeping you entertained throughout your stay, from racing down the zip line for an adrenaline rush to boating along the little lake for a relaxing day drifting along, lured by your favourite book. Back at the house, enlist the assistance of a private chef to enjoy alfresco meals as glasses are raised and jokes abound.

It is absolutely tranquil to be placed in six hectares of private gardens, yet you get the best of all worlds since numerous places are only a short drive away. Nestled away deep within vineyard country between the Garonne and Dordogne, Monségur is a quintessential bastide town full of medieval architecture and this impressive home is a suitably characterful place to stay if you're planning a visit.

It's a more recent addition to the locale than many of the nearby buildings, but there are still a few centuries of heritage in the walls and this sense of history has been expertly retained during a recent renovation, which prioritised traditional methods and materials. Take a wander throughout the ground floor and you'll spot antique furnishings, period features and elegant decorations evocative of years gone by. At the same time, guests are also treated to all of the amenities to be expected in the 21st century – we're talking sleek kitchens and bathrooms, plus plenty of tech and gizmos.

We've been saving the best until last, however. Out in the enclosed garden, it's pretty clear to see where long summer afternoons will be spent – flitting between the cooling waters of the swimming pool and the surrounding loungers. Of course, if the weather's on your side during your stay, there are plenty of wineries, abbeys and walking routes to explore in the surrounding Entre-Deux-Mers region, as well. The city of Bordeaux only takes an hour to reach by car, too.

A short drive from the city of Montpellier, this villa offers fantastic views and plenty to do. We think it's a great choice for families and friend groups – it's bursting with amenities, including all-terrain bikes, a pétanque court, a heated infinity pool, and a gym and sauna. The dedicated office has a double sofa bed for two guests, and there are two EV chargers here for added convenience. We do recommend hiring a car here to make the most of your stay, whether it's exploring Montpellier or the village of Montferrier-sur-Lez, or spending a day at the beach.

This rustic-chic apartment, located in the centre of Avignon, packs in the Provençal charm by the bucketload. The floors are made up of vintage tiles and original wooden boards, both aged like fine wine. Look up, and you'll note the stunning exposed timber frame of the building. All this character and period charm is sparked into life by the occasional modern touch, with elegant mid-century-inspired furniture, bright pops of colour and a minimalist, modern kitchen. This colourful pad in central Montpellier manages a seemingly impossible task – it's right in the thick of the action, yet, tucked away at the back of a residential building with a private terrace, it boasts peace and quiet that's difficult to find in a city.

We expect you'll spend most of your time in the cheerful outdoor space, decked out with a sun lounger, dining table and sofas to encourage true relaxation. Nip out to one of the nearby patisseries each morning, pick up some fresh croissants and take them back home to enjoy in the sunshine. Come evening, switch the coffee for a bottle of sauvignon and continue luxuriating in this restful spot. 

When you're not making the most of your stylish home, step out your front door and discover Montpellier's must-see sights. Place de la Comédie is less than ten minutes away, while the lively neighbourhood of Saint Roch is even closer. This stunning southern French stone home is the epitome of rustic chic. The perfect pied-à-terre for an adventurous couple or family with small children, this traditional two-bedroom house is charming, characterful and bursting with pops of colour. Featuring a lovely, light-filled open-plan living space – think terracotta tiled floors, exposed stone walls and a large wood-burning fireplace – this home wears its heritage proudly on its sleeve. You’ll love taking your morning coffee at the breakfast bar and gathering around the table at meal times before treating yourself to a long hot soak in the bath or lighting the fire and chilling out on the sofa for movie night. 

Your home’s idyllic location in Vogüé, undeniably one of the most beautiful medieval villages in France, means you’re within metres of both the Château, and the Ardèche river. Walk from Saint Cerice Chapel, a Roman church built into the rock and overlooking the village, along a footbath to the Château before heading down to the riverside beach to sunbathe and swim. Alternatively, hire canoes or get on your bike and set off on the Via Ardèche, a straight 25 km cycle path from Vogüé to Grospierres. Whatever you do, don’t forget to indulge in some local food and wine and live life as it were a beautiful dream.

Best of all, there’s a private roof terrace that offers sweeping panoramic views of Provence.

Within walking distance of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence's town centre, you'll discover restaurants, museums, and the region's grand market on your doorstep. Idyllic in every sense, the south-facing garden is perfect for sunbathing on the poolside terrace – although our favourite spot is the orangery, with its summer kitchen and light-filled living space. We love that multiple seating areas are spread across the main house, outdoor patio and a separate annexe, which is great for groups seeking to split off in their downtime.
