This charming home was once a favourite pub for weary fishermen at the end of their shift, right on the pebbles of Kingsdown Beach. If you fancy a real ale or cold pint after a day on the beach, don’t worry, the current local pub is just two doors down. If you want a bit more choice, head to the seafood restaurants and swanky bars of Deal, an hour’s walk along the seaside promenade, or an eight-minute drive.

The home itself is packed with little treats and surprises. There’s the beachside garden out the back, where you can pad barefoot from the outdoor dining terrace straight onto the shingle of Kingsdown Beach for a paddle in the sea. Then there’s the secret sauna, tucked down an old alleyway. The pretty little sunroom is furnished with floral armchairs and a vintage-style radio to listen to the Shipping Forecast while gazing out to sea. We love the kitchen and living room, which is packed with vintage pieces and has the air of an old fisherman’s cottage. Poking about through the extensive vinyl collection and browsing the cookbooks is a particular delight.

But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. It’s rare that a house in Whitstable has a garden this big, but that’s the bonus of being on the outskirts of town. True to any seaside sanctuary, there are deck chairs in the garden to soak up the sun and outdoor dining set up on rattan furniture. A big lawn allows kids to run free. 

Inside, the social space is huge. A mezzanine balcony and double-height ceiling in the open-plan living area created a sense of space and we love the boho and scandi-chic seating for all the family. A breakfast bar and kitchen island of raw wood mean there’s oodles of prep space and dining is at a rustic wooden table with bench-style seating. Bedrooms are massive, and kids will love the higglety pigglety layout of single beds secreted away beneath eaves and on mezzanine levels.

You’re on the outskirts of Whitstable, a twenty-minute walk (or five-minute drive) from the seafront where beach huts line the sand and fishing boats bob in the harbour. Here you’ll find plenty to see and do with fish and chip restaurants and ice cream shops galore. Outdoorsy types should hit the Crab and Winkle Cycle Way, right from the home’s doorstep.

Beachfront living is hard to beat, and that's exactly what this fuss-free apartment offers. Set on Sandgate Esplanade, the shingled beach is just across the street. It's on the top three floors of a Victorian building dating back 150 years, so expect to climb quite a few stairs. You'll find it's worth the effort, though, as the views from up here are superb. The bay window offers sweeping sea panoramas, including a glimpse of France in the distance. It's not the most modern home – the communal hallway is especially dated – but it works well for families keen to be seconds from the sea.

Positioned directly on Dungeness's public beach, this former foghorn testing station has been fully renovated into a unique getaway for two. The nearby lighthouse's foghorn still works, although we much prefer the idea of waking up to the sound of the waves and seagulls. The sea is literally on your doorstep, and huge glass doors and a small terrace maximise the idyllic views. It's more of a studio than a one-bed, but we like the single-level layout. Although phone signal is patchy here and there's no proper TV, there is wi-fi for remote working and streaming. That said, the Bose speaker system, wood burner and teak bathtub are all you need to truly unwind.

This a home that really makes you feel like you're on an English seaside holiday. It rests just a few steps from the pretty Deal seafront and the golden pebbles of the beach – you can even smell the fresh scent of the air from your home. 

It's only natural that uplifting aroma inspires you for a day by the shore. Grab your towels, bring some refreshments and enjoy an afternoon of sunbathing and swimming. If you fancy a break from the sun, you can always nip back home in under a minute.
