Found in the French commune of Arraute-Charritte, this typical basque house is bursting with understated charm and an inviting atmosphere that’s hard to ignore. Step foot inside and you’ll find yourself longing for easy mornings and long, contented afternoons. Start with coffee in bed as you stay under the plush covers for a while longer to finish one more chapter of the novel you’re reading. When a hungry tummy can no longer be ignored, pad downstairs to put together a breakfast of croissants and scrambled eggs – although it can be enjoyed at the dining table, you may as well elevate every meal by dining alfresco in the garden. 

Days at home can be spent between the living room, where you can stretch out on the couch to get some more reading down, the kitchen, where you can regularly top up your coffee, and the outdoors, where the fresh country air will invigorate the senses. Sit out on the terrace for cheese and wine, or have lunch picnic-style on the lawn. 

If you’re looking to explore, Biarritz is around a fifty-minute drive away and it’s known for long sandy beaches. Return home after a day of sun and surf to put your feet up, and don’t forget to make use of that sprawling lawn for a bit of late-night stargazing.

Better known for its Atlantic rollers and camping sites, this stretch of the French coast is all about laid-back summer living. On the outskirts of Bidart, this home epitomises that with its clean lines and minimalist style. Using white walls, yellow sofas, and geometric light fittings, the apartment feels modern and new. If surfing is on the cards, it's less than a 10-minute drive to Bidart beach, while Biarritz and its glamorous facade is just 15. Not in the mood for that much activity? We suggest padding down to the communal pool for lengths, before heading back to the terrace for a glass of something icy.

With a truly enviable location on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques overlooking the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean, this 1930s-style villa was made for lazy summer afternoons.

There are a plethora of spots to sit and soak up the sunshine, whether that's surveying the surroundings from the balcony, tucking into dinner on the terrace or reading in the peaceful gardens. If this all sounds a little too inactive, you're more than welcome to notch up a couple of lengths in the swimming pool or hone your forehand on the tennis court.

The interior feels bright and cooling thanks to the white walls, tiled flooring and French doors. An extensive collection of colourful artwork is sure to catch the eye, although it must be said that sports fans will much prefer the foosball table.

When it comes to beaches, both Grand Plage and Plage d'Erromardie sit only twenty minutes' walk from the home, while the portside restaurants and market of St Jean de Luz take slightly longer. The resort town of Biarritz is just a half-hour drive away, too.

Acres of tree-filled grounds surround this home, where you’ll find a private swimming pool for lazy days on loungers and a tennis court with an automatic ball machine if you want to practice your serve. There’s plenty of room for the group to dine outside, admiring the pretty facade of this historic abode.

Inside, choose between three lavish lounges for evenings with a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon from the Midi-Pyrenees. The 19th-century stylings of grand fireplaces, an upright piano and velvet chaise longues pair perfectly with a full-bodied red. Gathering at the formal dining table, you can feel how French nobility lived in days gone by. We love the kitchen which is a riot of colour yet retains a farmhouse feel with its big, range cooker and cast-iron kettles and pots. The pantry is a fabulous bonus, packed with cookbooks for inspired French meals and all the equipment you need for a picnic in the sprawling grounds.

Or, head further afield and take a day trip to Biarritz on the coast – it’s an easy drive away. Within the immediate area, Peyrehorade is the closest town (13km away) where you can stock up on supplies or just take a stroll along the river.

Between the maritime pines and golden beaches of Les Landes, this modern one-storey home is the perfect pad for a small group of friends or a family of four. Wide glass doors slide open to fill the stylish living space with pine-scented air, and a smart matte-black kitchen is fully equipped to make self-catering a breeze. You'll immediately notice the unfussy contemporary style, including statement lighting and spots of bright colour. However, it isn't all style over substance, and this home has plenty of useful amenities including a dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, and iron. Enjoy breakfast at the bar in the kitchen, or head outside to make the most of the morning sun. You'll certainly want to explore Mimizan during your stay – head into town to enjoy a seafood lunch and wander the seafront promenade next to the dunes. As the sun sets, return to your home for a barbecue with family or friends before sinking into the sofa with a glass of wine.

We love the mix of old and new in this charming country house on the outskirts of Mimizan. Glass panels sit above beamed ceilings, skylights have been added to the slanted roof, and French doors flood the open living space with sunshine. Bedrooms are strikingly modern, the attic room paying homage to the ocean with a monochrome beach print and knotted lamp stands, while the master's sliding doors open up to a large en-suite with a huge rainfall shower. On cooler days, the feature fireplace is the perfect place to warm up – though bright sunflower prints give the impression of an endless summer. The outdoor pool and sun loungers are on hand for those hot, balmy days and the large gardens hide several seating spots, including a patio with outdoor kitchen and barbecue for whipping up something delicious.

This home in the south of France offers sun, sand, and so much more. It's located just a twelve-minute drive away from the coast, and has a fantastic range of amenities that will keep even the fussiest guests smiling. 

There's a relaxed ambiance throughout the house, thanks to the warm colour scheme and use of natural wood. You can relax on the huge sofa with a glass of wine, challenge your guests to a round of pool, or take a nap in one of the serene bedrooms. Tucked away in the French countryside, this charming renovated farmhouse provides the ideal retreat for families or groups of friends who want a picturesque escape. While away the hours drinking the finest wines in the open-plan living space with its authentic exposed beams and tiled floors, or head outside and watch the sunset on the vine-draped terrace. 

In the mornings, we recommend grabbing some freshly-baked baguettes from the nearby bakery. In the afternoons, the extensive gardens make a great area for play for young and older alike, and the swimming pool is perfect for a quick nap in the sun. Further afield, you’ll want to visit the beaches at Hossegor, a cosmopolitan surfing hub with chic boutiques and markets.
