Between the maritime pines and golden beaches of Les Landes, this modern one-storey home is the perfect pad for a small group of friends or a family of four. Wide glass doors slide open to fill the stylish living space with pine-scented air, and a smart matte-black kitchen is fully equipped to make self-catering a breeze. Days are spent surfing the Atlantic rollers and strolling along the golden sands of la Côte d’Argent, the longest stretch of sand in Europe. Head home to catch the early evening sun on the wraparound terrace, and light up the barbecue with fresh local produce from the market halls in town. For a change of scene, the bars, bistros and boutiques of Bordeaux are just over an hour’s drive away, or head south to explore the stunning Basque Country.

Better known for its Atlantic rollers and camping sites, this stretch of the French coast is all about laid-back summer living. On the outskirts of Bidart, this home epitomises that with its clean lines and minimalist style. Using white walls, yellow sofas, and geometric light fittings, the apartment feels modern and new. Chill out on one of the Eames rocking chairs, soak up some rays on the deckchairs or watch what's cooking in the kitchen from the breakfast bar. If surfing is on the cards, it's less than a 10-minute drive to Bidart beach, while Biarritz and its glamorous facade is just 15. Not in the mood for that much activity? We suggest padding down to the communal pool for lengths, before heading back to the terrace for a glass of something icy.

Found in the French commune of Arraute-Charritte, this typical basque house is bursting with understated charm and an inviting atmosphere that’s hard to ignore. Step foot inside and you’ll find yourself longing for easy mornings and long, contented afternoons. Start with coffee in bed as you stay under the plush covers for a while longer to finish one more chapter of the novel you’re reading. When a hungry tummy can no longer be ignored, pad downstairs to put together a breakfast of croissants and scrambled eggs – although it can be enjoyed at the dining table, you may as well elevate every meal by dining alfresco in the garden.

We would suggest hiring a car in order to make the most of this outstanding part of the Basque country, but if you choose not to, there is a lot going on at the home itself. Play a few rounds of table tennis, volleyball, boules, or grab any of the fourteen bikes available.

With a truly enviable location on the Pyrénées-Atlantiques overlooking the endless blue of the Atlantic Ocean, this 1930s-style villa was made for lazy summer afternoons.
