With an advantageous hillside position giving way to panoramic views of Palombaggia Bay, this home is all about tranquillity. You'll find a private swimming pool and alfresco dining table all positioned towards the scenery. Personally, we like the little observation nook. Two chairs create the perfect opportunity for a romantic sunset moment. Though the interior doesn't quite hold a candle to the surroundings, it's still comfortable. The traditional Provencal interior brings no shortage of space and comfort and the villa stands on 650 acres of land, giving way to olive groves and fruit trees as far as the eye can see. Eight bedrooms are within the main house, and a further three are situated in the separate cottage, known as the 'Bergerie', where you'll also find a separate kitchen - great for inter-generational groups or those wanting more privacy from the main house. The kids will love the private pool, and grown-ups can take advantage of the poolhouse seating whilst supervising. Location-wise, you can venture to the coast on a day trip or visit the medieval Carcassonne, only a fifteen-minute drive away.

Boasting stunning views over the picturesque wooded hillsides of the Massif des Maures, this stone farmhouse has lots of space inside and out. Two of the single beds are up on a mezzanine level and younger children may need supervision on some of the staircases. An alpine town, Annecy is flanked by snow-capped mountains and perhaps the most picturesque spot is the stone Palais in the centre of the Le Thiou River – the view of which is best enjoyed from the riverside restaurants and gelaterias, a five-minute walk from this apartment. Although it’s a studio, the apartment itself feels spacious and it has plenty of character courtesy of the exposed brick wall and hardwood floor. A wall of windows lets in plenty of sunshine during the day and a room divider separates the living and bedroom area from the dine-in kitchen. There’s even a stylish, Scandinavian-esque desk if you want to work remotely. If you want to get around the compact town of Annecy in a flash, your host provides complimentary bikes for sightseeing.

With its secluded, heated pool, this elegant apartment housed in a 16th-century building in Uzès is the perfect French retreat. This charming restored home is full of character, from the remarkable circular stone staircase and wooden ceiling beams to the old stone floors. There's a wood-burning stove, too, for cosy nights when the weather turns chilly and a desk for catching up on work as well. 

This place is ideal for a couple or family with two children. The icing on the cake here is the incredible hospitality from your lovely hosts. They can arrange all sorts of activities for you to do, including walking tours and cookery classes. 

When you're ready to explore the area, take a stroll around the town and admire the wonderful architecture or head to its renowned weekly market, then take a seat at one of its traditional restaurants. Further afield, visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Pont du Gard, under a twenty-minute drive away, or discover historic Nîmes, around thirty minutes in the car.

This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

We're not sure if BBC sent you here, but if you want a closer look at Mulberry House's kitchen, look no further than Rick Stein’s 'Secret France' featuring the smiley host making a delicious meal here — and were absolutely expect your to try to recreate it! This is a typical French hilltop chateau, but this doesn't mean it's ordinary. The casually welcoming atmosphere is a product of modern furniture and restored period features, the kitchen being the best example of this harmony. Still, we expect you to spend much more time around this home than in it. With the huge pool that's perfect for a morning splash and the futuristic loungers around it, a gorgeous dining spot under the pergola, and a breezy back garden, there are plenty of spots to socialise or reflect in peace. The host team that looks after this home is always available to help and organise those extra touches that will make your stay even more special. Think transport to football matches in Marseilles, babysitters, maid service, and more.
