Reputedly a gift from Napoleon to one of his generals, every detail of this 19th Century home is an ode to the magic of French living. There are five acres of serene grounds to explore and your host is on hand to help organise a range of extras – including private chefs and massage treatments. You will need a car to get around here, but it’s just a short drive to the town of Beaumont de Lomagne and a little further on to Toulouse.

This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

Anyone who thinks large homes lack personality clearly never visited Form Over Function. This immense castle may have nine bedrooms and a four-hectare estate, but it retains its 13th-century character (along with corresponding low doorways). Originally built by a Cathar Lord, it’s now owned by a sculptor whose work is scattered across the grounds. The 86-square-metre Knights’ Hall with library was made for banquets, so bring your best mead and tuck into a mediaeval meal you’ll never forget. There’s also a separate 4-bedroom cottage on the grounds, which can be hired for an additional fee.

Get away from the everyday with a breathtaking getaway to this stunning villa. Based in the South of France, just a short drive from the picturesque city of Toulouse, this recently renovated gîte was originally built back in 1880, and so has a beautiful blend of the old and new. Exposed beams and cobblestone walls are paired with modern Scandi-style furniture, to create a unique and charming home that you'll want to return to time and time again.

Begin each day with a swing in the hanging egg chairs while you sip on a cappucino. Then, as the sun gets higher and the temperature rises, cool off in your stunning outdoor pool, or enjoy a spot of sunbathing on one of the poolside loungers. Grill up some French meats on your barbecue and tuck in at your shaded outdoor dining set. In the evenings, sit out on your outdoor lounge area with a sundowner, or cosy up with the TV and a movie.

Being located in the French countryside, you'll have many country rambles right on your doorstep, or venture further out with a drive to nearby Toulouse to explore museums, shops and restaurants.

We can imagine lazy starts followed by freshly-brewed coffee at the dining table, right next to the statement fireplace. Unfortunately not in working order anymore, the design of the old hearth is still a beautiful focal point to the dining space. Scramble eggs in the minimal kitchen to enjoy alongside fresh croissants, cheese, and caffeine before getting ready for a day of exploration. 

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. Enjoy sunset drinks on the terrace, barbecued dinners, and collapse onto the lawn every now and again for late-night stargazing.

You’re sure to make many happy memories at this home, which boasts plenty of room for every guest to stretch out and relax.

Start each day with a refreshing dip in your outdoor pool while you watch the sun come up over the yellow fields. Enjoy lounging in the shaded area that offers views of the water, while you sip on a coffee and plan out the rest of your day. Cook up a French breakfast of boudin noir and scrambled eggs, and eat together around the majestic dining table. Head into the pool house to play ping pong, and pour some cocktails in the summer kitchen.

Lavande Royal is your very own château, dating back to the 17th century. Head outside to discover your private saltwater pool, relax in a hammock and stroll the extensive grounds. On warm evenings, make use of the outdoor summer kitchen area and eat al fresco on the terrace. Lavande Royale was once a hunting castle, visited by the King of France and is now listed as an important site of the ‘Patrimoine de France’ (Heritage of France) – upon setting eyes on your holiday home, you’ll understand why.

Come in, drop your bags, and look around the regal bedrooms. Lounge on the king bed here for a moment, appreciating the space and light that fills this room. Curl up with a good book in the salon, and whip up a glorious meal in the rustic kitchen, then decide whether you want to done outdoors or indoors in the antique dining room. The host team here is absolutely brilliant — aside from being available at any time of day, they're also happy to organise a variety of in-house activities for you. Think babysitting, private chefs, and a local caretaker who's more than happy to help you find things to do in the area

Gourmet Castle

Surrounded by fields where the only sound is the threshing of wheat and coo of pigeons, this chateau sits out in the Lot-et-Garonne countryside. The first thing we noticed was the old pigeonnier rising up like a stone turret which domestic pigeons would have fluttered in and out of in times gone by. A quiet courtyard area is shadowed by this architectural curiosity where you can dine in the sunshine, or on the shaded veranda – the choice is yours. Within the sprawling green gardens, there are towering trees that have stood for centuries and a stone path winds down the lawn to the swimming pool. Perhaps you’ll stumble upon the petanque court for a game in the sun. 

Within the home, the main lounge has a pleasingly rustic feel to it with gnarled old wooden beams on show, exposed stone walls and a lofty wooden ceiling with skylights out to the deep blue sky. A big wood-burning stove sits pride of place – harking back to a bucolic time of hand-tilled land and horses in stables. The kitchen is ultra-modern with a dedicated wine fridge to chill your bubbly, and French doors in here show off a view of rolling fields. Plus, there’s a huge pantry for all the produce you can pick up from the small-town farmers’ markets in the area. But the piece de resistance has to be the private wine cellar with its thick stone walls, barrel tables and a host ready to organise private tasting sessions of the best local vintages. 

Should you fancy a day trip, hop over the border to the Dordogne for an endless selection of wineries and the charming town of Bergerac is around a forty-five-minute drive away.

You’ll find this wisteria-clad château on the banks of the River Lot, set within forty acres of woodland and landscaped gardens. The place boasts period furnishings, as well as a few modern luxuries – there’s a heated swimming pool, a cinema room, and a gym. When it comes to sleeping arrangements, the home is split into six separate suites – handy for families travelling together. After exploring the private grounds, why not go further afield? A beautifully historical home, this artist's mansion in the cathedral town of Condom (yes, that's the real name of its village!) invites guests to experience authentic French charm from the heart of Gascony. Revealing a picturesque Italian-style garden setting with sculptures, a fountain, and a private swimming pool, out here, you'll find the perfect spot for a morning coffee or evening aperitif (Armagnac is the drink of the region). 

Despite the home's sense of history, there is also a feeling of space and minimalism, allowing you to relax in refined and rustic surroundings. The creative touches owe credit to the owner (an artist), who adds personal details such as Murano glass light fittings and original sculptures. Period furnishings pay homage to the maison's beautiful original features and bring a sense of grandeur to the minimal styling. 

Whether you rustle up your own feasts in the kitchen's wood fire or have a private chef come and do the honours – sharing delicious group meals here is an absolute must here. Our favourite dining spot of the home is the candle-lit 19th-century Orangerie. Oh and there's even an on-site wine cellar. 

Explore the Gers countryside, discovering idyllic villages such as Montréal, Fourcès and Larressingle – just a short drive away. In the warmer months, we recommend hiring a little motorboat and gliding along the river. The more athletic type might prefer kayaking or canoeing – and if you have food on the brain, take a stroll into the local village to check out the atmospheric weekly farmer's market and cosy restaurants.

One of the best things about Pilgrims & Wine is the way it balances its old-timey charm with modern luxuries, which results in a villa that looks a lit like an ancient Roman holiday home — and we love it. Think raw stone, doors that open outwards onto terraces, a huge pool with its own little shelter, and plenty of nooks for reading and working on your tan. Since there's quite a lot of space, we recommend this one for longer stays where the balance between autonomy and socialising is as important as the fact that you'll be staying far from city noise. When you're not walking around the vast gardens and admiring the far-reaching views, walk (or drive) down to the nearby Lauzerte. Frequently named one of France's ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, it's full of delightful restaurants, shops, and cafes. Make sure your return to your holiday residence with some locally produced wine and sit back on the terrace just in time to admire the sunset.

The traditional decor is magnificent, full of antiques and representative of a Directoire-style chateau. There's plenty of space to stretch your legs with eight hectares of land, and the private pool and summer kitchen lets you make the most of this stunning location. The owners live on the grounds, giving you privacy but ensuring you won't be fully isolated. Within driving distance, you'll find charming villages like Laplume and Moirax where you'll find eateries, markets, and scenic walks.

The Garonne

Straight out of a belle époque style painting is this large chateau not far from Toulouse and big enough for the entire extended family. With views of the neighbouring vineyards from the home’s balconies, you will feel truly immersed in the grape harvest at the right time of year. Eat breakfast on the veranda while the kids float in the pool and enjoy days walking in the heart of wine country. Cycle into to nearby Gaillac for fresh cheese to enjoy with wine on the terrace and various herbs collected from the garden. The wildlife you can spot on the property was a highlight for us. Keep your eyes peeled for roe deer in the morning and listen for nightingales to sing you to sleep.

This home caught our eye for its peaceful location, tucked away in the Lot countryside, yet only a five minute drive from the town of Floressas. Thanks to the property’s hillside position, you’ll be treated to vast views of the surrounding fields and woodlands. With an east-facing balcony for breakfast, a covered terrace for shade during the afternoon, and an alfresco dining table for evening meals, you can spend all day enjoying the outdoor space. And while the rustic decor inside may not be to everyone’s taste, it certainly gives the home plenty of character.
