This beautifully renovated sixteenth century farmhouse with sweeping grounds is perfectly suited to a large family or group. Children will love the play room and football goals in the garden, and a couple of the bedrooms are especially designed for kids. The heated salt-water swimming pool really makes this home stand out for us, as does the air-conditioned barn – available for an additional fee – complete with a range of fitness equipment and pool table. Be aware however, that four of the bedrooms and three of the bathrooms are in annexes separate from the main house.

Nestled on the edge of the Causses National Park, this family-friendly villa in the Midi-Pyrenees offers a great base for families looking to explore nearby Dordogne, Cele and Lot river valleys. Active seekers will love going hiking, caving, horseback riding and paddling. A day trip to the famous medieval town of Sarlat-la-Canéda is a must, with its gorgeous architecture and incredible food markets. Rent bikes from your host and explore the rich and verdant countryside surrounding the villa, taking picnics of local cheese and fresh bread to enjoy along the way. 

Of course, you may find that you’re entirely content to stay put most of the time – there’s enough to enjoy at the villa, after all. Wake up early and enjoy a quiet moment in the garden, sipping your coffee as the early-morning sun warms you. After a breakfast of fresh fruit and pastries, lie in the sun beside the pool, occasionally dipping a toe in to test the temperature. Swim beneath a cloudless blue sky, and play with the little ones on the lawn. This is an idyllic home, where rest and relaxation are the focus.

Originally built as an old farmhouse, this beautiful home combines rustic charm with a light colour palette to create a space that feels both cosy and light, and certainly inviting enough for you to relax in. 

We can imagine lazy starts followed by freshly-brewed coffee at the dining table, right next to the statement fireplace. Unfortunately not in working order anymore, the design of the old hearth is still a beautiful focal point to the dining space. Scramble eggs in the minimal kitchen to enjoy alongside fresh croissants, cheese, and caffeine before getting ready for a day of exploration. 

Venture to Cadran Solaire – only minutes away by car – where you can hike the trails and explore the native foliage. In Nérac, about fifteen minutes away, you’ll find the night market and open-air cinema, but it’s also a great place to grab a bite to eat during the day. 

On those days where you find your itinerary completely clear, you’ll delight in the peace on offer at this home. Open the curved doors of the living room and read on the sofa, or head outside where you can walk the grounds until you find the perfect spot for an impromptu picnic. Enjoy sunset drinks on the terrace, barbecued dinners, and collapse onto the lawn every now and again for late-night stargazing.

Enjoy lounging in the shaded area that offers views of the water, while you sip on a coffee and plan out the rest of your day. Cook up a French breakfast of boudin noir and scrambled eggs, and eat together around the majestic dining table. Head into the pool house to play ping pong, and pour some cocktails in the summer kitchen. 

If you want to venture out, Castillonnes is a short drive away, where you'll find a lively market, as well as lovely restaurants and sights to see. Or, just go on a walk around the gorgeous grounds – the sunflowers offer up some amazing photo opportunities. This fully restored castle in the Dordogne manages to merge the modern with the ancient. The stone foundations may date back as early as the 5th-century, but the interior is dotted with modern art and all the little luxuries of modern life. There's over 15 hectares of land to explore, with a swimming pool, terraces, and a barbecue area for al fresco dining. The castle backs on to the vineyards of Bergerac, so you're never too far from a glass of locally produced wine. Should the weather turn, the games room with a billiards table and library with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves provide quality indoor entertainment.

A honey-coloured stone house in a dreamy riverside location in the Dordogne… Do French getaways get any better than this?

This beautiful house has been a family home for four generations, and you can feel the love that’s been poured into it. The decor is simple and bright so as not to take away attention from the traditional features like exposed stone walls. Wide windows look out onto the river, which is flanked by lush greenery and flowers. 

Wake to the bells of the small church opposite, and take breakfast on the terrace. There’s a romantic feel to this part of the world, particularly in the early morning when the haze still clings to the river. Sip your coffee and breathe in the tranquillity of the region. 

The house is only a six-minute drive from Limeuil, where the Vézère meets the Dordogne. The Panoramic Gardens have the most stunning views – after you’ve drunk in the vista, head to a bistro or cafe nearby. You might also like to paddle along the river, pulling into river beaches to soak up the sunshine – we like to set off from Le Buisson, which is eight minutes away by car. You’re in a great location for day trips of all kinds, whether you want to meander along the narrow medieval streets of Sarlat – forty-three minutes away – or sip local wine at Château de Monbazillac, which takes forty-four minutes in the car. 

Make sure to call in at the local food markets to sample the best produce in the area. After a day out seeing the sights, why not settle in for a family barbecue on the terrace? Splash around in the pool while the barbecue is heating up, and spend your evening under the stars. 


River View Cottage

This fully renovated, seventeenth-century presbytery honours its history without compensating on comfort. Original features – oak beams, stone walls and a beautiful original stone fireplace – are coupled with touches of modern luxury – a heated saltwater swimming pool and en-suite bathrooms for every bedroom – which creates a feeling of homely grandeur. A highlight is an on-site church which has been fully converted into a multi-functional hosting space, complete with hi-tech sound system and capacity for 30 seated guests. You can even pick fruit from the trees and grapes from the vines for the meals you’ll prepare in the small summer kitchen. Children will love the trampoline and table tennis, while grown-ups will enjoy the 3-kilometre walk into the riverside village of Moncrabeau for the weekly market. 

Sunflower Bliss

One of the best things about Pilgrims & Wine is the way it balances its old-timey charm with modern luxuries, which results in a villa that looks a lit like an ancient Roman holiday home — and we love it. Think raw stone, doors that open outwards onto terraces, a huge pool with its own little shelter, and plenty of nooks for reading and working on your tan. Since there's quite a lot of space, we recommend this one for longer stays where the balance between autonomy and socialising is as important as the fact that you'll be staying far from city noise. When you're not walking around the vast gardens and admiring the far-reaching views, walk (or drive) down to the nearby Lauzerte. Frequently named one of France's ‘Plus Beaux Villages’, it's full of delightful restaurants, shops, and cafes. Make sure your return to your holiday residence with some locally produced wine and sit back on the terrace just in time to admire the sunset.

Where do you even begin at an estate like this? Set in the rolling Dordogne countryside, just a few minutes by car from Saint-Julien-de-Lampon and the superb Dordogne River, it's a staggering prospect with two large homes, two swimming pools and two annexes. Sleeping up to twenty-two guests and with a picture-perfect chapel available for events, it's a once-in-a-lifetime setting for a very special celebration or a gathering of friends and family.

Around twenty-five minutes from the medieval city of Sarlat, this ancient hamlet has been lovingly maintained, creating both a comfortable, lived-in feel and an air of grandeur. With numerous seating areas, dining tables and indoor and outdoor entertaining spaces, your group can live the high life all together. 

One of our favourite spots has to be the living room in the four-bedroom home, with its exposed stone walls, beamed ceiling and huge fireplace – as well as panoramic views across the green valley. Plenty of character can be found upstairs, too, with dramatic vaulted ceilings and pretty bedrooms. Meanwhile, the larger of the two main homes has been converted more recently and has a more modern feel – and sits within a private walled garden.

It's perfectly possible to choose just one of the main homes if you're travelling as a smaller group, and there's an almost endless list of luxury add-ons if you're keen to take the work out of your stay – from private chefs and waitress service to daily breakfast and cleaning. And don't miss the chance to arrange boat hire on the nearby river for a day out to really remember.

If you're after an authentic stay in a historic French castle, look no further –this home offers the ultimate luxury French chateau experience. With carved, painted and stencilled wooden ceilings, uniquely themed bedrooms and even an original medieval chandelier in the period dining room, the building feels rich in history and exquisite in taste. That's not to say that it's old fashioned; the wellness centre (which includes a gym and yoga deck), sound system in the grand library, and air conditioning in each bedroom adds a modern touch. There are 32 hectares of grounds to explore, which include ancient woodland, valleys and even the ruins of a 12th Century church. All this, and the nearest village is only fifteen minutes away on foot.

The friendly owner lives next door to this home and is an excellent chef, so sit back and relax as you dine on an al-fresco French feast with the region’s famous truffles and wine from the local vineyards.

Yes, this home in the middle of the Tarn countryside dates back to the 19th century and is surrounded by 32 hectares of idyllic meadows, but this isn't the rustic getaway you might assume from first impression. How could it be so when the list of amenities at guests' disposal is so impressive?

Given the rather enviable climate that this corner of South France enjoys, you probably won't be surprised to learn that many of these lie outside. The first one that's likely to grab your attention is the swimming pool, but wander around a bit more and you'll discover everything from a sauna and six-person Jacuzzi to a tennis court and bar in the poolhouse for afterwards.

The home itself still retains an air of grandeur – all high ceilings, parquet floors and chandeliers. There are plenty of large communal spaces in which to gather together, but a fair few more private spots to escape the group for a peaceful moment. Chief among them is the rather elegant freestanding tub in the master bathroom.

One thing you'll quickly appreciate here is just how tranquil the locale is, with even the nearest village sitting 6km away. The surrounding area is peppered with charming towns and scenic hillside walking routes, while Toulouse is only 55km away, too.
